there are concerns that the cameras might capture politicians in cars doing naughty things , corrupt things etc ,

        • +3

That would fill up the sd card pretty quickly

same shxt as they banned Huawei for US's interest, on the cost of AU

with the IDF blowing up pagers in lebanon and tracking phones in iran so to be able to kill scientists, i’d say there far bigger concerns from things that the US approves for use and them collecting data.

For anyone curious of the reasons around this. A few years back Dahua and Hikvision IP cameras were found to have backdoors installed that allowed people to access any networks the cameras were attached to. Dahua and Hikvision released firmware updates to patch the backdoors, but due to the fact that the backdoors were most likely deliberately put in place, and the companies are part owned by the Chinese military, it was considered too dangerous to allow them in US and Australian federal sites.

      • i always though this was funny as anyone with even very basic cisco skills can mitigate this

btw,. as an aside Spain has just appointed Huawei as their infotech supplier… they feel like if its a choice btw. US Israeli or British tenders then the Chinese are the least worst option lol…

i mean i get it… the US are unreliable actors, the British are US lackeys and you shouldnt take a message from the IDF… i mean clearly

      • Old Samsung "smart" TV was with a built-in camera for Skype, which was used for spying you even when you were not using Skype. Samsung admitted it was used for better serving us.
So, why is there no ban to Samsung?

        • I remember that. Wasn't it the NSA that were using it?

I think the difference here is that we're talking about commercial government use vs personal use. These devices were banned from federal government buildings because it could result in government secrets being released to another country. As oppose to a foreign country watching how many cheetohs you eat.

Also important to note that state governments haven't put out a policy to block these devices. Most still do block the use of the devices out of paranoia, but there's no official policies regarding it.

          • @GunnerMcDagget: Australia's government doesn't care about how big companies secretly collected video of our private life.

Is that a min-USB port I see on the side of the unit?
    Showing it's age right there….

And what's with the "2304p x 1296p"? I thought the "p" was about the progressive scanning of the horizontal lines.

It's literally landfill. Both reviews on Costco website are bad and from a year ago.

      • i feel like dahua just wants to get rid of old mini usb shells… I'm not too opposied to this as you hook it up and you forget about - as long as they provide the cable

what's type c gonna buy me?

and yea this is a mere "1.5k" device not even 2k - they say so in their brochure

    • what’s a better deal for the money ? need dash cam for my son on his P plates.

      • I'd really recommend investing into a higher quality unit, especially if any hit and runs occur. Most of the cheap ones do not have the resolution and bitrate to capture license plates.

      • As notaccel said, the cheaper ones are less likely to catch a licence plate, or be as clear at night/etc

Dash cams are an easily transferable item if he sells (or crashes (lets hope not)) the car, so it makes sense to but a decent one - to me anyway.

BlackVue 5xx and 7xx have been well rated here, along with VioFo.
You'll want one with a Starvis 2 sensor, 60fps and a capacitor. if you want parked recording it can get a little more expensive

All that said, I bought a Miofive with hardwire kit for ~$100&115, but thats because I have a limited budget and don't drive that often.

  • just wondering if having something rather than nothing with this or other poorly rated devices suffices, or need to spend min $100

Some of the really cheap ones look like they work okay during bright daylight (ideal conditions), but have such a poor image quality at other times that they're almost useless. Muddy, blurry, pixelated images are unlikely to be useful in the event of an incident where you need to identify a person or vehicle.

Since bad conditions (low light, raining etc) carry a higher driving risk, you really do want a dashcam that gives you utterly useless footage for the sake of saving an extra $50?

About $100 really is the bare minimum for a decent dashcam - the Viofo A119 can be sourced from AliExpress for about $140. 70mai make a decent quality budget camera too. See this thread for more leads: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/914356

      • thanks

  • Any experience with Miofive 4k dash cams available on Amazon? Its time to get some protection while parking. But as mentioned above no point to go cheap and have a useless video when something happens.

  • USB Mini? What is this? 1998? Why no USB-C ?

    • Saves 4c per device, I guess.
