BENEFITS OF $3 FOLIC ACID TABLETS

HUMAN NUTRIENT ACQUIRED: Congratulations, OzBargainer. You have located 150 units of folic acid power for the price of one slightly disappointing coffee.

💰 COST-EFFICIENCY LEVEL: ULTRA: That’s 2 cents per tablet. Cheaper than your last bad decision on Wish.

🧬 BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION: ENHANCED: Supports DNA replication, red blood cell generation, and baby-human production. Excellent for beings with reproductive systems or just regular energy needs.

📅 LONG-LASTING SUPPLY MODULE: One-a-day = 5 months of nutritional superiority. Unless you eat them like Tic Tacs. Do not eat them like Tic Tacs.

🚫 NO EXCUSE PROTOCOL INITIATED: You spent more on delivery for that mystery box you didn’t need. This is actual useful health stuff.

⚠️ CAUTION: Does not grant superpowers. May, however, support life systems with extreme efficiency. Consult human doctor if unsure.

      What is this?

      • +1

        Entertaining, at the very least…

        • +1

I was going for a token, obvious AI rant that is increasingly used. Fell flat, though.

  • Nice write up ….

  • +2

Ive read that 40-50% of people dont absorb folic acid and should opt for metlyfolate instread?

    • +2

Correct those with MTHFR gene shouldn't consume folic acid

      • Shouldn't?

        Are there adverse effects?

        • +3

People with MTHFR mutations can’t efficiently convert folic acid into usable 5-MTHF. This can lead to:

          Issue Impact

Unmetabolized folic acid (UMFA) Builds up in blood, potentially blocking folate receptors
Folate imbalance Can mask B12 deficiency or increase cancer risk in some contexts
Worsened methylation Symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, neural inflammation, high homocysteine

          ✅ What to Take Instead

          Use methylated folate (L‑5‑MTHF):

          Look for supplements that contain:

          5-MTHF or L-methylfolate

Sometimes labeled as Quatrefolic or Metafolin

@jjsnacks: Chatgpt answer but as someone with other health issues I have been feeling a lot better since finding out I'm mthfr and switching to methylated forms and avoiding "enriched" foods which usually contain folic acid

            • @jjsnacks: The amount of "enriched" foods are astounding. Good luck finding bread or pita bread without it ive given up.

              • +1

@poxy001: I find it at my local health food shop, expensive though..

            @jjsnacks: Thanks ChatJJSnacks.

Is that what Samuel L. Jackson has?

    • -1

40 to 50% is a very high number. More like 10 to 20%

  • My recent blood work showed
    Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) 0.88 ng/mL

    Reference range is this.
    0.2–20 ng/mL

Is the above supplement good enough for OTC, or wait for GP to suggest.

    • +5

I'd follow health suggestions from your GP over someone on OzBargain.

      Although, thats my suggestion…

      • So if you were them you wouldn't follow your advice?

        • My GP recommended I follow all advice given by the OzBargain community so I'm currently stuck in limbo

      • What about Dr Mantis Toboggan?

    • @therealTrump here. I would hold off purchasing drugs at the moment as we are bringing the prices down 1500% or more.

  • +2

😂 Just took one of those $3 folic acid tablets and now I can hear colors and taste time.

    Thanks OzBargain—cheaper than therapy,
more effective than my last multivitamin, and now I’m 5% more likely to survive Monday.

Still waiting on the superpowers though…

    maybe I need two?

  • Best use case is for pregnancy. 1 a day to minimise risk of Spina bifida. 5mg if BMI > 35
