Sweet. Though my local bakers delight closed down :(

    • +7

Their bread is too expensive. Can't survive with a lot of cheaper Chinese and Vietnamese bakeries offering alternatives.

Also, on the top result for Baker's Delight Google search:
      http://www.bakersdlies.com/

That site says this for me:

        Download Error!
This site has gone over its daily download limit. Please try again later

What kind of modern web host has a daily download limit? It's like Geocities all over again. ಠ_ಠ

Just spent the last hour or so reading through some of the stories on there. Makes me think I never want to shop there again, but then that's only going to hurt the franchisees even more. Terrible company.

        • +1

i have spent the last hour reading bakers delight lies as well. Horrible to read but by not supporting the franchisees it will make it even worse for them :(

        • +2

Well worth the read that website, particularly as a solicitor having dealt with a couple of franchising disputes.

Virtually all the clients that I have had that have taken on a franchise have regretted it. There are some franchises that have genuine goodwill associated with their brand - McDonalds would be a prime example - but often I think clients take on these things because they are intimidated by the prospect of trying to succeed as an independent business and they like the sound of someone else manning the phones/doing the admin/taking care of the pointless busywork for them.

One thing that stuck out for me from reading those stories are the mentions of "free seminars". This reminds me of the Gold Coast in the 1990s when free "property seminars" were offered to impressionable wannabe property tycoons.

I would have no problem with them beefing up the Franchising Code of Conduct to provide for better disclosure. There are disclosure requirements in the existing code but no standard forms so franchisors tend to prepare their own disclosure statements, which tend to be less than transparent.

        • couldn't agree more, i was horrified to read some of those stories, i wont be shopping there again.

      • Yes, FAR too expensive for what is generally bread+topping.

As an aside, I've known 6-8 people who worked there and said it was one of the worst jobs they ever had. BD seems to have a habit of having the worst managers in existence. No wonder some of them have trouble operating a franchise.

        • Can't be a bad job if you get free bread at the end of the day!!!!

      • have to neg this deal after reading the horror stories on that website

      • Hmm, those stories are not good. I will give BD a miss in future.

So would you like to suggest a law which forces non-Australian businesses to close during Australia day. This might help this giant Australian chain to compete against local businesses.

        • +2

So those Chinese and Vietnamese local bakeries are non-Australian? Wash your mouth out!

    • -3

      Cause of Broden

    • Why is bakers delight stuff so expensive compare to a chinese bakery? it's all the same flour.
I think their mark up is just too high, need a better business plan!
I still think chinese bakery stuff is a bit much at times compare to how much it cost for me to make it at home, there's no way I'd go near a bakers delight.

      • Franchised chinese bakeries can charge a lot too. It's something to do with the fact that franchisees have to pay licensing fees plus the initial (and very costly) start up fees to the business.

Look at BreadTop and 85 Degrees. They charge $2.50 to $3 bucks for a bun with topping/fillings. The ingredients and manpower required to produce the bun probably doens't even cost up to a $1 to make.

      • Because there are people willing to pay high prices for flour, water and a garnish that's supposedly a filling in bun full of air. Definitely room in the market for a baker that doesn't just copy the crap products others make.

cheeseburger from maccas, scroll from BD
gonna have a whole australia day meal soon

    • McDonalds, Vegemite…. you mean an whole "American meal" soon.

      • +7

whilst waving a cheap plastic australian flag that says "made in china"

      • But Vegemite is Aussie though.

        • +5

          was aussie
          american owned now

        • Doesn't mean the product is American. Hell, Americans still pay more for Vegemite, which they have to import from us.

        • +5

Control of the Vegemite Brand and Kraft's profits go to the USA.

Whether you like Dick Smith (the person) or not have a read of what he has to say about the 'mite' brands here http://www.dicksmithfoods.com.au/ozemite-story

        • I did know that Dick was making foods that were wholly Australian made and owned, but didn't know he had made an alternative to Vegemite…well like that guy who was interviewed, I'll have to try it first.

Thanks for the link though, interesting read :)

        • A US company owning the brand Vegemite doesn't impact on our national sovereignty. You know vegemite was 'invented' through what pretty much now days would be called a scam. Its the by product of beer, they packed it full of salt and labelled it a health food to sell it.

That being said, I love it

        • +1

Isn't Dick Smith the same guy that created a store called "Dick Smith", you know the electronics store and sold it to Woolworths which then sold it to a multinational… I haven't put too much faith in his concern for the Australian public.

        • I don't really care which head honcho gets the big profit, I care who gets employed and it's still Australians. Still I must say all business practice dodgy tactics not just Dick Smith it's just part of staying or getting ahead and if OzEmite and Vegemite were the same price I would definitely support good ol' dick.

        • Yes he sold it to Australian Woolworths in 1980-1982. Dick Smiths was only 20 stores then and Woolworths not the behemoth it is today. The level or multinational ownership within Australia paled compared today and wasn't as much of a threat. A lot has happened in 30 years.

      • Didn't 7-Eleven give away a free can of Coke last year?

Nice find, but I think it's more common to provide a link to the brand's Facebook page or website highlighting the bargain, rather than a link to another deals site :)

That said here's a link to their Facebook page, seems a little light on info at the moment but I suspect they'll add some more information later in the week

        • +19

          He already did.

      • cool story bro

  • Radio ad says this is limited to first 200 at each store I believe. Doesn't say it on their website though.

  • now all we need to find is a free cold beer to wash it down.

      • +3

        Drink Coopers!

      • Really? i thought Carton, crown, vb, Jame Boag, toohey are made by foster which is Australian company. So whom own them ????
Australian don't own lands, foods. … beers, not even the ore are digging up … so what do we own …

        • Fosters is no longer Australian.

It is owned by UK SABMiller
          http://www.fostersgroup.com/about/sabmiller.aspx

James Boag, just like Tooheys, is owned by Lion Nathan which is in turn owned by Kirin (Japanese), a division of Japan's Mitsubishi group.

Not so Tasmanian anymore is it?

So is this all a problem? Lots of people like imported beer. That is fine and there are some great beers (especially from Belgium!) BUT if you buy these "Aussie Beers" and think they are 'Aussie' then you're being misled.

        • -1

They all bloody taste the same anyway. It irritates the hell out of me that people get so passionate about commercial lager, its like arguing over different brands of white bread.

Hell, I'll drink beer, but I don't pretend that better beer comes out of a giant stainless steel vat just because it is parked in a particular location.

        • +1

Wrong, they do not all taste the same and neither does white bread actually, and it is a darn lot more different than "where the vat is located"

Ingredients, ratios, brewing methods, brewing times, quality, strength etc. all differ and the differences matter.

I am not a big beer person, and some I can't stand, but some I really like.

If there was no difference I would either like or hate them all.

        • Sure, and a wine aficionado will swear up and down that a $200 bottle of Bordeaux is better than $20 Chilean plonk. Unfortunately, blind taste tests have proven time and time again that most people can't tell the difference.

          Its the same with beer:-
          http://itu.dk/people/petermeldgaard/B12/lektion%206/Influenc…

Ingredients? Most pale lagers (ie just about every Australian beer) contain malt, water and hops. If its a pilsener, it might contain rice or corn to mellow out the flavour, but even a modest change such as this is a bit too much to ask of the Australian beer market, which generally insists on bland homogeneity.

Note: I'm not talking about beer generally (ie, stout, pale ale, Yorkshire bitter, etc). There is genuine variation amongst English beers, for example. I am talking about pale lager.

        • "If its a pilsener, it might contain rice or corn to mellow out the flavour" - That's where I stopped reading.

          :))))))))))))))))))

        • Yes. Tsingtao, Budweiser, Jupiler, etc - all of them Pilseners, all of them contain rice or corn malt to produce a lighter beer than if made with barley malt. Alternatively you can use partially malted barley.

  • Says free 'mini' cheesymite scroll. I would assume that they would be at least half the size of the standard ones they make?

  • So there's people out there that will actually go to the store just to get their free cheeseburger/vegemite scroll?

    • +8

Well I don't think McDonald's or Bakers Delight deliver

    • Yes. Any true OzBargainer who likes these things will be there with bells on.

  • after seeing so many BD franchise out of business, i think i'll spare them this time

  • Went to the Bakers Delight at the Mt Ommaney (QLD) Shopping Centre today and asked for the free Cheesymite scroll. The girl at the counter just sighed out loud (looks like I wasnt the only one asking) and explained that this Bakers Delight is not part of the promotion … then she added quietly that her boss is to stingy .. well at least I got a laugh for free …
Nevertheless they shouldnt promote it on their website if not all stores participate.

  • can i order to if i go their?
