Apple MacBook Air M3 Grey: 13" from $1592 (24GB/512GB), 15" Grey from $1796 (24GB/512GB) + Delivery ($0 C&C/in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

850

8 core CPU, 10 core GPU for both. Only grey is available. It's clearance so ACT FAST. My store in Melb only had 1 13 inch remaining.

512gb is decent, enough for uni/casual use. 24gb of ram is amazing though. Great for CS students, who have 30 tabs open, videos playing and IDEs open all at the same time. M4 is considerably better than M3, but I don't think the performance would matter to most people.

I got $19 off, with the online chat.

Reminder the M3 doesn’t support two monitors with the laptop screen on. That reason only makes the M4 worth the extra $ imo.

Also remember to compare with AOC pricing.

    • +3

M3 on M4 was the biggest apple silicon performance increase.

$1775 for AOC 16gb, 512, 2050 for 24gb. I think this is better. If you really need the performance, buy a pro.

      • +3

Who said anything about performance? My point is the M3 can’t support two screens and the laptop display. That’s crazy.

Also the Air has no fan compared to the Pro. This can be seen as a negative because of performance but I think it’s a positive because you don’t have a fan that will get chocked with dust.

        • +4

I don't think that majority of MBA buyers will want to use two external monitors, seems like a non-issue to me.

          • +5

@topherboi: I think technically, it can't support three screens at once.

So you can have two externals, and for most uses, it should be more than enough.

            • @dyziplen: Can't you use a docking station for the monitors?

              • @itzSTARSCREAM: No. Not unless by "docking station" you mean shitty options like USB DisplayLink.

                • +1

@PainToad: You can connect a USB-C DisplayPort based dock, close the lid and use two external monitors. That's native, no DisplayLink rubbish.

Using a laptop display while docked is abysmal ergonomics anyway. Close it.

                  • @tp0: Why are you telling me what I already said? I stated

doesn’t support two monitors with the laptop screen on

          • +2

@topherboi: Cool. I'm giving a heads up for those who do.

        • MBP M3 can

        • +5

You said "only" reason. I'm just pointing out that the M4 is a pretty big leap over the M3. But M3 is still fine.

        • -1

          Yeh it can.

          • @TheOtherBigAl: No it can't. Not with the laptop display on/open as well (which is what I said).

      • +2

The Pro is definitely a stronger laptop in general but I found that for my specific use case (photo editing) the pro was not that much faster and noticeably worse on battery life so I returned the pro and kept my air.

        • Which chip for each model did you have?

          • +1

            @topherboi: Macbook Air 13" M4 10/10 core 32GB RAM 2TB SSD
            Macbook Pro 14" M4 Pro 14/20 core 24GB RAM 1TB SSD

Navigation of the UI was similar enough that I didn't see a big difference between the laptops.

Import and building standard previews for ~740GB photos (~15000 50MP photos) from a CF type A 4.0 card and reader took about 44 minutes on the M4 Pro with 27% battery remaining vs 61 minutes on the M4 Air with about 67% battery remaining. RAM usage hit around 17-18GB on both laptops working with 50MP photos.

            • -3

@eecan: 16gb unironically isn't enough anymore. My old Dell freezes/crashes with 16. And that's just with code editors, videos and web browsers. Very pleased to see this at 24gb. Also wtf is that MBA config lol

              • +1

@John Barosa: 32GB RAM because I want the laptop to last and the more RAM the better with Lightroom!

2TB SSD because I want 1TB of free space to import 1TB memory cards directly on to the laptop instead of having to attach an external SSD. Its much more painful to be juggling those if I am importing pics on the move.

              • +1

                @John Barosa:

                16gb unironically isn't enough anymore

                On Windows, perhaps.

                • @topherboi: Even on Windows my Surface Pro 6 with 8gb ram runs perfectly fine, multiple tabs, ide, Excel all at once. Some likely in page file but not noticeable when using

                • @topherboi: Linux. I get the "Out of ram closing VS Code" message constantly. Windows was even worse. At least Linux gives me a chance to close the program, Windows full on crashes it restarts.

        • editing my RAW's on M1 Max MBP 16. 64/2TB which is a bit overkill, but I got it for a very good price. everything is super smooth and lasts forever.

RAM is a bit overkill specifically, but hey that's the config I came across. RAM usage rarely goes over 30 or so, even when I keep all the apps open.

16GB base M1 Pro model was running out of RAM occasionally, but slowdown wasn't much to notice. anyways with 64 much smoother. plus it's double the RAM bandwidth at 400GBs. and double the GPU cores which are used in AI tasks (object selection, noise reduction, some transforms etc.)

briefly used my friend's M4 Pro, and and it's faster here and there, but overall it's the same experience. no reason to upgrade.. and definitely to have similar spec I will have to shell out 6.5k no thanks. I'll be fine with M1 Max, nothing wrong with it at all, Apple will need to use other tech advancements to convince me to upgrade..

if not upgrading from earlier versions, yeah M4 is faster significantly in benchmarks, but not really noticeable in real life.

some workflows will benefit from it, sure. but screen alone is worth stepping up from Air. that miniled panel is awesome. don't care about Nano stains

        • I have a Pro (it says Apple M3, 4+4 cores). I don't understand what's the difference between that and this M3 Air.

          • +1

@Averell: U got a fake pro. you get better speakers, a fan and display.

    • -6

Literally sitting here with a Macbook Air M3, 2 x Philips 325E8 32'' (2560x1440) and laptop monitor all as independent screens.

      • Yeah nah, you're not.

        https://support.apple.com/en-au/117373

You can connect two external displays simultaneously when you close the lid of your MacBook Air or MacBook Pro with M3 chip.

You are not wrong. I dont know why people down votes you. See the link:

You are not wrong. I dont know why people down votes you. See the link:

They're getting voted down because they are wrong. Just like you are.

The M3 in the MBA cannot output three (two monitors + the laptop screen) displays at once without an external USB GPU like DisplayLink (which sucks).

These are facts. Stop spreading incorrect information that could result in people wasting money on a device that doesn't suit their needs.

What you have linked to is a USB GPU. So you're actually proving my point. And just like I said, it sucks because:
          * "3840X2160@30Hz"
          * "decoders to give video streaming" - ie. it's encoding a virtual screen and sending it over HDMI. The performance will be shit.

@PainToad: Go and have a look at the rating of the product. Don't make people miss a good opportunity of getting a macbook.

            • @Jozhuang: I don't need to read the reviews. The negatives I listed are from the product's own description. Reviews don't change limitations.

    13" M4 Macbook air $1500 @Costco. NB membership required.

    • +6

That's 16GB/256GB base model. Not the same comparison. 24GB/512GB M4 Air @ Costco is $2100

      • It's also worse than the AOC price for the base spec ($1487.20) and 24GB/512GB ($2062.50)

        • I am considering whether AOC education requires verification?

I guess its time to price match this with Officeworks and cash in on them gift cards

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/macbook-ai…

$1704.30 after pricematch if anyone is wondering.

    • +1

If the employee has a brain, they won't. T&Cs state that Officeworks won't price beat

    • Officeworks don’t price match clearance lines!!!!!!!

      • It is called Pricebeat!

Gerry calls it his ripp off

  • Spend the extra and get an M4 Pro: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/macbook-pr….

+Has multiple ports (saves you having to buy port adapters)
+Better cooling due to the fans
    +Screen is superior
+Resale is far better for a Pro (so many used Air’s on Gumtree and Facebook for sale compared to Pro’s)

    • I don't get why resale is brought up. MBP will depreciate at a faster rate than an MBA, even if it has a higher resale value, so you'll end up losing money anyway. 3k M1 Pros are being sold for 1300. And 1.5k M1 MBAs are sold for 700.

Also these products are in different price categories. 3k vs 1.8k. 1.2k gets me a budget PC, which can outperform the M4 Pro. And tbh, Macbooks are just pretty toys. They're reliable sure, but can't do real work. Especially for Software Engineering.

      • +1

Yes, it amazes me that Apple hasn’t worked hard with CAD software developers to do decent Mac versions. Because if they did, a MBP would smoke anything like a Lenovo P series. And possibly at a lower price.

        • ARM vs X86. Plus the devs must use Metal not OpenGL/Vulkan/DX12. Probably a lot of effort to get it running on Mac Still suprising CAD isn't avaialble on Mac. I thought designing shit was done mostly on Mac.

So sad though. MBP is the greatest laptop on the market, but it can't do anything, so it's pretty much a pretty chromebook. Wish Apple doubled down on Rosetta, as Linux did with Proton.

    • All true, but no need for most people. That is like saying a landcruiser Sahara is better when all a person needs is a CX5.
I pondered long and hard over base MBP M4 over tricked out MBA M4 recently (similarly priced and specced except for the features you list which are desirable, but not a deal breaker).
Went the MBA and couldn’t be happier. Absolutely silent, the screen is amazingly superior to my work Dell and the battery seems to last forever.

  • Any giftcard offers to use with this deal? The 15" after a 10% off would ve a no brainer!

  • Bought one!

    • +1

From which store? I need my commission/s

  • +3

Sadly I had to purchase one on 3 June for $1794. I purchased the 13" M3 24/512 from JB on a price match, and it replaced an old 13" Intel based MBA.

The machine is incredible. I'm a software developer and I use it exclusively for work. It handles my workflow of having a dozen docker containers running simultaneously while also doing backend development in VSCode. I'm not doing Java development atm so I'm not sure how it would do with a heavier IDE, but I'm guessing that the 24GB of ram is likely enough.

Keyboard feels great, screen is nice, and it's incredibly lightweight.

So while I'm sad that I lost a bit of cash buying it before the proper EOFY, I'm very pleased with my purchase, especially in the sexy Midnight colour that I chose. If you're upgrading from an Intel processor, I think you'll be blown away by the speed of Apple's chips, assuming you do something beyond basic computer usage.

I also don't regret going with an M3 vs an M4, perhaps because I am so used to old speeds. The savings is worth it imo.

    • +1

Ultimate models rarely go on discount. U paid a good price.

I'm glad to see that its fine for work. I was afraid it wouldn't be up to the task. My 8gb M1 sucks

  • Would anyone know if installing windows on these MBAs or MBPs reduce the overall performance?

  • Why hurry for an OLD model?

Bought an old macbook once and it was the biggest waste of money. But I love my M1.

    • M3 M4 M5, they will all become old in time. Most people can't tell the difference, and I'm saving half a grand, so yeah. The M3 Mac will receive updates until at least 2030, probably 2031/2032. M4 may receive updates for a year longer, is it worth it spending an extra 500 for that one year?

Also I bet u bought the 8gb model. That's a piece of crap

      • My M1 is my first Mac. What I hate most is the single monitor restriction. Everything else I knew. Its keyboard is crap.
Fanless is the main point, and the M1 leaves Intel in the dark ages.
M4 is already known as a sweet spot. And they do come with 16GB.
Mac mini is also regarded as bang for buck.

    • +4

In most cases it's better to buy an overspec'd year-old model than the current year's base model, if the prices are the same. Very incremental year-over-year improvements for the past few years.

  • +4

I bought a macbook after being a Windows person for a long time. My use case was something light and small with good battery life that was ultra portable. I have been so impressed with my MacBook Air M3. The battery life is incredible and far better than any windows laptop that I've ever had and I would guess is on the market (not an expert) for the same price point. I got a price matcher office works with Costco and use discounted gift cards a while back. Just posting this in case it helps anyone
