Seems we don't really post these due to Australia's network situation but I believe it should work and it has such good specs/price. Reasoning:

  • Own a Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE has been working fine on BOOST from 2022.
  • Is Global ROM
  • JB has the older 13 for $150 more than this.

Pros:

  • Cheaper by $100 than last seen of these phones on Ozb.
  • Snapdragon, has e-sim, nice battery with super fast charging.

Cons:

  • Has bloatware. Probs will flash with xiaomi.eu ROM. Google wallet still might be dodgy.
  • Camera is kinda mid from reviews.

Don't forget the cashback from cashrewards!
See clears posts on using USD to pay with a card without FX fees/charges.

BUYER BEWARE:

I also had a Redmi Note 9 before my Xiaomi 11 Lite, that i had to replace due to the Oz Network changes. So, there's a (low imo) chance this might get blacklisted.

⚠️IMPORTANT NOTICE

Do they work? I think the requirement is that they able to call emergency on 4g rather than the typical revert to 3g/2g when calling emergency

    • I think I read somewhere that Telstra are being quite aggressive with their approach to bans too, so even if they meet the requirements, they may not work unless Telstra decides to whitelist them? - someone can correct me if I'm mistaken

      • +1

I can confirm that a Telstra Smart 4, which is a ZTE Blade A31 from memory, when unlocked still can't connect to optus, despite it being able to call emergency. Optus won't whielist it and Telstra says it's Optus' problem.

I have also got an old Huawei Vodafone prepaid which upon being unlocked won't connect to Telstra, yet I can make emergency calls with no sim card in it. Seems like a basket case of IMEI banning.

      • I dont think any one company knows what they are doing and they all appear to have their own blacklist.

My Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite was banned by Belong, I moved to Boost and it has worked ever since, both are MVNO's owned by Telstra.

Also had a GL.Inet pauli hotspot banned that is incapable of making phone calls

    • Have added my reasoning to the post

    • +2

Ambiguous as always, buy at your own risk mentality, not worth gambling your $537, and not sure why soo many upvotes.

      • Agreed. I got my order and it works!

  • +13

What makes you think it's going to work? Please provide your evidence. I have a Redmi Note 13 (can't remember exactly which model) bought a couple of months before the change and it's now a brick, even though the same model was sold at JB Hifi. IMEI was in the "working" list, but mine doesn't work.

    • Did you get a refund from JB?

      • To clarify, I bought my Redmi Note 13 from AliExpress. Also have a a Redmi Note 11 from AliExpress (bought from a different AliExpress seller than the Redmi Note 13) that has continued to work.

        • +9

Are you sure the Note 13 is a brick still? Many were blocked for a month and then unblocked. My wife's Redmi Note 13 Pro + 5G works fine.

          • +1

@Iggemo: Tested about a month ago with the same Optus re-seller sim that I've been using for years, and it didn't work. Tried again with partner's same Optus re-seller sim and still doesn't work.

Interestingly, as per comments below, I've ported to Boost in the last couple of weeks, and my Boost sim does work in the Redmi Note 13.

Also, checked the IMEI prefix on the Optus website as per another comment below. The page claims the device is not blocked, yet does not work with a Optus re-seller.

            • @iamnotafish: Weird. My wife's phone is with Coles Mobile which is also Optus and it never had an issue.

          • @Iggemo: Same here.

I bought my Redmi Note 13 Pro last year and it's never failed me

        • My 13 Pro + 5G was working fine with Telstra and Vodafone.
It did not work with Optus, but there was a trick where I put the SIM in a working phone first and then put it back in the 13 Pro + 5G and it worked, albeit until I put it into Aeroplane mode! Also always worked with WoWifi mode on Optus.

    • +7

Use either BOOST or Telstra SIM, then it is going to work.

      • +1

Huh… interesting… I was on an Optus re-seller, but recently ported to Boost. I'll give it a go.

By the way, has anyone had any luck in unlocking the bootloader in a Redmi Note 13 or later so the phone can be rooted?

        • +5

It is doable, I know Redmi note 12 turbo with HyperOs can be unlocked, but there are caveats with unlocked bootloader or rooted phones. GPAY is the most common one if you rely on it.

        • +5

Just tested my Redmi Note 13 again… Boost sim works, Optus re-seller sim still doesn't work.

          • @iamnotafish: I tried nearly all the SIM i can find early this year, Telstra obviously is the most friendly to China branded phones, Optus some YES and some no. Vodafone seemed to blocked the registration occasionally, so you may get signal in the morning and everything ok, but suddenly in the afternoon no signal at all. If you call them, they may spend you a few hours troubleshooting to prove they are innocent and then I gave up

    • +12

I have a Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G that works perfectly fine using Woolworths Everyday Mobile Prepaid.
      Mine was purchased from Aliexpress.

    • +8

      I have Redmi Note 13 Pro 5g.
      Works with zero issues.

      • Me too, excellent phone

    • It works mate just need to use Telstra or Vodafone network.

    • +2

I have the same phone and it's perfect. Global rom. Try this: set region to Singapore. Then set back to Australia. Things that were locked like esim support suddenly unlocked when I did this.

    • Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+: is $500 worth the risk…what action can potential-buyers take to minimise the risk, ie full-access to Telstra/Optus/Vodafone mobile-network, rather than relying on comments by OzBargainers/forums/internet?

What's so compelling about this phone? https://www.notebookcheck.net/Xiaomi-Redmi-Note-14-Pro-5G-re…

    • Have added my reasoning to the post

no evidence as always, many upvotes to give peer pressure to buy, waste your time later on testing, not working, returning, etc.

Xiaomi have lost, they were really the pioneers on fringe phones and pushing the status quo fan base until they gave into apple and Samsungs cool aid, the only exception is their electric cars and home appliances, even oppo now have better offerings.

Hay don't hate the preacher hate the teacher.

    • +3

      Xiaomi have lost

Xiaomi are still good, as they make the most value-for-money phones, for me.

You should check out the Huawei products,…and then say Apple and Samsung have lost to them.

The Huawei Pura range is great, except that you got to run their own OS on them. Boo.

      • +2

I think the Huawei OS is very similar to Andoid, even though the google packages are not installed from the original phone, i still managed to get Google store installed. One key issue is that it will only work with Telstea and Boost

      • +1

Can't America has demonised Huawei, the only two contenders are oppo and redmi that's it.

Picture Aussie broadband as Xiaomi and buddy Telco as redmi same company same service just different parent.

The only phone for me is the one I can repair, cheap while avoiding oleds.

      • +4

They used to be value for money but not any more. They have bumped up their prices like anything in the past few years whilst offering middling specs and poor cameras.

        • +1

I wasn't buying the phones for their specs nor their cameras, haha…
…as I had prioritized dual-SIM, microSD and 3.5mm stereo-jack (or even the IR port).

Nowadays, it's getting harder to find a well-specc'd phone with a 3.5mm jack too, so which points to music listening via Bluetooth (or a USB-C dongle).

Then, with Jack Dorsey's latest chat app - BitChat, which only relies on Bluetooth,…and it makes me wonder, if these are just ploys just to always have a person's Bluetooth always switched on their phone, as a way to scan for surrounding devices, for "agencies" etc.

    • my experience with a cheap oppo phone back then was bad since it had locked bootloader etc and i couldnt unlock it

    • I mean we can say that about every phone manufacturer nowadays. But I still like the Xiaomi designs (blatant apple copy) and price points still.

  • +8

    I'd seriously recommend against these.

If you can be SURE it's loaded with an international ROM and that it's compatible with the Telstra 5G specific wavelengths, then you might be OK,

I have two (one each for my missus and myself) 13 PRO models that came with the Chinese ROM and the bootloader is locked tighter than a nun's nasty - you cannot reflash no matter what you do.

Ive had to dump the Redmis and go Motorola.

Pity, ive been using Xiaomi Redmi Notes for years now - they have traditionally supplied good spec phones at a good price. However they've now royally screwed the pooch as far as I'm concerned.

    • +1

This one is the global version, should be fine on Telstra and Vodafone, though Optus who knows.

    • +13

Your sentences need a cold shower.

      • +1

Your sentence needs a gold star ⭐️

    • +3

      I have Redmi Note 13 Pro 5g.
      Global rom. Zero issues

    • Hmm, I wasn't aware at all that there are compatibility issues with the Xiaomi phones. I have 13T Pro which I purchased from Thailand, traveled 3 months across Australia with a Telstra prepaid sim and had no issues.

      • +2

You didn't have issues, because you used a Telstra SIM.

People have reported issues on Optus (and sometimes Vodafone), with Chinese-manufactured phones, since the 3G "shutdown" from October 2024.

        • +3

Can confirm. I bought a Poco F7 Pro and it works fine on Boost/Telstra and Vodafone but if I put an Optus SIM in there it doesn't work.

    • Agree have added some more info into post

    • Update: I got my order and it works!

  • +4

I would stay clear from this model. TAC checked info from Whirlpool, Chinese rom works with Optus (no to Telstra) while the global ROM works with Telstra (no to Optus). Unknown from Vodafone - may be same status as Telstra.

    • -2

I would stay away from Optus and Vodafone instead.

      Boost FTW!

    • I am sticking with BOOST

  • +8

I just don't see the need for Xiaomi nowadays with discounted Motorolas being so competitive, even if the network side is fine. Why pay $500 for a slight camera upgrade and modem upgrade when you can get full Australian warranty for $300 to $350?

Especially when they closed down the ability to unlock bootloader in Chinese Rom devices. The global one will follow. From experience, Miui is very inconsistent in its QC. The only consistent thing about it is that if there's a bug, it can take almost a year for Xiaomi to fix. And the aggressive ram management doesn't really save that much battery, really.

    • +11

The need is very simple, these phones still offer some really great hardware for the price, there isn't a single Motorola or any other brand in Aus anywhere close to these specs within this price range, you would need to shell out another $350-400 or more to get similar specs.

      • +1

Compared to the Motorola 50 fusion, a phone constantly at $350, for extra $150, you get:

        HDR10+ screen

        Slightly better cameras

        Dolby credited stereo speakers

        Bluetooth 5.4

I wouldn't say the Xiaomi prices for hardware is unmatched ever since Motorola had also tried to compete with them in the Indian market. Especially when you get nothing for service, even in china, and an inconsistent software, and barely any discounts as they still rely on flash sales for their lower margin products, I honestly don't see the appeal anymore.

        • +5

You're forgetting about the SoC which for the 14 pro+ is running the snapdragon 7 gen 3 whilst the 50 fusion is a gen behind, not to mention any 12/512gb version will still cost you more than this would currently and it's a year old, one could also get an X7 Pro for similar price with even better SoC though lesser camera.

Show me one deal right now in Aus with better hardware for the same price, hell show me one deal even close to these specs with this price, you can't because it doesn't exist hence why I said the needs are simple because some people are willing to forego the warranty risks etc to get good hardware at a cheaper price.

          • -3

@SherLock55: Nobody really cares anymore about the "Snapdragon SoC".

Mowadays most phones can run most apps, games etc.

            • @clandestino: Its not just about running apps though, power consumption in a mobile is important and some chips are less efficient.

            • -1

@clandestino: SD SoC is important for those wanting to go custom rom route

            • @clandestino: i don’t look at soc, look at screen size and quality and bluetooth version, other than that they all seem to run the same apps, have never had an app say not compatible with this soc or not enough ram, etc.

          • @SherLock55: Oh I didn't pay attention to the memory and the SoC. Yeah, you're right, my bad.

Idk. I guess I don't notice those things anymore? The phones no longer have a headphone jack, so no point storing RAWS, hence I don't care about storage anymore. And thanks to Miui, the efficiency from the better battery and higher ram will get negated anyways. I remember the Redmi note 13 pro being one of the lowest battery when simply browsing in reviews.

i can see the appeal of the poco though. I helped a few friends in buying one myself. They were inconsistent in being accepted by network, despite all being global rom from goldway HK and Xiaomi store.

        • i enjoy my everything about my xiaomi devices minus the poor battery life and or the phone heating up when doing light tasks but besides that it's mostly good

and not having eSim/microSD is kinda eh as well

          • @AeymothSky: I don't get how Xiaomi managed to remove the tiger security thing from their rom, yet their rom still drains battery AND clears ram aggressively even when you turn it down + debloat. They already have their own store, and have ads, yet their phone runs like as though the same spywares from 2016 are still in it.

            • @Wonderfool: yeah.

i don't know if it's due to the high end cpu that's in my devices or not but I'm sure other companies with the same CPU don't have such issues.

I even run xiaomi eu rom on my mi11i and now these days it doest even last 18 hrs on standby unplugged.

      • +1

Great Hardware is useless if IMEI is blocked after a few months

  • +2

Does it have NFC and BAND28? Doesn't see anything on sellers specs page.

    • Also wondering

    • I do see NFC in a picture in description and I'm mostly going off gsmarena for band 28

      • +1

They can be very different by region or variants. Similar to eSim capability

        • true im going off the other specs towards the global variant

          • +1

@pathway27: Which unfortunately is not homogeneous. A global variant sold in Europe is different to Global in Singapore especially between Bands, NFC, battery capacity/charging, eSim etc. They specifically write on their website that these are region dependent despite being Global version.

      • +1

I like to go off Kimovil for bands, they seem to have a note regarding b28a/b

Me and the misses had ~ 6 Xiaomi phones between us. Last two years moved to pixel.

We had so many smashed Xiaomi screens it's not funny, haven't broken the pixel once after 2 years (could be the quadlock case)

    • +6

how …. often are you dropping your phones?

I've used Xiaomi for 5-6 years and never broken a screen, despite dropping them a handful of times

    • +2

I have 13T pro and it fell off when cycling at high speed 3 times. Every time I thought the phone is gone, but it survived intact. The screen protector was totally smashed, I've gone through 4 screen protectors so far. 13T Pro is a higher spec phone, gorilla glass 5 and IP68. I have it in a shockproof case. The phone traveled with me on a bicycle 10000km in the last 12 months, so plenty of abuse.

      • The phone traveled with me on a bicycle 10000km in the last 12 months

Wow…that's much more than how much I drive a car in a year !

        • +1

That's a part of my job spec now….I've retired last year. Now I usually spend around 2 months per calendar year In Australia, resupplying, health checks, etc. Having a phone is extremely important to me, and I usually travel with 3 phones, one primary and 2 secondary, as sometimes I have up to 6 active sim cards. That's why I did quite a bit of research before buying the 13T Pro. It has its issues as everything else, the battery started fading, and sometimes overheats on video. However it stays alive, and that's the main thing which matters to me. The other phones I carry are Huawei Mate 30 pro, and old Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, this is due to be replace with brand new Motorola G75 from the last Good Guys deal.

          • +2

@trekbound: Very happy with my g75, I'm using it right now and also got it for $260 from The Good Guys. Only complaint is the camera, very poor in low light conditions.

I've got a Xiaomi Poco F3 bought in 2022 from AliExpress that's been bricked by the 3G shutdown and now sitting in the drawer. Otherwise in perfectly good working order. Won't be buying another Xiaomi

            • @Kelpei:

Only complaint is the camera, very poor in low light conditions

That's the hallmark of a Motorola phone.
Excellent stock Android experience, physically robust phones,
and bang-for-buck features EXCEPT their cameras are lacklustre.

bricked by the 3G shutdown and now sitting in the drawer

You can use those phones overseas, for travel purposes,
or donate them to someone overseas, as they can still use it.

Furthermore, you can use those "bricked" phones,
for banking or testing purposes, on a home WiFi network.

    • +2

I've had my poco x3 NFC since new. Dropped it probably 100 times or so, varying heights, worst damage to date is scratches on glass from sand or rocks

    Device is NOT Blocked
Great news, based on the number you entered, the REDMI NOTE 14 PRO+ 5G device has not been identified as having compatibility issues and is not blocked from accessing the Optus mobile network. Advice is current as of 14/07/2025 and is subject to change. If you are having connection issues, it might be for other reasons. Contact your service provider or your device manufacturer for technical assistance.

    • Thanks good info

  • +6

I would caution against these Chinese phones simply due to the network situation potentially just turning it into a brick (or a device with no cellular access). It's a gamble whether or not they'll work, and if there will be workaround it. It also might work for now, but who knows in the future? There's no transparency on the logic or schedule of the banned phone list by networks.

I had a Huawei Mate 20 Pro which was blocked from network access and it became a huge headache. Luckily, there was a workaround it by updating the OS , but I was dependent on the Whirlpool forums, and learning bizarre tips like backdating my PC prior to updating it.

I believe Chinese brand phones are often great value, however I'm concerned that they can be randomly subject at anytime to the paranoid whims from Governmental regulation imposing on our network carriers. There's currently a lot of fear in the west/US, regarding how fast and advanced China-based technology is becoming (i.e. AI and EVs), and that sentiment could potentially bleed over into more device bans.

    • +2

Would be great if people joined the fight against the shut down and contacted their respective MPs. I was probably one of ten people that wrote a report (about a 10 page document), mine being on why the shutdown is bad for everyone. The nine others were probably reports from the telcos saying why the shutdown is good…
