Very good price if you want this game

  • Played the first. How is this game? Same mechanics?

    • +2

Played and loved both. Second one feels like an upgrade over the first. Same gameplay and mechanics mostly. Highly recommend.

      • Cool, thanks!

I like the gameplay. Just that the story feels kinda meh, I only really liked 2 character's story. Which kinda sucks cause you need to play the game multiple time.

        • +1

I liked the story more this time actually. The characters intertwine better.

    • Start playing Osvald from the start. Fantastic story from the start and in my opinion the best story to start.

      The other would be Cassity

      Amazing, amazing story.

  • +1

Can anyone tell me how it performs on Switch 2? In particular, do we know what resolution it outputs to in hand-held mode, and whether it is getting up-scaled?

  • -5

I got for free this one, great game.

    • +2

      Where was it free?

    • where?

      • +4

        methinks piracy

  • Nice, it wasn't on sale on the store when I checked earlier last week

  • At this price, would rather a physical edition.

    • +5

I mean at the price of a Hyundai I would rather a Porsche but unless you've got a link for where you can get the physical copy for a similar price your comment is fairly arbitrary isn't it?

      • The physical is about $54 @ EBs (pre-owned) and $80 @ amazon (new).

Ummmm not sure if it’s worth it to get physical tbh.

      • -1

That example makes no sense. When has a Porsche been the same price of a Hyundai? The physical edition lowest was $34.

Would you rather a Hyundai then knowing the Porsche was the same price?

Here you go $39 for the physical PS4 version:
        https://ebay.us/m/DIyXvC

        $36 pre-owned PS4:
        https://www.ebgames.com.au/product/ps4/293629-octopath-trave…

Both of those include free upgrade to PS5 edition.

        • +4

Playstation and XBox games often go on sale for much lower than Switch games, so not really a fair comparison.

          • -3

@Deco: Are you still playing the same game? Unless you own just the Switch, then yes, not fair comparison.

        • +1

Since when is a PS4 or PS5 the same as the Switch? You don't like me using an oranges to apples example so you shouldn't either. Show me a physical copy of Octopath Traveler II on Switch for a similar price to the digital version please.

          • -5

@BLB1984: Your example made no sense whatsoever. I compared the same game, on a more powerful system. While also having resell value. You compared a normal car company, to a luxury car company that's not even related to video games that can't even play the same video game and you're saying my example is oranges to apples??? Are we even having the same logical discussion???

Wait for a sale, Switch physical was $49 on sale. It took this long for the digital one to go on sale. And you can't compare digital to physical.

Need to rethink your arguments a little better. You're getting a physical game not magic Internet dust.

I picked it up, typically love turn based combat and have always loved the art style of these games. My god is the voice acting absolutely horrible. Perhaps one for handheld mode while my wife is watching something on TV.

    • Turn on Japanese VA and play with subtitles.

Japanese VA has some star studded VA's.

I think it has one of the VA's from Jojo, initial d's ryosuke, then the lesser known protagonist from Rakugo.

      Really amazing VA's

      • Great advice, will try this tonight!

        • Apparently the VA for one of them big bads is Ryosuke Takahashi's VA and also, Dio from Jojo

          Epic sauce

  • can get 1 & 2 combined on steam for about $75 on steam summer sale.
Considering getting this for my handheld. What are peoples thoughts on this? How many hours do you expect to get out of this game?

    • Scrolling down from the link above and there's a switch bundle for $70.16 also.

But you save 20c if you buy separately lol

      • +1

Each to their own, I personally prefer to pay a bit more to get it on steam.

Makes it easier so that I can play on my gaming PC or handheld or laptop, but also so that I know I don't need to worry about the hardware becoming obsolete…i.e. if I want to play the game in 5 years time I don't need to pull out my old switch, instead I just use whatever PC I have at that point in time.

Of course, My above reasoning doesn't apply to everyone, hence why I said each to their own

        • +1

Totally get your standpoint and I've been leaning towards that reasoning lately also. PC games will always have longevity due to the very nature of them.

  • Any benefit in buying the physical copy versus this digital version?

    • +1

only if you want to re-sell

  • Epic RPG game 👌 Haven't played yet but know someone who has - and trust their opinion. Have the PS4 version already too. Was mesmerized watching someone play no1. - yes I'm one of those people who watch other people play regularly!

If your into games like this play Eastward, Secret of Mana, Terranigma and Illusion of Gaia - great RPGs. The last 3 are retro games.

https://www.greenmangaming.com/games/octopath-traveler-ii-pc… $33.98 if you after it on steam from GMG. Going to grab it at that price.

$28.78 for the first Octopath at GMG for steam

  • +1

SE need to patch these to 1080P portable on S2 let's hope they do.

    • Yeah I bought this before I read that it didn't get a performance boost. Shouldn't have assumed, better off getting it on Steam and playing it on Steam Deck.

Wish I'd known about this previously. Thanks OP!!

  • Anyone know if you need to play the first one to play this one?

    • Nah completely new cast of characters.

  • Still haven't completed the post game sidequests. I kind of killed the game for myself when I got most of the late game gear and just used Hikari to Sougetsusen everything to death on the first turn. Bosses only lasted a few more rounds more.

Just want to add that if you're happy with digital and want Octopath Traveller 1, check if any EB stores in your area has the Code-In-A-Box version in stock.

It's currently $28 at EB, which is slightly cheaper than buying it from the eShop.

The case and cover art are pretty useless, since it's a code-in-a-box. But having spare cases on hand could be handy to replace a scratched up case when you buy a 2nd hand game, or a new game's case gets damaged in transit.
