Isn't it an absolute joke that $8.50 is the RRP? Ridiculous.

    • +19

I know, used to eat a lot of these chocolates, but even the discounted price is ridiculous

Whittakers is one of the few trusted brands in NZ, and have famously not (profanity) with the recipe one whit.

Cocoa prices have gone up, they make a transparent release about when that happens - but the price here is as good as in NZ on special.

Whittakers is better quality chocolate at a lower price than Tonys and Lindt per 100g.

        • +20

          Lindt is overrated af

        • I don’t usually like referencing Choice as a good source, I think they’re overrated, however today on my iPhone news feed I did see that Choice just reviewed different brands of milk chocolate, and they gave first place to Tony’s, and second place to Lindt’s Excellent Extra creamy milk block. Whittaker’s creamy milk block ranked further down the list.

@HuzzahIndeed: They rated feastables milk choc very highly (Mr Beasts butyric acid aka vomit).

I love choice as a rough guide / curation - less so for food.

OzB's buying milk need to hand in their license, too - dark chocolate is more expensive (and normally same price per g). Heck, there's no 200g blocks in NZ - dark almond is great value at 250g block because you actually get a heavier block than 250g single tone flavours.

            • @Bisky1: I’ve never had Mr Beast Feastables Milk Chocolate so I wouldn’t know.

I would’ve liked to have seen some other brands in there too, like Haighs.

Personally I much prefer dark chocolate over milk.

They only gave Whittaker’s creamy milk chocolate block a score of 71 out of 100, it rank 11th:

@HuzzahIndeed: My last company partnered with MrBeast - they are competing with Hersheys and rely on marketing, like most influencer products.

Chocolate is very personal, and food isn't quantitative, hence my comment - I read the article and am more sure of how to use Choice than I was yesterday.

My loyalty to whittakers comes from the fact every person I know with family overseas who moved to NZ, took it their family, and its one the things i/we are proud in because its good, punches above its weight and brings so much joy without compromising.

All these families members loved and demanded it every time.

My extended family on both sides, all my friends and my mums friends etc. I lived in NZ for 27 years, and have bought pretty much every brand their is to buy.

Unless I go artisinal or high end, whittakers wins every time.

@Bisky1: I am a New Zealand born Australian citizen, so I have a similar fondness of Whittaker’s as a brand. However some of Whittaker’s chocolate flavours aren’t always great, so when they’re shit I am willing to say so. I am not going to refuse to admit it out of having a bias towards the brand and wanting to be loyal to it.

Cocoa prices have gone up?. From where did you gather this mind blowing information?

        • -1

Whittakers is one of the few trusted brands in NZ, and have famously not (profanity) with the recipe one whit.

That's fair but a brand cannot so much advantage on the price front on the other end. RRP is almost a rip off.

          • @ScribbleSass: No, unlike other brands Whittaker's has gone down the shrinkflation path, they source ethical cocoa and pay living wage to their employees.

They could shrink their blocks like Cadbury did, cheapened the ingredients etc and charge close to the price for half of volume.

      • Reducing demand might be a blessing in disguise for you

    • +5

Find a comparable block of chocolate for cheaper and I'll buy it.

    • +2

I used to eat family blocks when they were $2.50 on sale like in about 20 minutes but now just buy the 50g blocks when they are $1 which works out way cheaper and healthier than current prices.

      • A flat white also was the same price back then.

    • +1

at this price its cheaper than cadbury at 40% off

    • +3

What would you prefer? $8.50 for 250g of Whittakers or like $6.50 for 180g or less as other brands shrink their block sizes. Between inflation and cocoa bean prices being nearly double what they were in Jan 2024 something has to give.

    • +1

Just yelled at my phone after seeing the RRP 😂

    • +1

      What an idiotic post tbh.
      Consumers complain about shrinkflation
This company didn't shrink flate and you still complain.

So carmar, tell us if you ran a company and you base material went up 30% how would you deal with it?

    • Australian dream is over.

Coconut Block… should be behind the counter with the Sudafed

  • +40

    I just ordered 45 blocks, + a monthly 10% off.
Because I'm an adult, with free will, and I will do whatever I want.
(mostly cuz when i open my pantry and see a pyramid of gold foil chocolate I feel happy)

    • +6

I ordered 15 blocks from last months's Big W sale and used the last 10% off from Big W as well and honestly the pantry thing was my motivation too. Now there's only 5 left and feel sad, I think I need to restock again.

      • +1

If you walk to big w this time you'll burn off at least 2 pieces

  • +10

What happened to mango white choc coconut ;(

    • +3

      Agree that flavour was awesome

    • Wait they killed that??? Noooooooo!!!

    • It’s pure devine

    • Good lord I wish I knew about this when it was still around

    • +2

No great loss it was way too sweet with very artificial fruitiness and barely any semblance to actually tasting like chocolate, one of their worst misses

but chocolate is personal I know I know

      • +1

Weird because it has no artificial fruitiness in it… Unless you count mango puree, dried mango, apple puree, toasted coconut and natural flavour as artificial?

    • @grack I didn’t like the caramelised white chocolate mango and coconut flavour, and neither did any of my work colleagues when I took in a block to share. I did like the Blondie caramelised white chocolate block on its own though without the mango and coconut in it, but that’s disappeared. One of my other Whittaker favourites that doesn’t seem to be available in Australia anymore was the 72% cocoa Ghana peppermint dark chocolate block.

I might have to try the newish flavour Peanut & Caramel Brittle milk chocolate block.

  • -4

Weren't these like $4 recently lol. half price

  • The best, market leader in the <$10 range.

  • +2

Here's a question to ponder: why would they put the price down if people are happy to pay an ever-higher price for the same product?

    • +2

Doesn't that question applies to everything that has ever been on sale?

      • +1

Yes - prices rise because (too many) people don't make rational purchases, they make emotional ones. The consequences for us all are an ever-rising cost of living.

    • But ideally your wages rise to meet the same inflation.

  • So.. the discount brings it back down to almost normal prices again? :)

    • +1

      *the new normal

      • Oh sorry: "So.. the discount brings it back down to almost new normal prices again?"

  • ooh dark chocolate. thanks OP
