  • What’s the cost on top of the door bell yearly plan?
    Is it worth it?

    • +1

Ring's main advantage is seamless integration with Amazon Alexa - Echo, Echo Hub etc. Even without subscription you can get Alexa to announce who's out there and watch live stream from video doorbell/camera. Subscription gives you online storage for events. Cheapest is Basic at A$49.95/yr for 1 device, Standard covers up to 4 devices + extra features for A$149.95/yr, Premium covers all devices + 24/7 recording at A$299.95/yr.

Ring cameras/doorbells are well made and simple to setup. Mobile app works well too. If you only have 1 device then Basic plan is fine. More than 1 device, go Standard.

People often complain Ring needs subscription while others (Eufy, Reolink) don't so they're "better value". I prefer online subscription over just local storage though - gives peace of mind that footage gets saved in cloud no matter what happens. Set and forget.

My experience with other brands was hit and miss. Eufy doesn't connect to Alexa properly, notifications sometimes delayed, sometimes just stops working until you open the app and click I agree to the new terms. What a joke - it may stop monitoring and you won't notice it until after several weeks. Reolink similar - can't connect reliably to Alexa which defeats the whole point of smart home setup. YMMV but after trying DIY stuff I just went with Ring + Alexa ecosystem and it works fine.

  • Can anyone comment on my use case…

I want to monitor if someone approaches my motorbike in a place where there is no power (I assume the battery can handle this fine).

But also with no permanent WiFi. I will only need to monitor it when me and my phone is within 30m of the cam. I will only need notifications of motion when I am indoor within 30m of the camera and bike.

Is this doable and ideal? If not, can anyone think of a better way?

  • Thanks..i may not have been clear. I only need it to work whilst I'm there with the bike. So I'm hoping to wifi hotspot to it only when I'm there.
