    65" is cheaper than the 55" !

  • I bought a 55in TCL tv for about $1k in 2020. It's been criminally slow and buggy since the day I bought it (takes a full minute to turn on). Anyone know if the software or processing power has improved?

Get a chromecast or firestick and you are good to go.

    • If yours is an android tv, try going in the settings and turn on the "quick start". See if that improves the turning on/lag time. You need to go to settings> system> power and energy > quick start. Activate the quick start.

    • which model?

Have you ever updated the firmware? TCL doesn't officially supply them via the network update or their website but you can get them through a Telegram group. I’ve got a C855 which I've just updated the firmware on tonight after finding this out and it's noticeably improved the responsiveness of the TV.

I bought the TV earlier this year and it was still on firmware from 2 years ago. There's been about 10 or so updates in that time, so it's likely there's been updates to yours, whichever model you have.

I don't find the interface to be comparable to something like an AppleTV etc., but it's not terrible either. You can't argue with the picture quality for the price of the TVs.

      • Ah so that's what's going on with the lack of updates?

Have had my c845 for 2 years and always thought it was a bit strange that there were consistently 'No updates available' for a recent + mid-range model. Bizarre that they leave you to work it out through a private group rather than making available for download on their website at the very least…

Yeah, it's quite annoying really. Going by what I've seen on forums etc. they also don't "officially" supply the firmware updates to customers either so if a firmware update bricks your TV, then you might be on your own warranty wise. I was a bit hesitant to update mine based on this, but I went ahead with it anyway and haven't had an issue. The TV is noticeably more responsive in the menus etc. the interface has been updated a bit and there are extra preset picture modes added such as IMAX for HDR and Filmmaker Mode.

The firmware my TV was on was 135, the latest is 531 with 11 other updates in between that. I believe the firmware for the C845 and C855 is the same so you'd likely be in the same boat. I wasn't able to update straight to 531 though so based on advice in the Telegram group I updated to 420 then I think 503 then 531.

I found my TV would regularly drop WiFi when it started up but since updating the firmware I haven't seen it do it, so fingers crossed it's fixed that.

I'd recommend joining the group if you want to have a look: t.me/tclupdates
There's also a bot to give you links to download the firmware based on your chipset: @FirmwareTCLbot

          • @TheWiz: Yeah sounds like its worth the risk and that there's a decent track record of updates going successfully anyway. Imagine at some point it becomes somewhat necessary if planning on keeping the tv for a decent length of time.

Thanks heaps really appreciate all the info here, will join that group.

$991 with this code “JUL2025” @Powerland ebay store + free delivery
    https://ebay.us/m/moNDDj
    Only 4 available though

  • Cheaper on ebay…

    • Except ebay seller can just ignore your warranty request and neither ebay nor paypay will do anything about it, they just don't enforce manufacturer warranties beyond the 30-day period

  • Are these better than the 755 from last year?

  • I don't know about these ones, but be careful, some TCL TVs won't do their max refresh rate at their max resolution. So if you want 4k AT 144hz, just triple check that it'll do that. (I know, I know, melt my graphics card etc…).
