  • Cheaper at MyDeal and Ebay (with coupons) and even cheaper again from Aliexpress if you want to wait for it.

Be aware, this needs a power supply so isn't particularly useful for wall mounting etc… The FP3 sensor (newer version, with battery power) will also be coming out soon if that's a factor for anyone.

  • Genuine question — not being sarcastic. I noticed the Tapo ones are $32. Just wondering, what advantages do these have over them? I'm considering this for my mum, who’s elderly, mainly for security purposes

Not sure about this. Sometimes cheaper devices have more problems with sensitivity and connection to wifi (though this can happen with expensive ones too)

If you are after 2 they are on the Aqara Store for $116.10 each

  • It would be nice to have presence sensors, but even with the near ATL they are insanely expensive. Especially since the motion sensors work well (as long as you are moving) to control lights in the laundry and stairwell etc: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002481223841.html

What makes these so expensive compared to a vanilla $15 motion sensor?

  • +1

They use mmWave instesd of the generic IR. Allows it to detect very small movements, even if you are sitting in a room watching tv or something, most IR sensor ones might think youve gone, but the mmWave ones will be able to detect you. Supposely

  • Has anyone tried the Meross presence sensor, and how does it compare to the Aqara one?

      I have both the:
      - Apollo Automation MSR-2 (LD2410B 24GHz)
      - Meross MS600 (PIR+ISM 24GHz)

The Meross can be integrated to HA via Matter (but if you do so you (currently) only expose Illuminance and Occupancy Sensors and no controls); if you also integrate using the Meross LAN (HACS) integration you also get the other Sensors plus a bunch of Configuration and Diagnostic entities

The Apollo integrates with ESPHome and you get many more Sensors (e.g. Pressure, Temperature, UV, 3 Occupancy ranges instead of 1, etc)

The Meross has an interesting feature in that it combines both an old style PIR motion sensor and a new style mmWave occupancy radar in the one unit. I believe the PIR is used to "wake" up the unit when motion is detected and then the mmWave takes over for occupancy - one possible plus of the Meross is it can be set to detect motion out to ~12m (presence only out to ~6m), whereas most other presence sensors have a range of up to 6m

Note both of these sensors are really aimed at detecting Presence/Occupancy (i.e. can sense human breathing, even if person is otherwise still, but can only tell how far away from the sensor you are in a straight line measurement - not x/y coordinates. Generally also can configure sensitivity for certain gates/distances i.e. 3m-4m is low sensitivity so the fan doesn't trigger presence)

The Aqara FP2 uses the IWR6843 60GHz mmWave chip and is a motion/tracking unit (Multi-Person and Zone Support) (like LD2420, LD2450 based sensors) where it can track where you are in the room on a x/y coordinate grid and even set zones (say couch) but are not great at still or presence detection

I think Aqara also has a occupancy/presence based unit (the FP1E)

  • Just wondering, if it can be used only for material beings, I mean not for paranormal activities? Anyone had any expereinces to share?

    • I have used Aqara FP2,FP1e, Meross MS600 and also have Aeotec multisensor 6,7 dotted around the house.

Multisensor 6,7 work on zigbee and are rock solid with constant usb power. Uptime 95%-99% (battery mode not a fan of)

FP2 Took me awhile to get use to as it has zones, when setup properly I have almost 99% uptime running through smartthings edge driver direct. I have 2 covering dining , sofa, kitchen.

Meross MS 600 recently got 1 from deal, really good if you dont mind wifi.

      Few tips for starting

      • Always find a constant usb power ver. Retrigger times are better dont need to worry about battery.
-Presence sensors are not required for transit areas. Ie. hallways, stairs, porch, alfresco, garage. (Use a simple two liner : if motion is detected on/ if motion not detected for 2min off) makes things feel more seemless.
-Local everything if possible, zigbee, zwave, wifi
-Never had issues with ghosts after FP2 settled takes awhile and need to mark zones entry/exit. Also mark the zones slightly larger than it actually is. Boundaries between zones isnt 100% .
