Ball-tearingly good cpu cooler. Take an upvote for the bang for buck champ of OzBargain…

    • +1

Ouch…sounds painful. Not sure if you used it the right way 😐

  • What's their best 360mm AIO? Sooo many models to choose from.

    • +2

A good well regarded 360 AIO is ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360. Check your radiator space though, I needs about 70 roughly…

      https://amzn.asia/d/8ILRNTw

    • +1

Thermalright AIO liquid coolers are not as good as their air coolers. Not recommended

      • Where are you seeing that? Their AIOs perform better than their air coolers, see here

        • -1

every AIO performs better than an air cooler
theyre just a ton more expensive

          • +1

@bAps: Correct on the first part, and very subjective on the 2nd part. Their 360mm AIOs are selling for <$30 more than this air cooler. Hardly what many would consider "a ton more expensive"

  • +1

Have the RGB version in my ITX, my 13600K doesn't go above 60-70c. Excellent cooler.

  • what's the differences between this and this one…just black and silver?
    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0BPQ7MMV7/ref=ox_sc_sa…

    • -1

      Yeppers.

    • +9

      just black and silver

No, The Peerless Assassin (your link) and the Phantom Spirit (the original deal) are slightly different models. The Phantom Spirit consistently performs slightly better in reviews that I've seen, though the difference is minor and it's unlikely you would notice the difference without taking measurements.

      • +1

Oops. True dat. 7 vs 6 heat pipes.

There are black, silver, white and RGB versions of the PS120z I should have checked your links before confirming…

    • The Phantom Spirit is a newer model which performs a little better than the Peerless Assassin which is the one you've linked. Just buy whatever is cheaper at the time, they are both amazing air coolers.

      • 280W TDP for this here, versus 300+ish TDP for the other one.

These are overkill when generic coolers from aliexpress can cool most CPU's these days, for mere dollars, delivered.

        • Recent i7s have been caught doing 250-300W under load at stock voltage. Overclocked they can exceed 350W.

Even for sensible stuff (ie AMD, lol), I am sure those <$10 fans are not quiet, even if they do manage.

If there's a hidden gem out there, please share.

I have it cooling down my 7800x3d. It's rock solid. It's already bang for buck at MSRP price in my opinion

  • +1

I was going to buy the HSF for just the fan. Great product.

  • Is it compatible with this case - Thermaltake View 170 ARGB
    https://amzn.asia/d/gP8v1ef ?

    • +1

Yes, the case says it can support an air cooler of 160mm in height. The Phantom Spirit is 154mm in height.

  • +2

i bought 8 of these a month ago for our new office build pc's, the rgb version though, all the research they are best bang for buck in my opinion to cool the ryzen 7 7700

    • +1

Do you have a link to the RGB versions? Have you tried the EVO at all? I think I will buy one for my next build, but not sure which one.

Currently using a Noctua NH-D15 (original version). I assume this will be a decent bit better?

Does anyone know, also, the Phantom Spirit 120 EVO link for $72 shows no stock? Has that all sold out, or is it showing stock for some of you? I was interested in getting that one instead. Was $72 a special price for that PS EVO?

I see with the Peerless Assassin there is a 140mm version. Is the cooler the same as their 120mm version, but just with a 140mm fan included instead of a 120mm fan?

One other question I forgot to ask - For anyone that has any of these Thermalright coolers (Phantom Spirit, Peerless Assassin, Royal Pretor etc.), it says RAM height of 44mm. Can you move the fan up like you can with a Noctua coolers (if you have enough side panel clearance in your case - I have 185mm in mine) such as the NH-D15 that I currently have and install taller RAM?

      • +1

I'm not the person you replied to, but here's the ARGB version https://amzn.asia/d/h6q12E2

        • Thank you.

      • +3

I have the EVO. It is fantastic. Very quiet, keeps my 9800X3D plenty cool while gaming at around 50% fan speed and you have to really listen for it, highly recommend.

Yes, you can move the fan up. I had to do this with my RGB Corsair Vengeance RAM, it’s moved up about 5mm or so.

        • +1

Same here. Fan can be attached above the ram if needed.

        • Good to know that it can be moved up, thanks.

      • +2

I went from my original Noctua NH-D15 to the Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 and I think the temps are a little higher. The way my PC is laid out it's a real pain to take out the motherboard to switch coolers again so I'm just leaving it for now. The D15 is still an awesome cooler.

I'm running a Ryzen 3900x that I've underclocked a bit to try and keep the temp down but it still gets up there in temperature very quickly. Definitely a power hungry CPU.

        • I have the nh d15 chromax black on my home PC 3900x with rtx 3080 and it's great yeah. For office computers I didn't want to spend that much so settled with the spirit seems like it is capable of 90% of the cooling ability but at a much better cost

        • Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I find that kind of weird, though, as the reviews I've seen at GamersNexus seem to show the Thermalright coolers outperforming the older model Noctua coolers. I wonder what is going on there? Is it possible that the Thermalright can handle higher wattage/overlocked CPUs better?

So I may as well just keep the NH-D15 then and not waste the money on buying one of these? Having said that, if I need a new cooler for a different system/build, I'll definitely get a Thermalright as cost to performance is much, much better than Noctua. Value for money is much better with the Thermalrights.

          • +1

@Ice009: Yes if you already have a NH-D15 I wouldn’t bother. Temps are going to be much of a muchness.

    • Do you even need this much cooling for a 7700?

      • I bought it so I can run them at their slowest speed to achieve the most quite operating without breaking the bank and have the capability of extreme cooling if required during high temperature days etc mainly

        • +1

Wouldn't your office have air conditioning so not be affected by hot days? Thought an AXP90 would be sufficient and quieter for an office PC with 7700.
Wondering if i should return AXP90-53 and buy this instead

          • @8azinga: Yea probably could easily get away with something less powerful for low workload basic office work like word excel, browsing and some low intensity software.. I originally was going to go with Thermalright Assassin Spirit 120 EVO Dark CPU Air Cooler
SKU: Assassin Spirit 120 EVO Dark
Selling for $32 each at centecom..
But decided to overkill it. Probably would have done just as good with even less noise possibly, for low workload computing. Boss doesn't switch on ac if can avoid it, so temperatures can reach near extremes hehhe

  • Replaced my pre-built cooling fan with this in my Lian Li DAN-A3 matx case and it fit just perfect. Temps are down and it's quiet.

    • Oooo… can I ask how you have your fans set up in your case? I have the same… currently with back exhaust, three top exhaust and nothing on side or bottom (mainly as my 4080S is taking up the room)… watched the review from GamersNexus and think they mentioned not to put any on the bottom anyway or the side? What temps do you usually have if you use it for gaming?

      • +1

2x 120mm exhausting at the top, 1x exhausting at the back. 2 at the bottom as intake. The cooler is exhausting towards the back. Umm max temps i see for cpu are around like 60. I could be wrong. Would need to sus it again.

I got the dual fan 4070 super so it's quite small and I can fit the fans at the bottom

I uploaded a small clip I found on my phone when I installed it. You can see everything

  • Pretty good value. Noticed the non-SE variants have a flat top, the 120 SE like this one has heat pipes sticking out. Any idea the benefit of each or purely aesthetic? Maybe few millimetres of clarence, but the flat top ones are actually taller, 157mm vs 154mm.

    • +1

The increased height increases performance ever so slightly. Paid $63 for the non-SE.

  • +1

How would this be for gaming vs a cheapish (~$100) AIO. CPU being a AM5.

    • +2

This one is better and you don't have to worry about the liquid leak from AIO. This cooler can handle i7 or Ryzen 7 level CPU without overclocking. However, if you are using i9 or Ryzen 9, water cooling is probably a must.

      https://youtu.be/Qzu06oYycPY?si=twvbgraMTcffMV1H

    • For gaming you could easily use the cheaper $30 coolers

    • AM5 is pretty broad. 7600X? 9950X3D?
For mid range these are perfect.

      • Haven't decided yet, am looking for a good deal on something decent maybe 7800x3d

  • You need a E/ATX case

    • +3

No you don't. EATX is for wider boards - it says nothing about cooler clearance. Plenty of mATX cases fit 154mm coolers.

  • Any deals for fan half that size, same colour & design?

  • This one much better than original 7500f cooling fans? Also easy to replace it?
