That card is already good for 4k
"dont buy a 40 series, the 50 series is around the corner"
"dont buy a 50 series, wait for them to come down in price"
"50 series prices are dropping, but dont buy, the supers are around the corner"
"supers are here, but theyre too expensive"
"dont buy a 50 series super, the 60 series is around the corner"
Rinse and repeat.
if you need a GPU, just buy one. If you dont, keep waiting.
This pattern has been around forever.
"Don't buy a Voodoo, the Voodoo 2 is around the corner"
"Don't buy a Voodoo 3, the TNT2 Ultra is better"
etc… only difference is that PCs became obsolete after 6-12 months back then 😅
the HODLers from 3080 mining era probably still using 1080 Ti and waiting for 80 series price to drop to $800 like in the olden days.
To be fair, the 1080 Ti was definitely a cracker of a deal back in the day when it was released in 2017, however, worth remembering that the AUD/USD exchange rate was $0.77 back then, and today it is $0.66, and inflation means that $1 back in 2017 is around $1.30 today.
I went back to June 2017 to try and dig something up from the old PARTS.pdf from MSY (see: https://web.archive.org/web/20170606110454/http://www.msy.co…), and the cheapest 1080 Ti was basically $1,200.
Adjusting for purchasing power parity gives $1,200 * 0.77 / 0.66 = $1,400, and adjusting for inflation gives $1,400 * 1.30 = $1,820. Due to the decline in purchasing power of the AUD (both due to inflation, and relative to the USD), the 1080 Ti is actually far more expensive than we "remember".
However, it's worth noting that the 1080 Ti was a top-class card, whereas the 5080 is not. The 1080 Ti was like a slightly cut back Titan Xp (both on the GP102 core), and the 1070, 1070 Ti and 1080 being on the GP104 core. Today, the 5090 is on the GB202 core, and the 5070 Ti and 5080 are on the GB203 core.
Arguably, due to the way the VRAM is spec'd today, it's like the 5090 is the modern Titan Xp, and the 5080 is the modern 1080, the "1080 Ti class" card has not really existed for the 40-series and 50-series (though the 3080 Ti is similar, being a cut-down 3090 with less VRAM, similar to the relationship between the 1080 Ti and Titan Xp).
@FujinShu: Sort of, the original intent of the Titan was to have a compute card that had much better FP64 performance, e.g. the original Titan vs. the 780 Ti.
Over time, this feature got taken away as compute shifted more from FP64 to FP16 (i.e. Tensor core) performance, such that the only difference between the RTX Titan and 2080 Ti was VRAM and shaders.
So NVIDIA did the common sense thing and just called the "Titan" equivalent the 3090 in the next generation.
2x Voodoo2 card in sli = quake2 king
also future-proof
by the time 5080 Super comes out, the 5080 stock are all gone. same thing happened with 4080 and 4080 super.
Yep - i saw a news article where they were already cutting supply to keep prices above MSRP
https://wccftech.com/nvidia-rtx-50-supply-expected-to-fall-b…
It’s kinda hard to cut supply, they’re probably just reallocating more of their GPUs to their higher margin RTX Pro cards that they can charge 10x for per GPU to workstation users and enterprises that don’t care for money and only want maximum time savings.
I need one but cant afford so waiting is the only option. Also hodl or not, not paying ngreedia beacuse this whole cycle has started due to their greed.
wait for 6000 series.
Currently running on my newly bought 7800X3D (from recent Ali deals) on my 3080 10gb and still running fine on 1440p on most games. So I'll wait.
I was in same boat but i pulled the trigger on this one along with a 9800x3d from aliexpress
What did the 9800X3D bring you over the 7800X3D?
Warm fuzzies
Bragging rights, e-peen
Just wanted the extra grunt and future proof as i wont be upgrading for another 6-7 years, i play a lot of CS2 which is cpu dependant so wanted the extra FPS.
thanks for keeping us updated
I've got the same rig and I'll only be using a 1080p monitor next year. I think I'm good for a while.
Clearing out stock for the supers?
Supers will have more vram which would be good for 4k. Might be worth waiting a while for it to launch (and then a little while more for prices to come down). Or buy this on a deeper clearance sale.
