No Purchase Fees on TCN eftpos Gift Cards (In-Store Only, Excludes Bromley and Bluey Designed Gift Cards) @ Coles

290

Full credit to GCDB and for the use tips!!

Next week's upcoming gift card deal at Coles! Best prepaid eftpos gift card offer we've seen all year, sadly.

Best uses for these offers include:

  • meeting a minimum spend offer for a credit card
  • circumventing Visa, Mastercard and AmEx surcharges at places like ALDI
  • converting one prepaid gift card into another

During previous TCN eftpos offers, you could even use them at Australia Post, so some people bought them with a points-earning credit card and then used them to pay bills. It may still be possible to do so.

  • $400 eftpos Gift Card + $9.95 Purchase Fee: save $9.95
  • $200 eftpos Gift Card + $7.95 Purchase Fee: save $7.95
  • $100 eftpos Gift Card + $5.95 Purchase Fee: save $5.95
  • $50 eftpos Gift Card + $5.95 Purchase Fee: save $5.95
  • $30 eftpos Gift Card + $3.95 Purchase Fee: save $3.95

Limit 5 Gift Cards per customer. Offer valid only in store at Coles Supermarkets (excludes Coles Online, Coles Express and purchases via giftcards.com.au or coles.scanshoppay.com.au), subject to store availability. Offer applies to pictured cards only; excludes Bromley and Bluey designed eftpos cards. While stocks last, no rainchecks. Offer valid from 18/6/25 to 24/6/25. Gift Cards cannot be used to purchase other Gift Cards at Coles. Refer to individual gift card for terms and conditions.

Best prepaid gift card offer we've seen all year, sadly.

Bit of a stretch, no actual savings and thats supposed to be a deal?

  • +2

Do these count towards Flybuy points and credit card points?

  • How about gifting cash instead?

    • I'm waiting

  • +1

Can pay ATO bill at AusPost?

    • If the staff lets you

    • +2

As per the OP and GCDB website:

During previous TCN eftpos offers, you could even use them at Australia Post, so some people bought them with a points-earning credit card and then used them to pay bills. It may still be possible to do so.

      • Interesting, so it should work at Auspost for DEFT too then ?

        • +2

In theory, yes, because the DEFT website says they only accept payments through the Post Billpay system in-store via eftpos (i.e. SAV/CHQ), as well as cheques.

In practice, it will depend on whether the staff member will allow you to use a prepaid gift card on Post Billpay payments. When I paid my car rego at Australia Post last year:

          • At the first outlet, the staff member stopped me from trying to use a prepaid gift card as a payment method.

          • At the second outlet, the staff member was perfectly fine with me doing this, and remarked that someone the day before used six prepaid gift cards to pay for their bill.

          • @WookieMonster:

At the first outlet, the staff member stopped me from trying to use a prepaid gift card as a payment method.

Can I ask how did they do this? Are they inspecting the card you use before you swipe it through the Eftpos terminal?

            • +1

@ryefig: The old lady cancelled the transaction from her end and sternly told me that gift cards cannot be used to pay for bills (and there was no further explanation).

The issue was that the EFTPOS terminal made it very awkward to swipe the gift card, mostly because you need the gift card front facing up and almost parallel to the countertop, which makes it quite easy for the staff member and the customer to see what is being swiped. It is not like swipe mechanisms on most EFTPOS terminals, where it would be easier to hide the type of card you just swiped.

              • +2

@WookieMonster: I see. Maybe they have internal procedures where they are supposed to check that bill payments are not to be made with gift cards, but obviously not everyone is doing this.
There must be so many different gift card designs out there it would be hard for staff to monitor from a short glance when a customer uses the payment terminal - so unless they are actually handling and inspecting the card they probably wont pick up on every single type of gift card.

Worst case scenario, put a sticker over the front to make it look like a customised regular bank card ?

                • +1

                  Potentially.

It could also be that only some managers have instructed their staff to look out for this, and some of the those staff only bother to police it. Who knows.

unless they are actually handling and inspecting the card they probably wont pick up on every single type of gift card.

Fair point. I think the design of the gift card in this deal is particularly problematic, because Gift Card is written in large text closest to the staff member when you attempt to swipe it…

You could try to cover it up with a sticker or something, but considering how unusual it is these days to swipe a card, even just trying to swipe a card could draw attention.

                • @ryefig: Use an old Samsung Galaxy S6 with MST to emulate the card, then it looks like you're just paying with your phone.

                  • @JIMB0: I have a phone like that, can anyone confirm these GCs can be added to Samsung Wallet?

                    • +1

                      @dumdum2: No.

                      • You cannot manually add this gift card to a mobile wallet (or to the TCN app).

                      • The gift card in this deal is also sold in a digital version elsewhere, but the relevant website does not give you an option to convert to digital (which is an option you see for some other TCN gift cards running on the eftpos network, e.g. TCN Restaurant, TCN Good Food).

                      • The digital version of this gift card only supports Apple Pay and Google Wallet. It does not support Samsung Wallet. If you launch the TCN app on a Samsung phone, open a digital TCN eftpos gift card and choose Add to Mobile Wallet, you are only given an option to add to Google Wallet.

              • +2

@WookieMonster: It's always an old lady, also at Coles.

              • @WookieMonster: Hi Wookie, so are you supposed to swipe the gift card and not insert it?

                • +2

                  @mameimo: Correct.

The gift cards in this deal only has a magstripe for swiping.

You cannot insert the gift card in this deal, because it does not come with a chip. It would be prohibitively expensive to manufacture disposable gift cards with a chip en masse, because it would require a chip and the associated circuitry inside each gift card.

You also cannot go to the TCN website and request to convert this into a digital gift card (which is something you can do with some other TCN gift cards, e.g. TCN Restaurant gift cards).

That also means if you are using an EFTPOS terminal with no magstripe (e.g. Zeller Terminal 2) or an EFTPOS terminal that does not process eftpos SAV transactions when you swipe the card (e.g. Square EFTPOS terminals), you cannot use the gift card in this deal at that merchant.

                  • +1

@WookieMonster: Thanks Wookie! Is the right side of the EFTPOS terminal where you would be swiping the gift card? Magstripe facing down and gift card front away from the terminal?

                    • +4

@mameimo: It depends on the EFTPOS terminal, as they come in all different shapes and sizes.

                      • Most EFTPOS terminals have the magstripe reader on the right-hand side of the terminal (e.g. EFTPOS terminals at Coles, Woolworths, JB Hi-Fi, Ampol Foodary, Shell Coles/Reddy Express, The Good Guys, H&M, plus the older-style ALDI EFTPOS terminals). You need to swipe with the magstripe at the bottom of the gift card and the front of the gift card away from the screen.

                      • Some EFTPOS terminals (e.g. newer-style ALDI EFTPOS terminals) have the magstripe reader in the top of the EFTPOS terminal, above the screen. You need to swipe with the magstripe at the bottom of the gift card toward the screen, and the front of the gift card facing up towards you.

                      • Some EFTPOS terminals (e.g. CommBank Smart EFTPOS terminal) have the magstripe reader at the bottom of the EFTPOS terminal, below the screen. You need to swipe with the magstripe at the top of the gift card towards the screen, and the front of the gift card facing up towards you.

                      • Some EFTPOS terminals have the magstripe reader hidden in the EFTPOS terminal. For example, the Worldline Yoximo has the magstripe reader on the right-hand side of the PIN pad, but you need to flip up the PIN shield in order to access it. Once flipped up, you need to swipe with the gift card facing up towards you (I think?) and the magstripe towards the PIN pad.

                      • Some EFTPOS terminals (e.g. Zeller Terminal 2) have no magstripe reader anywhere. This is probably not overly surprising, considering magstripe payments are more vulnerable to fraudulent transactions when compared with contactless and chip payments, plus Mastercard cards will not have magstripes by 2033.

@WookieMonster: Thanks for the detailed reponse Wookie!

I just meant with the EFTPOS machines at Auspost like the one you linked in the instagram post https://www.instagram.com/p/DJ0pntmoJR-/

                        • @mameimo: Oh, I see.

With that Australia Post EFTPOS terminal in that picture, swipe with the magstripe towards the screen and the gift card facing upwards towards you.

          • @WookieMonster: Did the staff at the first outlet give you a reason for stopping you?

    • -1

Hoping for an actual 10% off deal, ez 10% off the tax bill!

  • -2

when will we get the 10% off mastercard deals back

  • Can you use these to pay ATO bill online?

    • +1

      No

      • Why is that? I remember using similar cards in the past

        • +3

The gift card in this deal only supports the eftpos (SAV/CHQ) network, and the gift card does not support any online transactions.

ATO online also does not accept transactions processed through the eftpos network; it only accepts transactions processed through the Visa, Mastercard or AMEX networks.

The "similar cards" you refer to are most likely prepaid Visa gift cards (e.g. Vanilla Visa gift cards) or prepaid Mastercard gift cards (e.g. Coles Mastercard gift cards).

You could instead use the gift card in this deal to make a payment to the ATO via Post Billpay at an Australia Post outlet, but:

Can I assume Category Choice Grocery can be used to buy this?
It worked when I bought Coles Mastercard.

    • Would also love to know this

    • +3

Yes, i have try it today, worked.

  • no more Post Billpay by eftpos card to Citi Ready account

    • since when?

      • got email:

We wanted to let you know that from 15 May 2025, we will no longer be accepting Post Billpay as a payment option and it will no longer appear on your account statement.

        • thanks

  • +2

given the difficulties with post billpay and given that we can't use it to pay ato, rates, etc, does anyone have any clever ideas what we can do with these?

    • +1

Heaps: council, state government, buying expensive equipment (printers, cars, machineries), general shopping while avoiding credit card surcharge.

  • +1

Confirming these still work at Australia Post

    • +1

what bill was it ? ie. council rates? credit card payment? thanks

Can you please, if you have to press Savings? and add pin?

      • +2

Strata fees. Swipe card, select savings and then enter pin. Also asked them to part pay $400 each time.

        • Thanks a lot, got few council and insurance bills to pay. will see if i can pay it @ Aus. Post.

    • +2

Yep just paid my $2K+ strata bill at my local AusPost with no issues as well; $400 each time and then paid the remainder with normal EFTPOS card

  • How long does stock of these last during promotions?

  • Can you buy with Coles gift card?

  • Anyone able to guide me in the right direction? I got these from Coles, and went to Woolies to get the TCN cards on the points promo this week. I only did it because they are about a minute walk away from each other and it didn't seem bad (although I thought, little did I think that 1 minute would turn into almost 60 minutes) I went to the self checkout, paid, however the transaction was stuck on "finalising payment" and basically the machine had completely froze, didn't activate the TCN cards or give any points (as the transaction was never finalised) now I was there with the manager for quite literally 50ish minutes trying to work out what would happen, I am assuming that it will just bounce back onto the eftpos card, as the Balance of the card is $0, however there is nothing in the transaction history, am I correct in assuming that the money will likely bounce back onto the eftpos card? I know the manager personally so if anything goes wrong I can obviously call/message her but some clarification would make me feel more at ease as I had a similar issue at Coles a while ago and the money did NOT bounce back, however I am hoping Woolies may be different. Quite a drama I should say, I couldn't help but start laughing as another lady in the self checkout area was also having the exact same issue with another register and her register also completely froze and took out her payment for her groceries, clearly the registers weren't having the best night I guess!

    • u may double check TCN Gift card bought from Woolies if it's actually activated. I met a few times machine frozen but still proceeded.
TCN eftpos transaction detail will appear after 24hr.

      • The assistant manager checked last night to see if they were activated and they were not, I had to split the payment and had only paid half of the balance when the machine froze, so the transaction was never fully paid so I don't think that would have activated the gift cards, everything that could have gone wrong, definitely did, unfortunately.

        • your money is safe. but that manager didn't solve eg. refund directly yesterday?
I had once wrong charged when purchasing GC. the manager did "virtual refund" then applied to new GC straight away, though quite complicated he had to get higher level manager to approve on screen a few times.

          • @test8888: I went back and thankfully they did exactly this today and just gave me a Visa gift card instead!

        • +1

They just need to refund you the half that you paid. Problem solved.
