XFX Radeon 7850 $169 + Shipping ($22 to QLD) or Pickup

90

In the search to find a decent graphics card that will fit in my MCPC, I found this.

Its about $20 less than any other 7850 according to StaticIce, but postage might be a bit of a killer.

  • Good deal if you can pickup, OK deal with postage (you can probably find cheaper).

I have to add, HD 7850's in general are excellent value at the moment. Not that much less performance than the $300-400 cards really, and certainly it'll play all games smoothly at 1080p and max settings (or close enough) for some time to come.

This is only the 1GB version, a lot of new games need more than that these days, I would spend a bit more to get the normal 2 GB version.
This 1 GB 7850 was brought in as a cheap alternative to compete against the 650 ti.

    • I can't think of anything that needs the 2GB one and in the benchmarks I have seen, the 1GB 7850 performs about the same 2GB one, I don't think its really worth the money.

      • Most of the newer games are using more then 1g at 1080p

This would be an OK deal if it was 2g, 1g versions are much cheaper.

    • I think 2GB is only useful at very high res, though, right?

      • It is useful for 1080p and beyond. With Anti aliasing turned on (and high detail textures) yes, you will need 2GB of RAM to make the most of the card.

  • would the 7850 or the gtx660 be better?

Do NOT use hwcompare.com. It's "google-spam", designed to catch people who want an actual comparison between two hardware items and serve them ads.

It contains no actual benchmarks, only automatically compares the published specs of each card, which can be very misleading.

It's not even human-written, the article part is just computer-generated sentences based on the specs.

So it gives you no real info as to which card is faster at all.

Toms hardware hierarchy chart or anandtech bench are much better. The at least include actual performance tests.

  • Saw this earlier today as well when browsing Centrecom. Dismissed it when I saw 1GB VRAM.

Enterprising modders note: Core Edition XFX cards (not sure about their regular cards) appear to have warranty void stickers on the back of their cooler mounting screws, preventing you from changing the cooler. See this review which covers the 7850. If you're patient enough, in this video review on YouTube near the end you can see the guy turn the card around slightly and see the stickers on this card too.

  • can this be xfire with 6850?

    • Don't believe so, I think it has to be in the same series to Xfire
