  • Just be wary that they won't let you get the expensive ones, just the WD Elements and the Maxtor one. They told me that's all I was allowed to choose from, even though the catalogue doesn't specify which models.

      According to the ad http://catalogues.harveynorman.com.au/portal/offerdetails/external_hard_drive/1186513591513?CatalogueID=1186510445287&No=15&Nner=15&tab=list&Ns=OfferOnPage|0&N=1998&source=productlist
It mentions both the WD and Maxtor model numbers. So it seems like it was meant for just those two.

OW pricematched this for me making it 169 inc 5% off

Well HN Chatswood are all out of the WD Elements, but they still have plenty of the Maxtors.

OW Artarmon still show it as $199 on the shelf, but when scanned its the same price as HN, ie.$178. So no more price match with 5% discount. Someone at OW must have picked up on this. They started to do the pricematch until they scanned the item. Bummer!

Still, OW Artarmon has plenty of these on the shelf, and at $178 is still a bargain if you're looking for massive storage in a small USB-based form factor.

  • Officeworks Sydney city would not price match this yesterday - ended up buying one in the Sydney CBD HN store for $175 with a few other things.

  • Picked 2 up from OW in Commercial Rd Prahran, Victoria at $178each. Very happy with the buy :-)

  • I bought a WDC 1TB at OW QV for $169 on Tuesday after the price match and discount during lunch time. HN QV was out of the Maxtor Basics and WDC Elements. When I got back to the office I rechecked the website, OW changed the price to match.

I read that the Elements HDD does not spin down when idle (correct me if I am wrong), so I returned it the same day. The checkout chick doing the return was confused why I got it at a lower price since when she scanned the item, it showed $178! Anyways, it got returned.

I want to leave it connected to the notebook permanently but since it would keep spinning and in the summer heat, that would not be good. Saw on the WDC website that it will not self power down even if the PC is turned off (Again correct me if yours does), only MyBook Essentials and above will. The spindown software for the Elements drive was last updated in 2004 and I am running Vista, so was a bit worried there.

I went Harvey Norman Knox City on Wednesday and got the Maxtor Basic (Their last one) but only opened the package today. I found out it will spin down after 15 minutes of inactivity after testing it myself. There is no software for the Maxtor Basic Desktop to change the spin down time but at least it does spin down. My 500GB FreeAgent1 Desktop spin down after 3 minutes of inactivity.

Earlier today, I wanted to get the 1TB FA1 Desktop for $199 at DSE Knox City and maybe return the Maxtor as I thought it wouldn't spin down. DSE Knox City said what they had were 3 faulty 1TB FA1 Desktops. I wished they would not show faulty stock as available stock on the DSE website. The FA2 are going for $249.
