I wasn't aware we now measure PC's in litres.

    45 litres must be good.

    • +3

HP has done it for years, it's the model name they give the Omen PCs

    • +5

Think positive. Google told me that 45L equates to 95.1019 Pints. That's quite a lot of beer :)

      • +3

Don't be stupid. Why put beer in a PC case when you can put vodka?

  • +2

My apologies, do people really buy these??

    • +16

It says 12 sold. So yeah.

      • +1

Ah! But maybe these aren't people? Maybe they're lawyers or politicians?

    • +1

      Gaming PCs?

      • +2

I think he’s specifically referring to 6 thousand dollar gaming PCs.

        • Fair.

People spend far more than that on gaming PCs.

          • @wizza13: Probably even far more within games.

    • -3

If I was a prebuilt buyer, I'd be buying these over the random builders for the warranty alone.

Businesses will also buy OEM builds rather than custom builds.

      • +5

Random builders also have warranty. I know some OEM parts are locked. For example Alienware Ryzen CPUs, cannot be used with customs, and vice versa.

Overall these PCs don't seem designed for upgradability.

        • Which is a shame, because $6795 just isn't enough to spend on my 3x3 Minesweeper PC :P

    • If someone can afford a BMW/Mercedes, they can afford this.

      • -5

BMW/Mercedes isn’t indicator of smart wealth anymore. Tesla is.

Smart wealth own home with solar panels and battery - charge Tesla for free, charge all appliances for free, charge air conditioner for free, warm swimming pool and hot water system for free and finally claim remaining living expenses and toys, including $6000 gaming rig and Apple Pro - needed or not, as work expense.

Smart wealth are more frugal than those on poverty line and are tax poor. BMW/Mercedes is for wannabe smart wealth.

        • +2

The most expensive Tesla for sale in Australia is under 100k.

There are electric cars from BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, and many other luxury brands that run way more than that.

Tesla is not a luxury brand, and it's not "the indicator of smart wealth".

        • Dunno if Tesla is the example they seem like the most “keeping up with the joneses” ass car out there

        • -1

Tesla's are shit made American cars, with fancy lights. And with a Schizo CEO

        • Lol no

    • Why pretend to be sorry?

    • I built my own 3 years back and end up costing $5k but its mainly a photo editing workstation and sometimes gaming pc ;)

    • There is a few guys in OzB that bought $6.5k 5090 cards at release. It happens.

  • -5

I think it is a good deal if you need a 5090. Indie pre builders cut corner too much to fit 5090 in a $4999 deal. It is like all the rest are utter rubbish.

    • +5

When a 5090 cost at least $4500, how are you expecting pre builders to not cut corners for a 5k prebuild deal? 9800x3d cost at least $800 or ultra 7 265k is $500+, those 2 alone is already more than 5k.

    • +4

The ebay listing doesn't have what brands they use other than the RAM.

How do you know HP isn't cutting corners as well?

      • +1

        SSDs are western digital

        • -1

It doesn't list it in the EBay page though.

I would have to take your word for it that they use WD SSDs (and no specific model was mentioned either)

          • +1

@alitadark: I took mine apart to check, from memory they are the Western Digital SN5000S 2TB
Edit: Crystal Disk Info says SN5000S*

      • -2

I will not explain why the hp desktop is better. I have hp 4090 pre build and I know what brands in it. One ram died after 6 months, I called hp and they sent me a new one, it is all good since.

EDIT: new one means new desktop

        • +2

Do you need to return the old desktop?

        • I could also send you multiple online/youtube reviews for prebuilds from HP/Alienware/Dell/etc, and showcase all the issues they have, sure its not this exact model, but you make it sound like these companies give you better value for money when often that's not the case.

Furthermore, you could always choose to build a PC yourself if you worry so much about what brands are being used, and it's not like independent pre builders are not telling you the exact brand and model they're using for their builds (except TechFast)

  • Welcome to 1985

  • +7

    Lol overpriced crap

    • Huh, this seems more like overpriced awesomeness. What about this is crap? The only potential concern I can see is upgradability.

  • +1

is the Ultra 9 285K worth the $800 difference?

    • For gaming, no. For productivity like rendering, probably.

  • -1

and also why does HP use Intel Ultra CPU instead of AMD? I know the 13th and 14th series have some issue.

    • +3

These are the Core Ultra ones, which don't have the 13-14th gen chip issue

  • Can someone explain to me how a 5090 can fit in a laptop when a desktop version is the something like 30cm x 14cm big??

    • +9

      Because it isn't a real 5090, it is a marketing 5090.

    • +4

The GPU in laptops is usually a "mobile" version which is less powerful than the desktop version. Sometimes the difference is small, sometimes it's large.

In the case of the 5090, the laptop version has roughly half the cores of the desktop 5090 and runs at roughly half the clock speed, with performance in the realm of a last-gen desktop RTX 4070.

      • +1

Not to mention the cut down tdp and throttling.

        • There is no throttling if the chasis has good cooling, there are power limits however. TBH they can push the GPU to 220w easy but Nvidia being arses won't give us it. Run CPU at 80w and GPU at 220w and most larger laptops will cool it just fine.

Right now my Legion 7i combined will push over 300w, intel U9 275HX can use upto 210w alone. At around 300w total the GPU @175w still only hits 67 deg but the CPU gets too toasty at almost 100 deg. If I cap CPU to 80w it won't get above 80 deg.

    • The RTX 4090 mobile is actually a thermally throttled RTX 4080. The die they used is for 4080 not 4090.

  • +4

Have the 285k/5090 one from a previous deal and confirm the build quality is great, 1200w platinum psu (not modular though), case is fantastic, SSD is western digital QLC, AIO is your standard asetek 360mm with a customizable LCD screen, one weak point is the motherboard, it’s not really good for overclocking, RAM is Hynix A die Kingston so pretty good. 5090 is really quiet and temps are low

    • are there any more sata port that I can add more sata hdd and sad drive?

      • From the looks of this thread, plenty of people think there is lots of room for sad hard drives

      • the motherboard has 2 sata ports, they include 1 cable. Both SSD ports are filled by the 2TB + 2TB. A third m2 slot is used for the wifi card.

        • thanks the motherboard only has 2 sata ports. my 10 years old one has much more sata ports

          • @RichardF89: Very unfortunate, you can even see spots on the motherboard they decided not to include like usb c connector head

          • @RichardF89: desktop MB has been moving away from sata for years now. If you really need it you can always get sata expansion cards.

Alternative is to just use network storage over 2.5gb or 5gb ethernet. It will get pretty close to having sata hdd in the pc. But yes, it is added cost.

    • is there space to add an nvme 2230 ssd?

  • +4

Serious question. Who is spending $6k on a desktop in this climate?

    • And what games are people enjoying I wonder…

      • +1

        minecraft

    • True, it is winter and leaving your PC on all night is not the most efficient heating option.

      • Seems pretty efficient if you're in-game

    • Some people spend more than $10k for handbag, with this at least you can game and keep yourself warm in winter.

    • +1

People who aren’t experiencing financial hardship and have plenty of expendable income.

  • +1

If the demand is there, the supply will come. I paid about $1600 in 2012 for a gaming laptop which still works as normal to date. The games these days demand powerful machines, hope they last that long.

  • Code is no longer working now. Was yesterday - weird. HPJN20
