I wouldn't think to buy anything above $5 from kogan these days

      • how come, can i ask?

        Just because he is Russian?

        • +19

This is a bit much I would say. Just because he's Russian it doesn't mean he's all in for war against Ukraine.

When America attacked Iraq and various other countries? Where was everyone to boycott American products?

When Israel kills Palestines on the regular why didn't everyone boycott Israel?

          Double standards. And grow up.

          • +1

@itsmoe: The more you dig into history the more crazy things you will find. Vikings were known to explore. Spanish and Portuguese did their thing, with reigns hiring immigrants to explore and steal! The Dutch had an empire, so did the French. Japan got invaded twice by the Chinese. 70% of the USA once belonged to the French. Even Alaska got purchased by the US. Once there were mass migrations these people suddenly feel discriminated against. Some humans just need to be a part of a big flock. Call it the herd effect. Can be seen typically at sport events.
Putin is your typical lone wolf. His third wife is far away and he thinks he owes it to Russia to rebuild the biggest empire.
Then of course the U$ rules the world. Google rules the internet. Bezos wants to rule e-commerce. If one herd gets too large the rest of the world should be concerned.

          • @itsmoe: Plenty tried to boycott US… they protested and opposed the Vietnam war… plenty are opposed to war, no left right bias… people have been refusing or at least trying not to buy US for decades.

Wealthy Russians are legitimate targets of governments right now… to put pressure on Putin. Sanctions and various hardships have been placed on wealthy Russians already.

If you care to look it up, we attacked Iraq when we put Saddam in power, in the 80s.. He then attacked Kuwait and the west dealt with him… and then the job on Saddam was finished but the nation messed right up by Jnr.

            • @Tuba: That's what I'm saying, Saddam was put in power with the US approval, when he decided to spread his wings to fly, the'sy shut him down and close a million civilian have died with him and still dying till today.

The average person doesn't know what's happening around them or what or who their neighbours are let alone know what's happening in another country and why, but now with the internet they all feel like they have to have a say in things and they think they are now specialised in politics.

Makes me sick. I feel like the internet needs to be reset.

        • Well he's not Russian anyway…

          • +3

            @DogGunn: He's definitely Ruslan.

            • @WatchNerd: Been in a hurry for years.

              Wiki says hes Belarusian

            • @WatchNerd: You know you can look this up, right?

              He's definitely NOT Russian.

              • @DogGunn: Belarus is a Russian ally in this thing…

                • @Tuba: Great. But that doesn't make him Russian lol

                  • @DogGunn: Nor does it mean he would be in favor of invasions if he was Russian… or as a Belarusian, or Australian.

Worth noting, the person that said wouldnt go near his stuff >$5, never said it was because he was Russian someone else concluded that…

                    • @Tuba:

Nor does it mean he would be in favor of invasions if he was Russian… or as a Belarusian, or Australian.

I agree - I never suggested it did. As I said in reply to payless69 asking is it because he is Russia: "Well he's not Russian anyway…"

                        • @Tuba: Don't get the point of your comment, but okay.

                          • @DogGunn: The name Russian, comes from their roots.. and they are all, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia etc, Rus. Its in the name… Belarus…

I thought we were running away with it…

                      • +3

@[Deactivated]: Apple stays in China because they have the best programmers (not the cheapest). Apple is nothing without programmers.
They will lead in AI & most technology anyway as the US fails with protectionism & military ahead of human focus (dragging AU puppets with it).

              • @taki:

Apple stays in China because they have the best programmers (not the cheapest).

Do you have credible sources for this? AFAIK most of their RND is in the US, China is not really known for its worldwide achievements in the software engineering area. They are known for bad work practices (massive overtime requirements for example), leading to quite poor results quality-wise.

          • +4

@superidiculous: all the major/expensive components of their flagships arent Chinese (panels, memory, storage, processor, probably battery cells).

it's about as far you can get.

I certainly wouldn't put it as "most"

          • @superidiculous: Quite a small part of the profit from the Samsung or Apple phones sales stays in China compared to other countries. You can't avoid buying phones without Chinese parts but you can at least choose the not Chinese brands.

Why people make it big deal.

China is at economic war with Australia, I'd not support them, especially when better alternatives are easily available.

            • +2

@DmytroP: Absolutely, at some point consumers have to vote with their wallets… send a message… instead of just going along with whatever happens for convenience.

Design in Korea, assembled in Vietnam with Chinese parts.

          • @salin: Add: with partly Western investors.

          • +2

@salin: Processor, Chipset, Display, Camera Module and Battery are all South Korean in Samsung. Only little bits and pieces are Chinese probably.

            • -1

@dealhunter52: all the materials used to made those Processor, Chipset, Display, Camera Module and Battery are from China.

            • @dealhunter52: Too much Western propaganda is not healthy. At the moment all is far from the truth.
You have to get used to the change of world order. Japan was like China of say 20 years ago when was starting, then took over the US (only to be bullied to stagnation). Then came S. Korea & now China is taking over all (due to size & better planning).
In < decade it will be the greatest power & AU to survive will have to be puppet to China, not US.

    • I think @ehardaway is asking if this ships with Google Play Store installed.

    • +1

It's obviously a true blue, dinky di, made in the land down under, tech device. Just like every other piece of tech you've got in your home.

  • Hmmm. Tossing up between this and Poco F3 also available on Banggood for an additional $60. Mainly use phone for social media, video streaming and music just general daily usage no gaming really. Don't really care about Camera specs as long as its decent. Battery the big factor for me but both here seem to have the same battery size. Any thoughts?

    • +2

Both should pretty much acheive the same results for your use case. Might as well go for this since it's cheaper.

    • +3

      https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=11101&idPhone…
Poco has a faster refresh rate screen, you wont care. Poco has slighter better cpu, you wont care. This is 38 grams lighter, I WOULD certainly care…..so over heavy phones.
Oh, and this has a micro sd slot, more music.

    • +1

      This deal.
Mid-range SOC likely generates less heat and uses less battery.
90Hz refresh rate is plenty too.

    • Important to note that a lot of people will tell you that extra power isn't necessary if you're not doing anything heavy with it (such as ur situation). However, most also disregard the fact that additional power will feel far snappier throughout your overall usage. Whilst both this phone and the poco f3 may perform similarly out of the box, after a few weeks or months, you'll definitely notice a faster drop in performance from the 11 lite 5G.
Also good to remember that powerful phones will have far longer longevity, the poco will be guaranteed last longer in the long term if that's an important factor to you. Aside from that, both are practically identical, the poco f3 has 120 Hz, compared to 90 for this device but that's a minor difference and I don't believe there's should be a huge difference (though 60hz to 120hz is a big difference).
Cameras should also be practically identical to each other, they will get the job done nicely.
Personally, I'd see and wait for a poco F3 deal comes around, they're relatively common and you can't really go wrong with a performance at that price range.

      • you'll definitely notice a faster drop in performance from the 11 lite 5G.

Why? Do you think the cpu will degrade? It makes no sense.

        • +1

Could be a mix of installing more apps, thus more background tasks, and updates adding new features that require more power.

          • @reloxation: Ok, that makes some sense. Im always keeping my background tasks in control, but know some wouldnt do that.
But I still dont see it really on a phone of those specs. Ive installed heaps on my poco x3 nfc and havent noticed anything.

        • Basically what reloxation said. In the long term, it's a pretty safe bet to assume that apps and tasks will require more power. Future updates generally work better with newer/ more powerful processors since they should be better equipt to handle it. Everything becomes obsolete however more recent and/ or powerful chips will take longer to experience a drop in performance. A pretty normal thing for about every phone processor.
I think CPU degradation is logically also a think but I doubt its significant enough for anyone to notice or care lol.

    • +2

Go for the lighter option. I wasn't impressed with my Poco 3X NFC, I've switched to a Motorola now and despite the crappy camera it's better in every way

      • +2

Jealous ;P I have a Poco x3 nfc and its nice and all but the weight totally ruins it for me. Seriously thinking of trying to sell it and get something else.

        • +1

I went from the Poco X3 NFC to the Edge 20 Fusion that was on sale at $279 and the form factor is basically identical but feels like only 70% the weight. So much nicer to handle

          • +1

            @scottySK: Likewise ☺️

          • @scottySK: I also have a Poco X3 NFC. The perceived comfort given the huge size really depends on the size of one's hands. I think it's a perfect size for my hands.
As for the weight, it's also ok. You need to consider that X3's frame is made of real metal as opposed to other Xiaomi phones that have a plastic frame. Of course they're lighter with all that plastic in and around it!

I'd rather have a solid (aka heavy) phone than a plastic toy any time.

            • @vrsac: I have XL hands so the size is great, I'd never go back to smaller screens. The weight is fatiguing when holding it in certain ways, for example my pinky finger takes 90% the weight when I'm swipe typing with one hand, so I'd rather a lighter phone in that instance

    • Sounds like you're about to spend too much on a phone. A $200-$300 phone meets all your requirements

  • Great buy for the price, I still like my Oppo reno 5G

  • +1

Purchased. This is my second smartphone. My current one is 5 years old and many apps don't work anymore. Thanks.

    • Which key apps don't work anymore?
      7 11 is one.

      • +1

The bike and scooter apps, many of the fast-food chains, government apps to sign into places.

        • Just curious but what was your phone and what version of Android was it running?

          • +1

            @ozhunter68: I believe it's a Huawei Honor 4x. Android version 4.4.2

            • @bailbondsh: Wow, that model was released 7 1/2 years ago, and after 5 years of use still running, that's a sign of a good phone.

They were pretty decent and running an older version of Android with 2gb of ram would have kept it running ok.

How is the battery, did you replace that or not? You will be super happy and impressed with your new Xiaomi :-)

          • +1

@ozhunter68: crap looks like i've found a way to update the andorid version

            • @bailbondsh: Give it a try, you might get one or more apps working again after all. Still good as a backup phone in case you …

    • +1

is it due to Android version? have you tried to upgrade? missus has a 5 years old xiaomi and no issues with any apps.

      • I believe it's a Huawei Honor 4x. Android version 4.4.2. Never seems to update from the official app of the phone….

      • +1

crap looks like i've found a way to update the andorid version

        • Give it a try, you might get one or more apps working again. Still good as a backup phone in case you ….

          • @ozhunter68: Doesn't seem to be able to update Android

            • +1

@bailbondsh: Oh well, at least you gave it a go. If you feel like reading specific blogs for an hour or more for that model,

at least you have a nice new phone on the way and can still use your old working phone as back up.

              • +1

@ozhunter68: Yep i'll try and learn some things about this model. Good idea

                • @bailbondsh: Good on ya. Sometimes fun and challenging, especially when you get rewarded with a win at the end (sometimes lol)

                  • @ozhunter68: I remember spending like whole days trying to figure out computer problems back in the day, not as many problems these days, kind of nostalgic, i'm no closer to working out this Android problem after reading for a while lol, i'm gonna take a break for a while

  • +2

Cool my Samsung S9+ is dying and was looking for a replacement. I reckon this will perform about the same. Thanks dude.

    • +1

Haha, just purchased a refurbished as new Samsung G S9+ for a gift for my mum replacing her still good S G S8+.

Hope it will still run ok for her for a few years.

      • +1

I'm sure it will dude, I was actually about to take the plunge on a refurb s10+ before this deal came up. No need to upgrade if the only thing that is giving you issues is the battery.

        • Oh, is that all that's wrong with your S9+, the battery giving you issues when you said "my S9+is dying"?

The memory and CPU as well as overall smoothnes of phone all still good after a 2/3+ years of use I hope?

My mum has been using her S8+ now into her 3rd year and still running ok. She is only a medium user and I

have tried to teach her good battery management not letting battery go below 20% and not charging it over 90%

where possible ( and if you remember haha ), so even her battery is still ok too.

          • @ozhunter68: My s10e battery not getting through a day. Some apps are slow to load. Do you think it's worth upgrading to this?

            • @dajackal: Have you tried doing a full factory data reset and only installing the apps you need to see if any improvements

are there. Maybe also set certain apps not to run in the background and only when you open to see if that

makes any difference. The S10 e should still be running pretty fast and smooth when set up right, battery can

              be another matter.

              • +1

@ozhunter68: I'm at 37% battery at 10am. God save me!
Thanks for the suggestions. Will give it a go.

                • +1

@dajackal: Yeah, unless you have been hammering playing games since 6am or heavy camera usage, appart from

contantly re-charging phone via charger or powerbank, a replacement battery or phone might be on the way.

          • +1

@ozhunter68: @ozhunter68 I assume it's the battery. The charge drains very fast and it can no longer be charged in any meaningful way via wired charging - only wireless. Otherwise the phone works fine, I'll keep it as a backup.

            • +1

@AlanHB: Sounds about right. Mighr even be the chargin circiut playing up, so might not really be worth

taking a gamble and getting a new battery.
