Starlink Mini Satellite Internet Kit $447 (+ Monthly Service Plan) + Delivery ($0 to Metro/ C&C/ in-Store) @ Officeworks

200

Was looking at current pricing for the Starlink Standard Hardware for a customer and found the Mini was on Special at JB Hi Fi @ $449, and then a subsequent search I found Officeworks doing a Price Beat @ $447

Harvey Norman and Bunnings have also now dropped.

Edit (03/06/2025) - Starlink have dropped their price down to $449 with Free Delivery.

Requires Monthly Service Plan

  • $15/Month 10GB Roam Plan (only available in the account)
  • $80/Month 50GB Roam plan
  • $195/Month Unlimited Roam

All plans can be paused. All plans can be used in-motion. There is a pro rata arrangement depending on your billing cycle. You can also upgrade/downgrade at any time. So you could start with 50GB and when maxed out, upgrade to unlimited.

Speeds on a Mini are slower than the Standard Kit but you can still get 200Mbps ish download. Roaming Speeds with inmotion tests can be found here and here.

150sqm range of WiFi (depending on the area and other WiFi networks). The Mini has a built in Ethernet port if you want to add something additional. You can mesh with other Starlink Routers.

Some common FAQs in the past:

  • Yes, you can use it on a Boat. There are certain things that need to be considered. Info available here.
  • Can the Mini be used with the Standard $139 internet package at a fixed location? - Yes

    $195/Month

But there are cheaper options. All depends on your use case.

    • +1

good luck with other options when bush

      • +1

Other options as in different starlink subscription plans like the $80 one.

        • It'll be interesting to see how this compares. But Starlink are already way ahead.

Two things to consider before you invest

One: it may become very expensive to maintain: https://www.newscientist.com/article/2481905-the-sun-is-kill…

Two - failing to keep with with regulations: Elon Musk's Starlink issued warning by Australian communications watchdog

If it was $299 again Id definitely consider it….

    • Same here, maybe this will drop when the next gen mini is released.

      • There hasn't been any reports of a new mini… There has been about a potential new Gen 4 Dish + Router. Zero about a mini yet.

The $299 was a great price point. It would only be when Starlink do this directly, though; I wonder if they will do a mid-year EOFY kinda sale. They have in the past, the mini generally has been on special every 6 months.

        • +1

Yeah its more wishful thinking on my behalf.

  • Oh wow, I don't know they have $15/month. Do I need to cancel my current service to see that plan?
Currently in residential + 50GB roam

    • +1

Assuming that you have the Bundle, you would need to decouple your Residential plus Roaming first (via a Ticket) and then downgrade to the $15 Roaming. Starlink can do it for you when you submit the ticket. That's what I had to do when I wanted to go from 50GB to Unlimited on my Mini.

  • What's the ping for gaming - Let's say an Australian counter-strike server?

I remember it was maybe 20 years ago we moved somewhere with no internet access and had to get satellite broadband. The ping was like 700-1000ms!

    • We were seeing 20-30ms to most aus servers for the games we play, so I'd imagine CS would be similar. We have the older style dish, but I believe the newer ones perform the same.

      • We have the older style dish, but I believe the newer ones perform the same.

They do. Gen 3 you might get slighter faster speeds (more probably because of the router and even then, its only maybe 50Mbps), but the ping is equal across all hardware when not in motion.

Just tested via https://gameserverping.com/ and here are the results:

If you want others, let me know.

      A lot has changed in 20 years……..

      The ping was like 700-1000ms!

I would expect that on NBN Satellite even now.

      • Thank you. Technology has definitely come a long way. 154ms to OCE in CS2 is high - FPS games start to become hard. From Adelaide to I assume Sydney servers, I get ~20-30ms on NBN.

        • +1

The latency on the satelite connection is due to the signal travel to the orbit and back. The old satellites were on geostationary orbit. Way way higher than the Starlink satellites that fly on the Lower earth orbit. Hence why they have much lower latency. But because they are still "up there" the latency will never reach on land wired connections. So it is futile to expect that.

        • From Adelaide to I assume Sydney servers, I get ~20-30ms on NBN.

On a Fixed Line NBN Connection?

          • @geekcohen: Correct mate

            • @thecloudking: Not surprised. Fixed line connections are always going to be better. Also, some ISPs have slightly better routing for gaming etc. I think AussieBB is pretty good compared to someone like Telstra.

Also, Starlink has only 3 POPs around AU. So it is Your Starlink > Satelitte > Ground Station > POP, then out from there through whoever they route via and/or peer share via. Its been a while since I really looked into the routing of ISPs etc, but I have a feeling that there is a difference between different ISPs when it comes to gaming, so I would assume Starlink is the same.

Latency used to be really high for some Starlink users due to the lack of ground stations and POPs. When I first got Starlink all my traffic was routed via the Sydney POP (even though I am in VIC). Now there is a Melbourne POP.

  • How does the $15/Month 10GB Roam Plan (only available in the account) work? i cant find any information about it on starlink website.

Anyone here on fixed NBN wireless?

About to move house to this and hoping it's not sh1thouse because I'd have to get Starlink and pay the neo nazi tax.

    • +1

Fixed NBN services vary from area to area. Some have really good, and some are just sh*t. So you must be moving to a Metro Area that only has FW.

My parents are in 3818 (Bunyip) and their NBN FW is sufficient for them, but I've done several FW conversions to Starlink because its been bad in those areas.

Whatever you do, do not get Starlink through Telstra, just pay the Congestion Tax and get the service directly. Telstra Starlink is a nightmare with its configuration and management.

You could get Starlink Residential for $99 and still be better than FW. You can compare Residential Lite vs Residiential here. The 24 hour average is about 100Mbps difference, but still sufficient for most people. It could also be more reliable and faster than NBN FW.

You can always try NBN FW, see how it is and then if its annoying, go to Starlink. Starlink does offer a 30 day trial, so you can get a refund if not happy within 30 days. Its not a "free" trial.

      • Thanks! Will get NBN FW and see how it goes. But good to know there's a Residential Lite plan, I didn't see that the last time I checked. Looks like there's a deal where the hardware is free if you stay on the plan for 12 months. $99/mth is a decent premium to pay over say NBN at ~$80/mth should the FW not work out. The only concern with NBN FW would be ping and congestion during peak hours for me. So long as I get 50Mbps down then I'm happy.

        • Looks like there's a deal where the hardware is free if you stay on the plan for 12 months

Only in certain locations. If you have looked it up already and got the Congestion Tax, no free hardware is available.

The only concern with NBN FW would be ping and congestion during peak hours for me.

Ping will possibly be lower on Starlink. But yes, a lot of conversions I have done complain its bad over the weekends or School Holidays.

          • @geekcohen: I have a pair of 4g MIMO yagi antennas too so might even try finding a tower further away if the NBN FW tower is shite.

Just checked Starlink residential and my location doesn't have the congestion tax, but the hardware is only free with the $139/m residential plan if you stay for 12 months. No option for free hardware with the $99 residential lite plan, which is kind of lame.

            • +1

It is cheaper to go the free hardware and pay the $139, than it is buy the hardware and go on the $99 plan. Remember, if you use a referral link, you can get 1 month free as well. See this deal.

Where does Starlink heil from anyway?

  • Can the Mini be used with the Standard $139 internet package at a fixed location? - Yes

    Has this changed recently?

I've been on the $195 plan for about 9 months now, from when they first came out. When I signed up, the option simply wasn't available to use the residential plans. You were forced onto Roaming only, either Capped ($80pm) or Unlimited ($195pm).

    • I don't believe there has been a recent change. Its been available as long as I can remember. You might need to sign up for the roaming and then change to the Residential, buts its available in the "Change Plan" of the Starlink account.

However, if you are in an area that has Congestion tax, you would need to pay that. If you convert back to the Roaming to take travelling, then come home and go back to Residential, you would pay the Congestion tax again.

Sometimes its easier to have the Standard Kit for home and then the roaming for when you need it.

This is my mini on pause, that I could change to Residential and activate it.

      • Interesting, I never revisited the plans after signing up. It's frustrating because it wasn't made clear to me on purchase, and the information isn't exactly common knowledge, or wasn't at the time.

Thanks for the info, I'll probably be pausing after this month, returning to ADSL2. Repairs finally done on our house after a tree fell on our house last June. :D
The mini will swap to capped roaming when we need it for caravan travelling around the state.

Yes, I agree the website lacks information. I would assume that it is probably to avoid confusion for most people and just list a few options or it could be a sales tactic.

          returning to ADSL2

The number of people I've done conversions for from ADSL2 to Starlink is growing. People are just saying it is getting worse and worse with the Telco's doing nothing to fix any issues.

The mini will swap to capped roaming when we need it for caravan travelling around the state.

          Great idea.

I bought from JB Hifi using the 10% discount coupon they sent via perks. Got it down to $404

  • Harvey Norman and Bunnings have also now dropped.

  • +2

Scored mine for $317 @ JB HiFi last night! A family member works there with their workers discount. Now to pay the $195 for Roaming Unlimited as 50gb would not cover many AFL games on KAYO!

  • Don't know why it has taken so long, but Starlink have finally dropped their price.

$449 for the Starlink Mini Kit through July 7th

If you are wanting a Mini and plan to use it, then use a Starlink Referral Link and you can get 1 month free (pay 1st month, 2nd month is free). This isn't applicable if you buy it from a 3rd party.

    • Yes, but only available for the roaming unlimited and not the 50gb/$80 plan as I found out lol.

  • Always a good idea to use the referral link. Using this gives less money to their leader 😆

You can find the referral link in the middle of ozbargain's store page here. It's the link in a grey box embedded in the word "random".

    Hope that helps!

    • +1

That only works when you buy directly from Starlink. It doesn't work if you buy from a retailer and then sign up. It used to, but its been changed.

      • And only for the roaming unlimited plan too.

        • +1

Interesting, had not heard that. Wonder whether for Residential, it needs to be the $139 Residential and if you cannot get it for the $99 Residential Lite.

          • @geekcohen: Just going off my starlink account which is still paused and has never been activated yet.

I am not going on experience as this is all new after grabbing the $299 mini deal early this year

as a travelling back up when travelling. There was a notifiction on my account page, but

cannot confirm as not keen to try at 2 $80 lol.

            • @ozhunter68: T&Cs don't show any exclusions on the plan - https://www.starlink.com/au/support/article/eee7e99e-a736-f1…

Referrals will only issue credits to the Residential and Roam subscriptions.

This referral program only applies to Starlink's Residential and Roam offerings where Starlink is immediately available. Referred customers in areas listed as “Waitlisted” on the Availability Map are excluded from this offer: starlink.com/map.

Just had about 3rd parties, which I already knew.

Kits purchased from a retailer or reseller are not eligible for the referral program. Please note, no credit will be given, even if a referral link was used during activation.

              • @geekcohen: FYI I did order from Starlink through an activated account,

and I am based at an adress that Starlink states as unavailable (SEQ. for

                residential activations).

                • +1

@ozhunter68: Oh yeah, you have to be a new account to get the referral credit. If you order a new kit through the existing account via the referral link, it won't work.

                  • @geekcohen: It was a New account, which was activated at time of order.

                    • @ozhunter68: Oh, okay, apologies. If you paused straight away, might not have worked because you need to pay for a full month to get the 2nd month credit.

                      • +1

@geekcohen: I read a lot of info on all of this before ordering as well as after whilst waiting for delivery,

and yes, I realised I had to activate the mini on a set plan, and keep it active without

pausing for whole month before getting the free month.

Maybe because I paused (and is still paused lol) before activating that altered my options?

There was a clear Notification Box stating the referral link free month offer was only available for

roaming for the unlimited, not the 50gb/$80 plan in Australia.

Might have to take some time and get in touch with starlink direct to clarify. If I do I will

                        rapport back here.

                      • @geekcohen: Check out this vid, at the 4.30 mark it shows the exact notifications box that I got.
