Was looking at a new travel mug to replace my Frank Green which I've had for a few years. A little tired of constantly dismantling to clean and leaking when the lid mechanism is only partially engaged. Received mine yesterday and so far quite happy with it. Many reviews commenting on poor insulation - but I feel they may be reviewing the non-insulated plastic versions instead. Lid appears much easier to clean and I like how the size resembles an actual coffee cup that can fit under my coffee machine group head rather than the super tall Thermos designs often seen. No leaks so far so I'm comfortable throwing this in my bag.

Regarding insulation capabilities - overall not bad at all, on par with my Frank Green stainless steel insulated one and much better than similar plastic or glass reusable cups. All cups started with 250ml of 91˚C water within them, ambient temperature 23˚C (so differences may be even greater in colder environments).

  • Is the inside just stainless steel? Or does it have a nonstick coating?

    • +2

Yep, just stainless steel inside. I've had 2 Frank Greens previously - 1 with just a stainless steel inside, and the second with a ceramic type lining. I never noticed (or tasted) any difference.

      • For long term ceramic is safer.

        • I don't think any coating or lining is safe, especially after they get scratched

  • @Boscom123, is this stainless steel one actually insulated inside? Does it keep your code warm for a long time? I have the plastic ones and they don't keep running warm for too long, feel like the insulation is more about you not burning your hands

    • +4

Two very different items in this listing. If you pick the coloured ones they are poly plastic - just a plastic cup basically. Take it to the cafe as your keep cup and drink it straight away and I'm sure it's fine. The stainless steel one is vacuum insulated (they say in the description…which changes if you select the other options).

I bet many people buy the plastic ones thinking they are insulated. Bit of an issue with Amazon…you click different options and suddenly you have a very different product.

    • +4

Yes the stainless steel ones are insulated. I'm running a quick test right now comparing my Frank Green one to this and will post back with results.

Here's the insulation test I just completed. https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/143600/122380/screensh…

        Wow, a chart, that's hot!
        Thanks for the tests!

        • No worries - hope it helps!

      • +2

That's next level right there. I think you need to start a travel mug review site!

        • Hahah I definitely wouldn't say no to companies giving me items to review!

      • Geeky…love it.

I have this and it's really good. Fits my cup holder which is pretty narrow and has a no nonsense lid making it easy to clean. Just the one part plus gasket. Keeps drinks hot for a while. Tempted to get another!

    • Can the gasket be removed from the lid?
      Is it fragile?

      • +6

Here are some photos if it helps https://imgur.com/a/95DsDhw
Pardon it looking a bit grimey.
There is a kind of gasket in there - almost like a caulk rather than a separate gasket. Seems fused to the plastic lid. I've poked it and it's rubbery. I'm going to say it's not removable or replaceable. I haven't had any spills with it though and I've used it daily for the last 2 years.

  • +1

Is the flip top cover secure? I tend to just chuck my travel cup in my bag and worry that the cover might come loose if it runs against my other stuff in the bag.

    • +2

I haven't had it long enough to give you a definitive answer. But so far I'm reasonably confident with how secure the lid is. I'm finding that I'm needing both hands to flip the cover off given the effort required.

    • How badly would it ruin your day if it does? Coffee in your bag, on your back, and on your pants. Wouldn't risk it.

That's what having a bag with dual bottleholders is for.

  • +2

Ceramic with glazed coating is best surface for coffee stain and odour resistant. Followed by a glass. I'd never use stainless steel for tea or coffee.

    • +2

What is wrong with using stainless steel for tea or coffee?

      • -2

Nothing, if you are happy for your mug to have a 'sticky' coffee odour even after several wash.

    • It's an interesting thought. Having tried both (different Frank Green versions) I can't say I've noticed any difference between them in terms of odour or taste.

  • Does it fit in a standard car cup holder

    • Yes, fits in both my car's cupholder as well as my partner's.

  • +2

    Small one sold out?

    • Blue/green versions still available for $14

      • -1

        Not stainless steel.

        • -4

          Yeah, so what ?
This was their question "Small one sold out?"
Technically, the answer is just Yes, but that's just being pedantically accurate and not very helpful, if they happened to be in the market for a travel cup.

Where is it said that it had to be stainless steel ? They can see it's not the stainless steel version by my response of 'Blue/green versions', and their criteria was the size.
Did this fly over your head somehow, or are you just being contentious because you're bored ?

If anyone missed out on this one, don’t worry. I’ve been using the Avanti gocup for a long time and I’m really happy with it. It’s much safer and doesn’t leak at all. I’ve had mine for 5 years, and even my whole family started using it too. Plus, even the discounted price of the kit that sold still seems too expensive to me.

Just sharing my experience in case it’s helpful for anyone looking for an alternative.

    • The lid disassembly necessary for cleaning on the Avanti is a no go for me….

  • My Stainless cup arrived today, I dont rate it all, its terrible it keeps splashing me in the face and just feels awkward to drink out of

    • Sucks to hear.

I just want a therns screw on cup that is safe to toss in my bag. Something that isn't like the big Thermos screw on.

    • +1

I actually also find it really awkward to drink from using the lid. I think my mouth tends to cover the air hole so it limits what actually comes out.

      • Yep, I can but I'd rather open it up!
