Motorola Moto Tag Bluetooth Tracker: 4-Pack $138, 1-Pack $40 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Harvey Norman

101

I've been watching these for a while. Harvey Norman Group are (unfortunately) the only ones who sell these items in Australia.

  • These are the Android version of Airtags. These are the same size as Airtags, so they are able to fit into any of the many accessories that an Airtag can fit into. I see it as an advantage over other trackers.
  • Google have also turned on the Ultra Wideband (UWB) network detection for eligible phones, which a lot of the cheaper tags don't have onboard.
  • Battery life is up to a year with a user replaceable CR2032 battery.
  • IP67 water protection.
  • Frequent firmware updates via app.

Mototag - 1 Pack
RRP Was $55 - Now $40 Save $15

Never lose track of important items again. Just attach a moto tag to your belongings, and use your Android phone to locate anything with pinpoint precision, anywhere in the world.* Moto tag uses Google's Find My Device network of over a billion Android devices worldwide to locate your tag while protecting your privacy.

Here's a Top Tip from u/E5TOQUE

It's worth noting that by default Google's find my settings on android devices are very restrictive, where it will only work in high traffic area's. It is recommended you change your settings to 'With network in all areas' under the 'Find your device' settings option on all Android devices. The more android users that do this, the more accurate the Google find my device network will function. They appear to be far more expensive than other android options.

    • +2

I'll agree with you. They are more expensive but some of the advantages make up for it at this price. They're the same dimension as Airtags, allowing you to attach these to a multitude of things using those accessories,
UWB always you to pinpoint the tag when locating it (none of the cheaper ones have this), you're able to use the tag as a button to find your phone or to activate the camera shutter, also has a seperate app for updating the firmware.

    • From the OP: Google have also turned on the Ultra Wideband (UWB) network detection for eligible phones(en.wikipedia.org), which a lot of the cheaper tags don't have onboard.

I personally have had good success with google find my network tags from aliexpress - tried to paste the direct link to the one i bought, but appears ozB removed the post.

I didnt want to pay $40+ per tracker for a chipolo one point given i wasnt sure how the google find my network would fare, but was willing to try for a $9 tracker, and it works pretty well. battery is replaceable and i had no issues pairing it to my pixel 8a and has worked quite well since i bought it.

the google findHub/find my network allows if you're in range to ring the tag, also has a cold/warmer/hot visual, and can track location when out of your range based on find my network. im pretty happy and have bought a couple more that are on the way

Heres the item number (you can search it direct in aliexpress.com)

Bluetooth GPS Tracker for Android Phones Work With Google Find Hub App Key Finder Pet Smart Tag for Xiaomi Samsung Pixel OnePlus

      • i will add that this particular model (circle/semi circle shape) works better than the other aliexpress google find my tag model that i tried, that other one doesnt ping anywhere as near as often when out of range to me than the original one i posted.

you can get Samsung tags to work with any android phone using the app: uTag https://github.com/KieronQuinn/uTag

      • +1

Yeah saw this on another post here. I did have trouble pairing the new Samsung tag though. Had to pair with Samsung tablet and then could use it on my Pixel phone.

      • +1

Yeah i tried the samsung smartThings / smarttag hack on my pixel and that worked ok, although kind of buggy so i tried using an aliexpress tag thats compatitlbe with the google findHub app, which i prefer

Searched the number but nothing came up

Edit: Google searched it and found it. Bought one, only $2.58? Hope it works!

@Jewdas90: If it's the one that looks like a flat circle and a little piece cut out of it that's the same as mine , hope it goes well for you! My other model which is diamond style kinda works but doesn't ping that well when out of range

I don't like how Samsung just refuse to add their tags to the Google FindMy network. I switche from a Samsung to a Pixel phone. So now I have 2 unused SmartTags sitting in my drawer.

    • +6

They definitely need a better importer than Gerry.

I wouldn't say it's a neg though, because it still is the cheapest price these tags have been at. These do have better support than all the cheaper ones and have other features that the cheaper tags miss out on.

As NotaDeal pointed out you can use the Galaxy Tags with any Android device, but I believe you need a Samsung Device for set up.

Just because something is the cheapest it's been doesn't mean it's a bargain…

I'm still going to argue it's not a deal and that Harvey Norman deserves the neg.

The MotoTag might have a few more features than something like the Kogan Tag, but it still performs worse than the cheaper SmartTag and AirTag from Samsung and Apple.

Edit: 4 pack of Apple AirTags for $105, that's a decent deal.

        • +4

Not really worth mentioning Airtag when they don't work with Android

The Mototag is currently one of very few phone brand tags working with any Android phone, whereas Samsung and Apple are locked to those devices without some mods in apps and setups

Not really worth mentioning Airtag when they don't work with Android

It's worth comparing to AirTag for the same reason we compare the prices of a Samsung Galaxy X or Google Pixel Y to an Apple iPhone Z. I'm not confused about cross compatibility; I'm just discussing value.

            There's quite a few alternatives:

            • Mili - $66 for 4
            • Chipolo
            • Pebblebee
            • JioTag
            • Kogan
            • Countless generic manufacturers

              @BestTechAdvisor: @besttechadvisor

Comparing phones is different as you can at least buy a samsung or apple phone and use it for what it is. I can't buy airtags and use it for what it is designed to do at all with an Android phone

None of those Tag brands are phone brands are they? So doesn't contradict my point at all

              • @markus84:

Comparing phones is different as you can at least buy a samsung or apple phone and use it for what it is. I can't buy airtags and use it for what it is designed to do at all with an Android phone

My point is about the value. They're all used for the same purpose, that's what I'm comparing their prices. Their compatibility is irrelevant to my point.

Even if compatibility were relevant, then your argument works both ways. I can't buy an Apple iPhone and use it for what it is designed to with a MotoTag (or a plethora of other things outside of Apple's closed ecosystem).

None of those Tag brands are phone brands are they? So doesn't contradict my point at all

Whether they're a phone brand or not is irrelevant. You don't want to compare to AirTags because "I can't buy airtags and use it … with an Android phone" then that's still fine by me. There's plenty of working alternatives.

Both of these arguments are moot now that Harvey Norman has sided with my opinion and dropped the price to below that of AirTags…

                • @BestTechAdvisor: Why neg the deal then? Your opinion is just that, and has no value to the deal at all. Imagine if someone with an android phone came and saw the deal and saw your post that 'ApPLe iS CHeaPer' and went and bought airtags and got stuck with a product they can't use? Why even raise a non compatible alternative? You might as well compared it to Garmin watch as they are both 'trackers'

You can't say phone brand is irrelevant when comparing quality, those brands have no valid reference for quality and operation in the market at all

I think you have a niave opinion of yourself if you think you had any relevance on Harvey adjusting their prices

                  • -1

                    @markus84:

                    Why neg the deal then?

Because it was a bad deal, as proven by the fact that Harvey Norman has now knocked off $40.

Your opinion is just that, and has no value to the deal at all.

It's not just my opinion, it's Harvey Norman's as well. They've knocked off $40.

Imagine if someone with an android phone came and saw the deal and saw your post that 'ApPLe iS CHeaPer' and went and bought airtags and got stuck with a product they can't use?

Then they'd be a fool, like if someone went and bought an iPhone expecting it to work with MotoTags after this.

Why even raise a non compatible alternative?

I've already pointed out why: to compare value.

You might as well compared it to Garmin watch as they are both 'trackers'

A watch isn't a bluetooth tracker, stop being facetious.

You can't say phone brand is irrelevant when comparing quality, those brands have no valid reference for quality and operation in the market at all

It is irrelevant. Chipolo and Pebblebee are better known for their trackers than Motorola.

I think you have a niave opinion of yourself if you think you had any relevance on Harvey adjusting their prices

I never said I had any effect on Harvey Norman, if that's what you mean. I said that Harvey Norman has dropped the price of MotoTags below that of AirTags and that they now hold the same opinion as me.

You can argue about whatever semantics you want, but at the end of the day, Gerry's proved me right.

we sell them because JB are too scared to sell button battery products

        • -1

I'd prefer to see them in MobileCiti, DigiDirect, etc.

          • @BestTechAdvisor: whys that? less locations, inconvenient to get stuff from

            • +2

@HardlyNormal: No offence OP, but at least other retailer doesn't owned by Gerry Harvey, the worst enemy of OZbargainers due to his direct role in causing us to be slugged by unnecessary extra tax.

  • I bought these - very difficult to both set up and resolve issues when they unpair.
When they work, they work very well. When they don't (which is often), they're a nightmare to fix.

    • The Samsung or the Motorola?

      • Motorola Moto Tag with a Motorola phone or any Android.

Any decent AliExpress options for Google's Find My Device compatible tags?

I know it's early days for this product in Aus, but more than the apple equivalent? I will wait

One more hint, team. If you're like me and bought these and wondered why you couldn't get precision tracking to work, it's because you don't have access to the latest version of the Moto Tag app in the Play Store. I'm guessing that, as I'm using a Samsung Fold 6, the latest version of the app hasn't been cleared for use on a foldable. But never fear, just download the latest (moto-tag-01-00-073-10-release as of writing) and install it. If you get stuck with an XAPK, download a free XAPK installer. You'll now have access to the latest version of the firmware. UWB will work after this. I can confirm that these are on par with AirTags. Maybe 90% there, which I'm happy with!
