Amazon Prime required for this deal - make sure you check the $230 Coupon

Just sharing the details on a Ryzen 7940HS mini PC that I just purchased for $619 (make sure you check the $230 coupon) - to me it seems like a great deal.

I had been looking at Beelink SER8, GMKTec K8 plus, as I was in the market to replace my GMKTec K2 mini PC and have been happy with the Ryzen 7735HS, but had been growing tired of the high fan noise, and had been getting a few BSOD lately and was thinking of taking the easy way out with a fresh PC.

Anyhow, while looking for a Prime Day deal for a nice mini PC, I noticed there was a coupon on the Reatan Alloy 9, and remembered hearing the name last year so I thought I would check some old reviews…

Robtech's video review of this mini PC highlights the low noise and efficient cooling with dual fan design, predominantly metal construction and ease of access.

A few downsides that had me (briefly) on the fence on this one.

  1. No (64Gbps) oculink port, so if you want an eGPU, you will need to use USB4 (40Gbps)
  2. The WiFi and BT antennae are mounted on the plastic base, however the metal housing may attenuate the signal strength, according to the Team Pandory review.
  3. There is no monitor mount, so it will probably live on the desk (my GMKTec K2 sits behind the monitor, freeing up space on the desk).
  4. The supplied 1TB SSD is Gen 3, so a bit slower than the latest Gen 4 drives.

Anyhow, what got me over the line were the following:

  1. Fan noise appears to be acceptably low, according to the two reviews above.
  2. The SSD slots both support Gen 4 speeds.
  3. Two M.2 SSD slots are in the PC.
  4. Dual USB 4 ports on the front and 4 USB 3 Gen 2 at the back.
  5. $619 for a Ryzen 9 7950HS - to me this is a great deal.

Really great price, I believe the last time a Ryzen mini PC with 780M graphics dropped to this price range was brought up in a passing mention in the comments of this deal at ~$683.99 for the 2TB GMKTec K8 Plus.

  • +2

Was getting keen on a Beelink SER8. Just haven't heard of this brand before. Reatan any good?

    • +1

Similarly, I was a little unsure also. Anyhow I will give it a go, as Amazon are usually good with returns with Prime if there are issues.

The only time I had heard of Reatan myself had been on Robtech's reviews over the years, however after looking around a bit more with this deal, the reviews seemed good to me.

  • I was trying to remember why this mini PC seemed familiar to me and now I realise it looks very similar tothe Minisforum UM790 Pro -
The UM790 had great PR leading up to the launch when it was released, I got very close to buying one at the time but decided to hold back and just get the GMKtec K2.
Back then, I recall there were some issues with stability of drivers however I would think they would all be well sorted by now.

Amazon have the simalarly specced UM790 Pro for $847 for Prime Day

Ayy.. I too was eying the K8 Plus for some time and then I saw this and was tentative thinking it seems too good for the price and the coupon situation was random (only if logged in?). I did the same relatively fast paced research as you and agree on all your pro's & con's. Also (An Extra 5% Off Your Order When Using PayTo at Checkout https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/914100).

    • +2

Not really a fan of giving direct debit authority without good reason, though I am wondering if I should cancel and re-do the order with that 5% extra off……

      • +1

I have a seperate low balance account that I was happy to use for this deal only. I’ll cancel the PAYTO agreement when I get the pc.

        • Just check the returns process is still good with PayTo though - that the refund gets back to your a/c without drama.

    • I got K8 Plus for around $380 AUD with Aliexpress coupons a few weeks ago - barebones kit, bought RAM and NVME separately. So far so good.

Initially went Proxmox route but iGPU passthrough was too much of a pain to get working so I defaulted to custom W11 image with qbit, plex and syncthing and apollo + tailscale for game streaming within network and over internet.

Working well, right now just using iGPU but at some point I might setup Oculink to add an eGPU.

      • Is that barebone or it came with some ram and ssd? $380 for none barebone is insane.

        • +2

Sorry yeah - edited that it was barebone config. Would rather pick my own RAM/storage than some generic brand even if it's a bit cheaper.

From my research Beelink / GMKTec seem the most reliable / best value mini pc vendors. Aoostar looked nice but seems to have a lot of users complaining about defect issues. Minisforum seems reputable as well but I don't like that their Oculink setup requires you sacrifice M2 slot if you want to use it.

      • How is the Apollo game streaming? One of the reasons I got this mini pc on top of a Plex server upgrade is for game streaming, at home and over 5G.

        • Local all-ethernet with Flint 2 is basically flawless even at 150mbps bitrate (I tested Hades). WiFi was not usable for me at all, not sure if it's the apartment I'm in but even in close proximity at low bitrate I would get lag spikes and stutters. Did some testing at 60mbps over internet and it seemed playable / stable but haven't extensively tested it so YMMV.

          • @RedSky: Sorry, do you mean if you connected the K8 via wifi it was unusable? If so, that seems to be on par with sentiment that the wifi in these mini pc’s isn’t spectacular.

            • @EitherWayUp: No I mean game streaming was unstable from mini PC to client when the client was on wifi instead of also Ethernet connected like the mini PC. I haven't tested wifi on the mini PC as I always one l intend to have it wired to the router.

              • @RedSky: That’s strange.. wouldn’t the client just be routing via the router wifi signal?

                • @EitherWayUp:

                  • mini pc -ethernet-> router -ethernet-> client pc (perfect connection)
                  • mini pc -ethernet-> router -wifi-> client pc or mobile device (unstable)
      • Which listing and coupons you stacked together?

  • +1

All it needs is a sd card slot.

    • +1

Just use a USB adapter, they're dirt cheap.

  • +1

    Thanks OP!
Been eyeing on these mini pc for months. Top of my list was the GMKTec K8 plus. This one seems missing one extra network port and Oculink compare to that, but USB4 might covers some of that loss. Anw, this price has beaten everything.

If you check out the rest of the series from Reatan, they look like clones of BOSGAME?

See this: https://www.amazon.com.au/Reatan-Desktop-Computer-5600MHz-PC… and this one: https://www.amazon.com.au/Gaming-BOSGAME-Computers-Display-O…

    • +1

I suppose they use the same factory for chassis and chop and change other parts. This particular model is identical to the Minisforum UM790 PRO, which is a well received Mini PC.

  • +1

Got this Ryzen 9 for $619, unlikely to find much cheaper at the moment. I don't do much gaming.

This will allow me to retire an old Ryzen 5 on an ATX motherboard which is bulky & power hungry.

Just a noob question.. Is window 11 pre-installed on this mini pc?

    • +3

Windows 11 Pro is indeed preinstalled, hardcoded to the MB. Best practice suggests to do a clean install before using it for the first time.

  • Coupon doesn't appear for me, am prime member

    • +1

Just ran out of stock unfortunately

      • +1

Bugger. Anything else of similar value?

        • Unfortunately all equivalent specs are at least another $200..

        • Damn I procrastinated too long.
My other alternatives are Bosgame M4 or Beelink SER8. Both in the $700s

      • Still showing nil stock?

  • Received the computer today - interestingly it has a single 32GB DDR5 5600 Crucial SODIMM, and not the 2x16GB they said in the description.

Been running this little machine for a couple days now, think I need to share some thought about:

This is definitely clone of Minisforum UM790 Pro. How do I know? So I ran into BSOD issue randomly when first using this. Not sure that was machine's fault or it was lazzy me who did not fresh install windows but clone my old one into this. But I noticed some of the drivers were missing or install incorrectly (my Realtek ethernet was indentified as some wierd virtual name).

Was looking at Reatan website but it is quite poor informative. Decided to use Minisforum UM790 Pro's resources that I found on their website. Started with multimedia and network drivers, looking good. Then finally flashed my pc's BIOS with the UM790 pro, was a bit scared. But now my Reatan totally transformed into Minisforum.

Not sure it's a advantage or draw back but my pc is now running flawlessly since that day.

    • Thanks for sharing, great to hear the other drivers worked for a successful migration.
Was your previous windows machine similar hardware?

      • +1

Nah. Totally different. My old one was i7 6700 pair with GTX 1650. Boot into Windows 10 straight away after cloning. I was surprised too.

        • +1

Great recovery with such different hardware!

    • I agree, it’s a clone of the Minisforum, there’s even some Minisforum file I found somewhere in system settings. Not a bad thing though as Minisforum is quite reputable in the Mini PC game. Say, is the Minisforum BIOS exactly as it would be on the U790 Pro? Whilst functional, the Reatan one is very basic.

      • Recently got a Bosgame and yeah very basic BIOS. On the flip side, I also have a Trigkey and it's got nearly every setting under the sun in there.

If you are encountering substandard WiFi (kind of expected from some reviews, reddit comments etc), I found improvement forcing it to the 5GHz band with the following settings (from device manager, select Network adapters-> Intel AX210

    802.11 a/b/g Wireless Mode 5GHz 802.11a
MIMO Power Save Mode No SMPS
    Preferred Band Prefer 5GHz + 6GHz

speedtest results improved from 30Mbps to 100 MBps (on 100 Mbps internet with WiFI 6 wireless access points)

    YMMV

  • +1

I brought up the 1x32GB RAM configuration (different to the advertised 2x16GB dual channel) with the seller via Amazon and they were very helpful.
They provided an $80 credit, which I put towards a second 32GB SODIMM to match the installed module.
It is now 64GB in dual channel configuration, working well.

    • Did you have to send pic for proof?

      • I sent it with the original discussion anyhow, as well as the purchase record of the additional SODIMM

        • How did you get purchase record? Because sold out it’s no longer listed on Amazon.

          • @EitherWayUp: They already know I purchased the PC, and they wrote the listing anyhow, so I'm sure they were able to confirm what was on the listing at the time of purchase
I showed them a screenshot of the memory purchase.
