Never seen shell less than 6% more expensive than competing brands though…

    • +6

In my area, Shell is the best value.

    • Shell for premium fuels are not bad after 6% I think. Not really worth for me to stock up since I charge at home these days. Less filling.

    • +2

In my area, shell's display price may be 1c-4c higher than others sometimes, but after -4c Coles docket, -4c app discount and 6% gift card discount, it's always the cheapest, always cheaper than Costco.
Sometimes there is a 1000 bonus flybuys point as well.

      • I didnt know you can stack 4c coles & 4c app discount

        • +1

Also 10c/L offer (if you spend $20 or more on eligible items in the convenience store) mentioned here.

      • Was about to say this too…about 1-2c higher than Metro or Petro, but add on an easy Coles 4c discount and AFL app 4c discount, makes it cheapest
(This beats the BP 6c discount already)
Then the usual 3% variable load shift card discount and it's cheaper again
Throw in the odd Sodastream exchange at $20 and another 10c discount there and it's by far cheapest

Last fill up was 18c discount plus 3% off the fill and can't argue with that for value

6% fixed amount may not be so enticing when I can get variable load discount e-gift card at each full up

  • These always seem to coincide with upsized Super Swap, and bonus $10 Prezzee voucher deal too, but the only Shells/Express around me never have any Coles Myers cards!

    • I think they may be discontinuing sales of Coles GCs at Reddy Express. Last time they ran this promo I asked at one and the guy was able to find some behind the counter but the POS system did not recognise them.

      • +1

I couldn’t even use my Coles/Myer GC at a Shell/Reddy Express last time I tried, which is probably why they’re not stocking them.

  • I bought coles myer gift cards with these at shell

    • Thats pretty good if thats still available

      • @wavesgreen Can be used to buy other gift cards too such as Amazon etc.

  • Are these stackable with 4 cents off vouchers when using in store?

    • +2

Yes, stack with 4c Coles voucher and 4c AFL app

      • +1

@EatSleepOzBargainRpt You can stack with 4c/L from Coles supermarket, this 4c/L AFL offer and 10c/L offer (if you spend $20 or more on eligible items in the convenience store).

  • +1

Just noticed when I purchased that these can also be used at OTR

    • +6

      Most, but not all.

The Shell fuel finder (linked in the deal description) says that 13 out of 194 OTR-branded service stations currently do not accept Shell eGift Cards:

      • Shell OTR Broken Hill South - NSW
      • OTR Katherine (Caltex) - NT
      • OTR Hamilton (Caltex) - VIC
      • Shell OTR Wodonga - VIC
      • OTR Keilor Park (Caltex) - VIC
      • Shell S24 Diamond Creek - VIC
      • Shell OTR Swanbank - QLD
      • Shell OTR Prestons - NSW
      • Shell OTR Boolaroo - NSW
      • Shell OTR Lane Cove (Burns Bay Road) - NSW
      • Shell OTR Maddington - WA
      • Shell OTR Bunbury - WA
      • Shell OTR Devonport (Formby Road) - TAS
    • Unable to add these as the payment card in the OTR app for use towards OTR scan pump save. https://www.otr.com.au/otr-app/scan-pump-save/

      • Strange. I thought they just worked the same as a credit card like the special.gift cards.

      • The Shell eGift card is usually added to your mobile wallet, not the OTR app.

To redeem your Shell eGift Card in-store, you need to add the eGift to your Mobile Wallet and simply tap your Mobile Wallet on the EFTPOS/VISA machine to make a contactless payment. To add your Shell eGift Card to your Mobile Wallet, follow the below steps:

        1. Go to the Wallet app on your mobile device.
        2. Click on the plus (+) icon.
        3. Select Debit or Credit card on the next screen.
        4. Enter your card details from your eGift.
        5. Your card has now been added to your mobile wallet.
If your purchase is larger than your card balance, ask the cashier to redeem the gift card for the exact amount available on the card & pay the remaining balance with cash or another form of payment.
        • Yeah but the OTR scan pump save requires payment via the payment card added in the OTR app. There's a minimum 20c/L discount offer at newly opened OTR Pennant Hills [NSW] until 16th Aug. Thought of stacking with this but looks like it will not be possible.

@GPT4: Will check with @WookieMonster if there is a workaround.

          • +8

@GPT4: I think the issue is that Shell eGift Cards are currently not designed to work with the OTR app.

Shell eGift Cards are basically Ultimate eGift Cards that have been set up to work at participating Shell-branded service stations, rather than a specific merchant type.1 In other words, when you attempt a transaction, Blackhawk Network - the operator of Shell eGift Cards - checks whether the transaction is being conducted at a merchant known to be a participating Shell-branded service station. If the merchant is unknown to Blackhawk Network, the transaction will be declined.

I reckon one of two things is going on in your situation:

            1. The OTR app is rejecting Shell eGift Cards as a payment method, due to Shell eGift Cards not having the correct security measures (e.g. 3-D Secure). Shell eGift Cards are basically prepaid Visa gift cards, which cannot support 3-D Secure.

            2. Shell eGift Cards were never designed to work on the OTR app. There is nothing concrete on the Shell website to indicate Shell eGift Cards only work in-store, although the FAQs for Shell gift cards only feature entries for redeeming in-store.

I will contact Blackhawk Network to see whether Shell eGift Cards are intended to work via the OTR app.

            1. Most prepaid gift cards redeemable at service stations - e.g. 7-Eleven digital, Category Choice Fuel, Special Aussie Explorer - only check whether the merchant is using the correct merchant category code.

              @WookieMonster: Thanks Wookie.

            • +2

              @WookieMonster: Thanks Wookie!
Edit: Just fyi.. I could add the Special
Aussie Explorer egift card as a payment method in the OTR app. Cheers

  • So what's the search criteria on the Shell website to find out if a station accepts these cards? They aren't Shell Cards. I've just looked at all of my local Shells and there is nothing specifically stated on any of them that they will accept this type of card.

    • +3

When you are using the Shell Fuel Finder, you can do one of two things:

      • You can enable the Gift Cards - eGift Card filter under the Service & Amenities section, and that will only show you service stations that meet that criteria. Here is a screenshot if it helps.

      • You can click/tap on an individual service station and see whether Gift Cards - eGift Card is listed under the Service & Amenities section for that service station.
