  • Is there a new one coming out? Wifi 7?

    • -6

      No.

They will skip it and move straight to Wi-Fi 8.

  • Interested in views on this versus the Eero equivalent? My working assumption is the Eero wins on stability?

    • What makes you think this isn't stable?

      • The Eero is famed for being rock solid, even if it lacks the speed or features of some competitors.

My Google Nest has been rock solid too over many years.

Onluy from reading online, the Eero is more reliable with better range. The Eero I have also receives updates every 1-2 months with new features. So while neither will be bad, the eero just has more range. I am using an Eero original with wifi 5 with no issues in a household of 5 people. I should upgrade soon but waiting for a cheap one on marketplace thats not from an ISP.

      • What's wrong with the one from the ISP?

    • +1

I can't comment on the Eero, but I can tell you these can only be configured from the Google Home app. There's no web interface, so you can't configure anything from your computer for example, if that matters to you.

I haven't noticed any speed or stability issues per se. The Chromecast in the bedroom keeps connecting to the access point at the other end of the house, rather than the one in the next room and I can't see a way to change that, which causes videos to buffer sometimes.

      • Does the google home app require a user to be logged into a google account to use these?

        • Yes, unfortunately.

      • Thanks, appreciate the considered feedback!

  • Amazon lists the RRP of GA03690-AU as $699AUD down to $376, but JB has it as $499 down to $377.

Update: Ah found they were $349 for the 3 pack in the past at JB https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/1gvoe9o/wor…

  • I got the original google wifi from back in 2019, are these gonna offer me anything more other than just the newer wifi?

    • New has wifi 6. Better WIFI Frequency. Again if your google wifi working good and has good signal. i don't recommend you changing it.

    • Can’t comment on performance, but it’s worth noting that you lose the speakers in the new version, and they’re not backwards compatible with the old Google hardware. The mesh units with built in speakers is a luxury we (ourselves) can’t do without, otherwise we’d have upgraded to the newer model because we have hit our wifi speed limits.

Buy these for range, not for speed.
