Workzone Tap Re-Seating Tool $9.99 @ Aldi

260

Aldi has a tap reseating tool on special buys this week. Looks like the one I saw at Bunnings. They have really good value washers to go with. If you're ever changing the washers on your taps, it'll seal the deal if you reseat the tap too.

Bunnings is price matching Aldi on this one.

Its something most people rarely / never use

Just ask older neighbours & friends to borrow theirs. Worked for me. Was given 1 to keep

Reseating quickly fixed a dripping tap when all types of drip fixing washers failed.

dont push hard - but this is the best tool ever…. https://www.bunnings.com.au/hydroseal-12mm-tap-seat-refacing…
super smooth finish with the drill in 15seconds.

the first few times you use it - only spin the drill for like a second or two and then take the tool out and check..

the last few spins at almost zero pressure and you get a mirror finish…..

      I second this.
If you need one, spend the extra $25 and save time and your hands.

Yes. In fact, save $10 because you will buy this one to fix the mess you'll make of the seat with the other. Once done, also use the Hydroseal washers (I'm not associated with them, honest - I tried a whole bunch and settled on HS years ago), and tell the kids to turn the taps off no more than 1/4 turn past where the water flow stops.

    • From the hydroseal description o.O:

The tool is designed to be driven using a cordless drill or variable speed electric drill on a low speed.

Even better than this (or possibly in addition to this) - replacing the tap spindles with quarter or half turn spindles. I got fed up with a combination of crappy tap washers and kids with the strength and finesse of gorillas. Washers would last less than a year and the increasing force used for a good seal would mar the seat. I swapped a set of shower taps to the half turn spindles available in Bunnings and they're really good. I'm now going to swap all other non-cartridge style taps to those when their washers next need replaced.

    • That's what we did. Soooo much better!

    • Any brand recommendation?

      • Bunnings only do one I think and there's a link someone else kindly posted below.

That's the one. I went half turn but my next lot will be quarter turn as there should more than enough control with that range. My original concern was having enough fine control and it turned out it was not warranted.

        • thanks got a set of 1/4 yesterday easy job

the real ozbargain way is to take the old washer and glue some 600 grit sand paper to the plastic part and polish it by hand.

      Been there, not proud

      • Well that's the desired result, nice and flush 😏

Grabbed a hydroseal one last year, super underrated tool, solves the root cause of older faucets instead of throwing more tap valves at the problem.

Great deal. Very handy tool. Last time I needed one, most Bunnings stores were out

  • What about cutting off the T handle and attaching it to a drill? Any issues there?

    • +1

I reckon the seat would be gone in no time. They are very rough cutters.

      • I see. The one linked above which attaches to a drill must have a better cutting surface designed for drill applications then.

        • Yes, it's strange they don't include a finer cutter or a polisher. Weird choice just having two rough cutters.

    • I'd just use hand power for this job. My (o.O) in above comment means wtf?! Do not use a drill even if the hydroseal desxription says you can unless you actually know what you're doing..

    Jimmy crickets!

We just use Dad's 3/4" socket that fits inside with 1-2mm spare each side, then with a rubber mallet if the tap seals would not seat properly. Then you think is it upside down, too late. We had fun, until we got told we were naughty for incorrect use of the socket set.

Never even knew this was a thing. I get the feeling that for $10 this is something I should have stashed away so in 5 years when I need one I can't find it but refuse to buy another.

I used one yesterday to fix a corroded seat. Very rough finish that would shred a washer, and I had to use my Dremel to smooth the seat. I haven't tried replacement tap seats, but I'd seriously consider them over a reseater. Plus you don't have to flush out tiny brass filings afterwards. My reseater left heaps of filings inside the tap.
