And having ordered one recently from east digital, I can confirm what many others have said. Packing of the disk could not be better, worth considering instead of Amazon. They make sure they are looked after in transit. And not much to go by, but mine has been no issues for a month , may there be many many more:)

      THIS!!

I have ordered drives from both. Two from Metrocom . Both boxed in static bag, some air padding in large open boxes. The drives could easily bounce around and one was DOA and one I refused to keep.

East Digital are in foam, sealed tight. Order over 20 drives from them, most recent, despite being delayed, delivered perfect as before. Foam encased drives in static bags. Lucked out on last lot too with low Hrs

      • Sadly the same for my recent Newegg (via eBay) order. The drives were in bubble wrap bags, but they weren't sealed correctly and were open on one side. One drive was DOA.

    Previous cheapest $239

The stats on my east digital WD drives were much better than my amazon WD drives. Amazon drives were absolutely flogged whereas east digital drives were… mildly flogged. And I've run all sorts of checks with GSmartControl, etc. to validate that the data hasn't been fudged… If they can still fudge beyond that then good on them

  • Ive been eyeing tbese for weeks but apparently the chache is disabled or something. Similar reports in the 1 star reviews.

  • Whats the life like on one of these vs a brand new consumer drive ? Say for a24/7 plex server

    • You can expect ~2.5 more years of 24/7 use with 95% confidence in your Synology DS220+, assuming
      1. a real-world AFR of ~2% &
      2. it was made in Jun 2021 &
      3. usage before purchase ~3.0–3.1 years.

  • +1

Confidence Remaining Safe Use (AFR = 2%)
    99% ~0.5 years (~6 months)
    95% ~2.6 years
    90% ~5.3 years
    80% ~8.0 years

  • In summary, you can expect 5 + years in normal condition. However, do you really need run plex server 24/7? If you run 5 hours per day, that will make huge difference.

    • Many people running their Plex server would have more than one drive - if you have 5 drives, then you'll need to multiply your failure rates by 5…

If you run 5 hours per day, that will make huge difference.

Spinning the drive up and down every single day, complete with the heat cycling that causes, only impacts negatively on the drive life. Hard Drives are most reliable when you just leave them on 24/7.

      • Not true.

The HDDs should be able to cycle up/down about 5 times a day for 30 years.

There is a report somewhere if you want to know more.

        • Not true.

It's absolutely true - how many drives have you had a drive die during use ? Drive death almost always happens at spin-up time, commonly the drive is working absolutely fine until powered off, and then it never comes back to life.

The HDDs should be able to cycle up/down about 5 times a day for 30 years.

          ?

Hard Drives don't generally last for 30 years, that statistic makes no sense. You're doing very well if your drive is still healthy after 15 years !

There are many, many threads out there that cover this subject in great detail, start reading. The common consensus is that the drives cool down when spun down, and warm up again when running - and these cycles are what eventually cause failure.

  • I bought one of these drives a couple of weeks ago and it didnt work out of the box. The HDD spun up, but not recognised on Windows 11 at all. Easy return via Amazon thankfully.

  • Does East Digital actually offer 3 years warranty? I can only see 1

    • +1

3 for refurbs, the link they posted above is used or pull.

      • Oh, thanks. Another noob question: What's … the difference?
Also, do they even sell refurbished WD drives? Cant find one on the website at the moment & past deals only have used ones

        • Used / pulls are straight from the server to you and usually only have a year warranty + higher failure rates

Refurbished is factory refurbished, usually it’s the portable drives that have failed somehow and been repaired + SMART data zeroed. They typically fail less and have 3 years warranty usually

          Their stock changes often
