      Much Moore is 10-12% (ingredients list says minimum 10%, photo says 12%), so technically "Much Less"

          milk fat. Needs 10% milk fat to classed as "ice cream" in AU, otherwise it's a frozen dessert… or gelato. or sorbet.

              @sourdawg: So, technically, Bulla is not selling "Boysenberry ice cream", they are selling "Fresh Vanilla Ice cream with boysenberry sauce (9%)"

              if the sauce is 9% then the milk cream % will be over 10.

              The package claim on the ingredients is 18%:

              FRESH MILK, FRESH CREAM (MILK) (18%), SUGAR, WATER, MALTODEXTRIN, MILK SOLIDS, BOYSENBERRIES (1.5%), THICKENERS (PECTIN, XANTHAN GUM, GUAR GUM, CARRAGEENAN), EMULSIFIER (471), ACIDITY REGULATORS (331, CITRIC ACID), FLAVOUR, MINERAL SALT (509), PURPLE CARROT JUICE, BLACKCURRANT JUICE, COLOUR (ANNATTO).

              But 18% milk cream doesn't really equate to 18% milk fat. Lots of marketing at play here.

                @Dex: Yep I'm aware of all that and I know that much Moore has a higher amount of milk fat, hence asking twig what the 20% was in reference to

                  The vanilla one is 20%.

                  This is why marketing works. Someone saw "fresh cream (milk) 20%)" and assumed it meant the product was 20% milk fat, so goes around telling people that Bulla is 20% milk fat.

                  It's why a girl I dated in university told me that a bag of Allen's snakes were healthy because the label said 0% fat.

                    • @Dr Phil: if the product contains 20% milk cream and milk cream is ~36% milk fat, that gives you ~7.5% milk fat in the finished product. They then bolster that with milk to over 10% in order to meet the legal definition of "ice cream"

      Oh yeah this is high end ice-cream. I usually buy 3 when half price to keep me going until next half price week. Caramel is best.

      • It's got the minimum amount of milk fat to classify as icecream instead of "frozen dessert". It's very low end. Even the Coles brand premium ice cream is better quality - 14% milk fat vs 10% - makes it 40% creamier in texture.

        The smaller Woolworths stores - the totally useless ones they call "METRO" only stock Bulla.

        You can only get MUCH MOORE Ice Cream at the big Woolworths branded stores
        Just like 90% of stuff the Woolworths sells

        So I will stick with Bulla Creamy Classics because the 3 nearest Woolworths stores are all Metro…bah ha!

        Oh its like that now? i rember from maybe 10 years it was consistently $5 for a 2L bucket normal price compared to like $10 at coles

    Everyday price in NZ is $5.99 -$6.50 it's gone up from $4.50 when I was their 11 month ago but WW half price bs again is a joke .

    • That's because it's made in NZ and is a NZ company. Of course it's going to cost more over here. Ice cream in general is usually much cheaper over there. Everything, not so much.

  • I love Salted Caramel but this was a huge disappointment. It was basically average vanilla ice-cream with a tiny hint of artificial flavouring. This is half the price of Connoisseur (when on sale like $6 right now at WW), and has about 2% of the flavour of the Connoisseur - seriously not worth it.

    Agree with other comments. Calling this "premium" ice cream is an insult to the English language, even allowing for the usual marketing hype. A very mediocre product imo.

    • FYI, 'Premium' is a Latin word, and English is a totally compiled Germanic language. So, it would be a mediocre (also a Latin word) insult to the compiled English language!

      • The 'premium' I was referring to was the English marketing word on the label of this product which has obvious connotations, but thanks for the highly genersalised language lesson. Etymology's both a complex and often highly disputed topic so I'm not sure I agree with your opinion that English is "a totally compiled Germanic language". To be fair I'm not even sure I understand exactly what you're suggesting with the words "totally compiled".

        Language is of course (ahem) Much More than words, which - not rarely - have many different roots. Many English words have also changed meaning regularly over the centuries and were/are not even consistent in meaning across the English "speaking" world, as "Brits", "Aussies" and "Yanks" know very well.

    • I've heard the phrase "Premium Mediocre" to describe the pricier goods you get at a supermarket that are a step up over the cheap brands and heavily advertise themselves on the basis of being high quality, usually with exaggerated package designs and pictures of artisinal chefs on the packaging. Think Lindt or Connoisseur. They are better than the cheaper brands, yet still not exactly truly "premium" - because the actual top tier stuff usually isn't sold at supermarkets or if it is its even more expensive.

      I'm not sure I would even classify the Much Moore brand as being Premium Mediocre under that definition. I won't turn my nose up at it for a decent sale price. It's a decent cheap ice cream from the ones I tried but you're not going to get your mind blown.

        I've tried "Premium" MM and won't buy again but tastes vary widely and kids (esp) probably care less about the fat content/mouth feel so this would no doubt appeal as a family tub.

    Do not purchase frozen treats that look like icecream on the labels / packaging.

    Check the ingredients if the primary ingredient is water. The example brand Norco 2L tubs has been taken away from Coles. As its primary ingredient was water. Not the minecraft ones.

    Probably tastes of burnt watery milk powder

    Sad to say Connoissuer is not that good. Had one last week and tasted powdery, yup skim milk concentrate or solids is equals milk powder.

    Thus the only decent ice cream on the supermarket shelves are Bulla and Much Moore. Do stock up when on sale.

      So how do you tell?

      Eg Peter's lactose free vanilla:

      Water, Cream (26%), Milk Solids, Glucose Syrup, Sugar, Vegetable Origin Emulsifiers (477, 471 (Soy)), Enzyme (Lactase), Vegetable Gum (412), Flavours, Colour (160b).

        It'll say ice cream on the package if it's ice cream.

        If it doesn't have the words "ice cream" on the front, chances are it's sugar, water, and vegetable oil.

        Norco got a bit cheeky because they had "Norco Ice Creamery Vanilla" on the front, and had a brand story on the side/back about making ice cream for 300 years, or whatever. Doesn't actually say it's ice cream in the container.

        Beware of Coles and Woolworths product titles containing the word ice cream. They're not meant to, but they do.

        Specialised dietary products like lactose free, vegan, etc. will struggle to maintain real milk solids (for obvious reasons)

      Definetely agree however Connoissuer is definetely the best quality you'll get at woolies. They have significantly less overrun than the Bulla and Much Moore brands you mentioned.
      If you want evidence, serving size for Much Moore is 53g/100ml. Bulla vanilla is actually only 46g per 100ml.
      Connoissuer is a whopping double that at 96g/100ml.

      What that means is that a 1L tub of Connoissuer actually weighs more than a 2L tub of Bullla haha. You are literally paying for air whipped in the other two. Don't just look at the % of fat, look at the grams per serving and you'll soon see that the more premium brands actually have more cream and not air!

      Connoisseur isn't the be all of icecream, but I encourage you to weigh a 1L tub of each brand. You'll find bulla and much are significantly lighter. They all contain the bare minimum of milk fat to classify as icecream at 10%, but the other two brands whip as much air as possible into their icecream to make a litre weight a little as possible. Looking at the servicing sizes suggest bulla weighs about half as much as connoisseur.

      I actually think the best budget brand is the Coles premium, which has 40% more milk fat than the other brands and consequently stays creamier after opening, instead of the other brands which are really hard to get a spoon through after the lid's been off.

  • I have tried the Boysenberry in this brand and I found it was very nice. It goes really well in a waffle cone and I also put a teaspoon of Nutella in the bottom of the cone, which makes for a very tasty chocolate finish👍

    Kapiti from Aldi is best. Made in NZ.

    • Kapiti one of my favourites, along with the expensive bulla icecream in the 1l tubs.

    • Have been chasing the best (reasonably-priced) vanilla ice cream for a while now. Was disappointed with the Kapiti's too subtle vanilla flavour given its NZ awards and price. Long time since I've tried it but Sara Lee French Vanilla used to be okay (as was the ultra chocolate) - esp when the 1L tubs were reasonably priced.

      One vanilla I tried after reading some taste tests is the 1L Coles Irresistible Vanilla Bean, always $6.50. Again not enough vanilla for my taste but meets my flavour/price criteria better than Kapiti.

      • As long as it contains natural vanilla beans/flecks and not extract. Which the Kapiti does and appears the Coles one does as well.
