Would prefer the government doing something to increase the royalty intake and reserving gas that we need for domestic consumption instead of short term appeasement of handouts paid by income and consumption taxes. Unfortunately this is the tried and tested way to win votes

    • +14

If there’s one thing I learnt from Covid, when government are throwing money out, grab as much as you can, cause they will want it all back eventually whether you took the free money or not.

      • They don't only want their money back. They want Massive profits in return.

There's no such thing as free money especially from the government

    • +1

I don't think the Vic Gov't need to win votes at the moment…

    • +5

Victoria don't export any gas, it's all for domestic consumption

    • +3

This is from the State Government not Federal. Victoria doesn't export gas.

Me when I'm a puppet that regurgitates the Australian institute without critically thinking, or thinking at all.

On the note of the mining discussion:
Yes! Our governments should shoot themselves in the foot and try to go against the mining oligarchs instead of finding novel ways to approach issues!

Nothing ever bad happened to a government that tried go get its fair share (this is sarcasm, I refer you to all of Australian history)

Realistically I do hope as the old generations die off and established media loses grip on society (and hopefully isn't replaced by "independents" (sponsored but the establishments)) the progressive and social ideals of a country nationalising core industries and resources becomes popular and unchanging with the youth. Anyways, time will tell.

      • +1

Not sure what you're getting at here. Grattan Institute's Tony Wood battled hard against WA having a domestic gas reserve just as he's done for the east coast.

Worked out rather well for Western Australia yet he still fights the fight here.

Australia spent more than $1.5 Billion dollars for Ukraine, a war which not even ours. It could have been used within Australia, for better living.

    • +25

And 400 million cold hard cash on the Voice referendum that nobody asked for!

      • -4

Yeah what a waste of a referendum. We could have finally changed the flag, or ditched the monarchy, and got a President.

      • +8

It was in the 2022 campaign promise. You cannot get more literal in regards to asking for something than voting in the guy who said he would do it. That is the single reason for voting. You ask a question and you vote for the person who answers it in the way you prefer. Do I have to break this down any further?

And unfortunately $400 million is chump change in regard to a trillion dollar deficit. I reckon we start with the 7 billion dollar a year hand out to private health

(yes the government who provides public healthcare, subsidises (ie gives free money) to private health insurers (ie profit driven companies) instead of just funding the public sector better/more, thank you John Howard for such genius ideas, may god bless you with a fire man pole to hell (selling all our gold reserves, selling Telstra, selling the remaining 55% of commbank, overseeing many states selling off their electricity and water, not taxing mining companies during a mining boom (but ig taking guns off the street was good?))

        • +2

Howard and the Liberals have set this country up for utterly failure over the long term, particularly in regards to selling off public money making assets, housing polices that benefit the rich, and healthcare (including the massive waste you mentioned to prop up private businesses).

    • Fax 📠!

    • No no no. You're forgetting. It's an investment, to make sure Europe knows we're on their side. Cause America is an unstable nation, who can't be trusted, and we can't even consider having positive relations with China/Indonesia/India.

Yes, I can imagine all of those Europeans, being mass conscripted to defend Darwin against the Chinese. They'll defo do it! More money to Europe!

      • -1

China already own the port so not sure who’ll be doing the defending.

        • +4

China owns the lease. If Chinese investment, nets us profit faster, I don't see the problem. Besides, the Chinese maybe just wanna buy our resources, and control Chinese people in Australia, I doubt they want to control our lands.

China aren't our friends, but they shouldn't be seen as our enemies. Such hostile mentality, gets you in a "Ukraine" situation.

American/European problems, should be left out of our relationship regarding China.

        • Both sides of federal government agreed to buy the port back/stop the lease

    • +8

I'm glad they are helping out Ukraine against a country which… (checks notes)… killed 38 Australians and has never apologised for the fact.

    • +4

Wasn't it also 350 million so Papua New Guinea could play rugby?

    • You could say the same about most things. I'll never understand the endless handouts Western countries dish out. I'm betting the Middle East didn't help during the Queensland floods.
Look after your issues at home before

  • +10

Thank goodness we're not in record debt

    • vote stuffing for 2026

  • +8

Stop selling our critical infrastructure to foreign countries and we wouldn't need this.

  • +1

Any decent gas welcome credits at the moment?

    • +1

think agl have an ongoing incentive

  • +8

when cost increases are beyond a joke on utilities.
    This is a diversion.
So much wasted money as noted by people which achieves nothing for Australians.
This would cover a month or less of increased prices for avg family.

    • +2

It's just a tick box to be ticked by politicians for their performance review

"Worked tirelessly to provide much needed relief for the crisis of rising cost of living"

The relief being $100 for subset of people struggling that barely covers the cost of energy for 1 month.

  • +8

Ah yes more buying votes for the typical ALP voter.

    • +3

Pretty sure Victoria is a perma labor state at this stage.

      • hubris comes before the oh fck i shlda been strategising and lobbying for improved policy positions now we have a fckn liberal gvt

  • +1

When they do their annual performance review, have you given Any handout, is one of the criteria for progression.

  • +7

I thought the Victorian State Government was broke?

    • -1

so we stop paying the public servants..?

      • Is that your suggestion? Mine is to shaft 2/3rds of DPC and then scrap the railway loop we can't afford

    • They are, but you can easily print more money

      • states can print banknotes/mint coins or/and otherwise issue currency?

        mind fairly blown

        • Not that, but they can issue bonds. By the way, VIC has the lowest credit rating. In layman's term, if that's not simple enough, our state govt paid the highest interest rate in the nation as we have the least worthy balance sheets compared to other state govts.

          • @WillKillfor5Cents: When shit really hit the fan the federal will bail us out. They need Victoria to be doing well since we are the 2nd biggest economy in the country?

    • Tax money is infinite, and no responsibility is needed nor accountability

  • +1

How can the broke victorian government afford this and all those public servant salaries? They'll bring in a new tax. They found a hack!

  • +1

So concession card holders get $100 but everyone living in apartments on cheaper embedded networks get $150?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/916231

Who actually comes up with this stuff?

    • Wonder if u can claim both? Know afew friends who down sized, sold their 3mil home and moved into a luxury apartment whilst also on the pension.

  • Loving the discussion, but, $100 is $100. Still not going to influence who I vote for in the future.

    • they not trying to buy votes, they trying to relieve financial pressure for those on transfer payments and thereby somewhat galvanise the economy

  • How are these given, credit on electricity bill or direct to bank account?

    • credit to your energy retailer

  • Another round of relief payments to energy providers

    • does it not reduce your bill by an amount that corresponds to the bonus payment?

      • Just tax people less instead of funnelling excess money directly into energy providers’ pockets.

        • transfer payments are a feature of pretty well every economy (i wont claim all cos i'm not familiar with them all).

in north america for example a ton of transfer payments go to companies like tesla in an effort to incentivise innovation and stimulate consumer take up of evs (tho looks like new policy in current admin)

the idea that we can just reduce taxes that will then give folks more disposable to pay for things like power bills is just nonsense

tax people less instead of funnelling excess money directly into energy providers’ pockets

that money is going toward the bills you would otherwise pay out of your own pocket

  • -2

One thing Labour govt does best! Throw away money and increase tax!

    • -2

did y know that labor gvts are significantly lower taxing than lib gvts?

      • -2

        oh really!!!

      • Guess you haven't been living in Victoria

      • LMAO then why do they even exist. That would be against the fundamental philosophy of left wing parties.

        • you seem to think labor are a left wing party

labor're roundly centrist, even andrews' leadership was weighted down by pathological centrist influences

  • Concession card holders….

    • not a fan..?
