One of OzBargain's favourite NAS drives is back on sale and a tad cheaper than recent deals for those who missed out last time. The Ryzen 7 5825U variant with two M.2 NVMe and RAM slots can be had for US$317.06 (~A$483.91) with the coupons AUOZ30 and HW1PBRH4QXZU

This one uses the Intel N150 4c/4t CPU that's perfect for Plex and Jellyfin transcoding and features 4 3.5/2.5" SATA Bays with a single M.2 NVMe SSD slot, dual 2.5GbE LAN ports and a single DDR4-3200 SODIMM RAM slot for up to 32GB of storage. Additionally the M.2 WiFi slot can be turned into an SSD using an M.2 key to M.2 NVMe adapter that should be included with the NAS. isn't included.

Other features include HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort, full feature USB-C port including video out, 2x USB 3.2, 2x USB 2.0, DP, HDMI, USB-C, MicroSD card slot, 3.5mm audio jack and the DC port. On the rear there is a large 120mm fan (4 pin, replaceable) to keep the system cool.

While barebones it still comes with Windows 11 Pro and you can install any other operating systems like Proxmox, Arc Loader (Xpenology) and more. It's also good for Home Assistant, OPNsense, multiple VMs, Docker and more. Since this is using an ASMedia ASM1064 controller for drives, TrueNAS isn't recommend due to compatibility issues.

  • I see this can be used as a plex server, however if I have high quality 4k dolby rips (60gbs), will it be able to transcode fast enough?
My current setup with an old work HP G5 laptop doesn't have enough horsepower to keep up.

    • +1

less about res and more about transcoding codec, h264/avc will be fine. HEVC/AV1 will likely be problematic on these though

      • They do h265 well. Some AV1 transcodes i have had an issue with but depends on the client too.

  • +1

Don't need it but for $360 hard to pass up a cheap TrueNAS, will be a good weekend tinker project

    • +1

      TrueNAS or unRaid?

      • This one will be TrueNAS, Need 6-8 bays for my Unraid which is currently in the Fractal Design R5 with a i5-12400

    • Got ram for it?

  • The code AUOZ20 has run out. Showing up as $262.84USD for me (~$390). Still worth it?

    • +2

AUCD20 worked for me just now.

  • Is this good for both plex and scrypted?

    • Did you read the OP?

  • ugh I caved..

I'll be moving my offsite backup unraid box into this little unit. A big size difference coming from a mid-size tower though.

  • "Sorry, the coupon code you entered is based on a first come first served basis and has been used up by other shoppers. Please enter a different coupon code or explore other discounts on AliExpress." ???

  • Anyone got an idea about the repairability of these things?

Specs and form factor are great but I can't help but worry about replacing parts if they fail.

It's pretty typical for these tiny turnkey NAS units to have a a non-standard components (understandable given the form factor), so if something on the mainboard dies you couldn't just replace it with anything. I can't find a good clear teardown and didn't have much luck searching for a replacement board on AliExpress.

Even if there's a board available from AOOSTAR now… what about in 5 years? I guess maybe at this price you can justify just getting a new unit.

I'm thinking maybe I'll just compromise on chassis footprint and build something with ATX parts.

    • I had the same concerns as you get no Warranty. If you get 5 years out of any IT gear you're doing ok

Just have a backup plan in case thing go pear shaped

    • I think the party's over. But it's been on special several times in recent months so will probably return.

      • Generally AliExpress adds 10% as tax always, right?

        • Yes, per Aust govt rules. Is the price you are citing with the coupons already applied?

        • Often they add more than 10%

China Box requested an addition 50 ush for dhl to deliver.
Complained to Ali and said my previous one has definitely been sent.
    Now Chinabox blacklisted my account.
Pretty dodgy seller if you ask me.

    • +1

Yep, they tried to squeeze me and others for extra delivery last time this came up too.

      • It's a joke, it says free delivery, so they own that expense lol.

        • They tried the $50USD cash grab with me too as I'm "regional" but instead had it delivered to my brother in law in the city

          • @imthebojo: They told me they wanted extra for 'any postcode beginning with 6'. πŸ™ƒ

  • Anyone with one of these able to provide info on the power consumption? Alas my HP n36 power supply died (too expensive to be worth replacing) and I just looked at my new server and figured its costing about $140pa to run (about 60w average). So I am starting to get miserly and look at how much a device costs to run.

  • +1

I ordered a Ryzen version last time and it arrived very quickly. Works great with TrueNAS.

It didn't come with the M.2 Key adapter though, so I had to purchase it separately.

  • Experts,
    Does it use DDR5?

What brand and size of RAM and SSD should I use?

What is the noise level of 7200RPM HDD? How is noise level for this unit in general?

    • DDR4

Got this for about $76 on Azn

"This coupon code can't be used in combination with other discounts"
HW1PBRH4QXZU now only provides $2 off, and seems like other coupon codes are no longer working for just this item, even by itself via buy now button (Codes work fine on other items in cart). Browser and App.
Very odd, I had this NAS in checkout with the discounts applied not 30 mins ago, was just researching RAM options before pulling the trigger… Guess I'll wait till next time!

    • +1

I got caught with the same, thought i'd just missed out. I've refreshed now and it's back down to the lower price and the code works again so i've bought one to update my old N40L.

      • Yea, I checked 30 mins ago and it updated again to a tad lower price. Very odd.

    • +1

      Same error again now.

Wait for next one as well then.

  • When you say "comes with windows 11 pro", given its bare bones, I assume this means the MOBO is tied to a Win licence?

    • They are likely referring to the options that include a ssd

  • I see lots of comments saying the drive controller is not suitable for ZFS in TrueNAS. Is there anything else in this price point that would actually be recommended?

    • Go for the Ryzen model. Considerably better performance also.

      • But that doesn't change the SATA controller?

        • Have a quick Google about where the SATA controller is and I think you'll find it is either the chipset or CPU, and both are different on the Ryzen to the Intel.

          • @buffalo bill: Good point. Guess I'll be waiting for the next good Ryzen model deal

  • I'd consider it if I ever get Plex to work properly

After Plex, you csn look into Sonarr, Radarr, Bazarr

      • +1

And watchlistarr. Great addition. Put things on watchlist on Plex and it downloads the tv show or movie. Even upcoming ones when available it ads it. Also works for friends using your plex.

  • AUCD20 expired? I'm getting "This coupon code can't be used in combination with other discounts"

    • nice, I was literally just about to search for 3D printed mods

  • Is there a video that shows how to set one of these up from beginning to end? Something noob friendly. Would like to be able to download something and just watch it without having to unrar, transfer to external hd, plug hd into laptop connected to tv …

    • You will need to add least flash installer to USB drive.

      Plenty of guides online.

    • Guide wise I'd start by doing your homework on OS. You have choices:

      Unraid (limited free licensing)
      Truenas
      Truenas scale
      Casa OS
      Hex os(paid solution)

I'd say start looking for videos comparing these and pick one. Once you pick one find another video on how to set up that system. All of them need another lc to flash a usb media then plugging this in to a monitor for a few minutes to step through the wizard. Once that's done you can run it headless pretty much indefinitely and use the browser on another machine.

      • +1

Since this is using an ASMedia ASM1064 controller for drives, TrueNAS isn't recommend due to compatibility issues.

        • Is there a source for more information on this? I've been seriously considering one for hex os which is based on truenas and this is the first I'd heard of it.

          • +1

            @Everettpsycho: https://www.reddit.com/r/truenas/comments/1hm7ftm/n100_wtr_p…

I think the biggest issue here is the ASM SATA controller. Doesn't matter if TrueNAS is running baremetal or in a VM in Proxmox. Tons of posts in this sub with people losing data or having issues with read/writing. It doesnt seem to be an issue in the Unraid community though which is weird, cuz everybody is connecting ASM to ZFS issues and Unraid uses ZFS protocol as well..

There are other threads about the ASM1064 in there

    • +1

Is there a video that shows how to set one of these up from beginning to end?

Not really as these have no OS so the setup will depend on what you want to install

      Something noob friendly.

Synology NAS are good for that

      • Arc Loader (Xpenology)

        • Which probably isn't

          Something noob friendly.

    • +1

I use unRaid. Not free but quite user-friendly.
Buy licence. Build USB stick with licence attached to USB. Put in hdd in this nas. Boot up and go through steps to setup. Fait bit of videos of that if you search. Good thing is you can add drives after or upgrade drives. I got a parity drive (meaning if a drive fails it's backed up, put a new disk in and it rebuilds it). Lot of dockers (programs that runs on it, example PLEX for movies, different *are example Sonarr, radar, (that downloads series movies) home bridge for apple smart home, . I got plex years and years back when it was fairly cheap. I haven't touched Synology side of it but think that is a free software you put on.

If I were you, look into what you want from it. Example just movies/series. Want to use it as backup your computer, phone. Almost like saying I got a computer, what software should I install. It depends on what your needs. Just Google what can I use a NAS for. What can I do with Synology. I want to build a media machine. Those searches and you get an idea. Disks/drives aren't cheap. I have gone with Eastern refurbished. Just look on search bar on ozbargain.

      • Will be putting TrueNAS on this but I also have an Unraid Lifetime licence for $249usd which is $$$ but it’s so easy to mix drives and install docker containers
