He already said Ex in his post

        • Lol quality

    • +2

You should buy one for everyone in your city/town!! The price is GREAT!!!!

    • -4

      this screams poor

    • +6

Really? Why? NF has become more mainstream fashion/casual use oriented. I know they have some higher priced gear but their selling points are mostly about being stylish and urban practicality.
I was big in the climbing world a couple of decades ago and saw them switching their market but don't really know much about them anymore. However, I still live and work in an Alpine area and we really don't see North Face that much. Then again I don't see Arc'Teryx much either

      • What brands do you see?

        • -4

Probably various brands of t-shirts because "alpine" areas in Australia aren't terribly cold most of the year.

          • @tenpercent: Yeah defs not nordic like conditions. Tbh pretty much everything more expensive is a fashion item. Went camping last year in Warwick and yeah it was close to -3 at night but one family was decked out in FjällRäven gear.

            • @Bimbobob:

Tbh pretty much everything more expensive is a fashion item

Absolutely not true. Yeah if you were going on your camping trip I totally understand what you are saying.
What you are paying for with higher and brand is better quality stitching and seam sealing etc. It's all diminishing returns and if you're just doing the old camping trip of course it's not worth this.

I still have my climbing jacket from 1998 which is still my go to jacket. I have to waterproof the outer fabric every year and it's not very practical for urban use or fashion because it doesn't have normal hand pockets to thrust your hands into.

It isn't a fashion item and I certainly think there are better jackets for camping trips to Warwick but for the use it was made for it has certainly been worth the money

          • +1

@tenpercent: yeah well it's -2 here at Falls Creekat the moment. One minute fat fluffy snowflakes the next it's sleet dripping down my neck. If you want to wear a T-shirt, that's fine by me.

            • -2

              @slipperypete: -2? Lol

Literally survive in that with a thermal shirt and a hoody on top. -10 is likely the limit where things become uncomfortable in extended periods. -15 need to start thinking about proper clothing even for short periods.

Coldest winter ive seen was -39°c in '89.

        • @illusion99 I guess because most people are skiing in ski related clothing. The backcountry skiers, however are a different breed and the one doing multiple day adventures tend to have good quality stuff. To be honest, I don't think there is any particular brand that stands out. Ski and snowboard gear has to be cool ahead of functional.

Again it's all diminishing returns. If you are out just for the day do you need to spend a fortune on jackets when you simply need to ski to the nearest restaurant to warm up again?

      • +1

I still rate NFs summit series gear (but the last stuff I bought was 11 years ago - hiking pants). NF’s regular line is meh though

        • Absolutely, their gear a decade ago was pretty good stuff. It's still good stuff now but it's not the high-end gear that it used to be

I swear whenever walk pass that store, there are only Chinese customers inside

    • +3

Asian customers, yes. Not just Chinese. They have high disposable income and love that type of fashion. Good on ‘em

    • How do you know they are Chinese? Or you are assuming any Asian person is Chinese?

      • How do you know they aren't Chinese? Or are you assuming people can't tell between different Asian ethnicities?

        • I don’t know. That is why I asked

      • -1

You do realise that Asians from different countries don't all look the same, right?

        • +3

Yes but I didn’t realise it is so easy to tell different ethnicities from a quick 10 sec moving glance through a shop window where not all of them are even facing you. Either lucky that everytime he walks past they are always facing the window. Or more skilled than me I guess

        • Some might have been born here, I recall a friend of mine "looked asian" but was born in australia, and people used to ask where he was from and answer was "boxhill" .

    • +1

ArcTeryx is a Canadian brand. If you go to Canada in winter, the locals swear by it. If the locals in a freezing snowy rainy place love the stuff, its probably pretty good. I have several bombproof ArcTeryx items that cost a fortune but are the first thing I reach for when I go skiing in Canada.

  • +3

Arcteryx is over-priced, and the Arcteryx jacket 'worth'
getting is the Alpha SV , which I think is still Made In Canada.

    • It’s really interesting seeing how much the decline in quality of Arcteryx and the number of people who’ve had jackets fail for stuff that shouldn’t fail on the membranes

  • +1

    Store name checks out.

  • Bloody bargain!
I bought one for every member of my extended family (26)

  • Looks similar to the Uniqlo $60 jacket with a logo

  • -4

Does this keep me 5 times as warm than my Uniqlo?

    • +11

      Frozensage 10 min agonew
Does this keep me 5 times as warm than my Uniqlo?

No, because as you can see from the photo, this jacket is not designed to keep anyone warm.

      Coz it's a raincoat.

I don't like this jacket, but what is it with the willful ignorance that people love to showcase on this forum?

      • +1

Does it keep me 5x dryer in the rain?

        • +2

No, but it should keep you as dry, but much less hot and sweaty. The value in these expensive jackets is the technical fabrics which balance breathability, weight, and toughness.

        • +1

There's already a brand for that - SuperDry.

        • Frozensage
Does it keep me 5x dryer in the rain?

Yes, it does- if you're doing anything active like hiking with a pack. Which is what this style of jacket is designed for. The Uniqlo one will wet out internally within minutes because it doesn't have pit zips.

Now if the sum total of your outdoor exercise experience is wandering down the street window shopping in a drizzle, the Uniqlo is right for you.

Tell me that you have zero experience with serious outdoor gear, without saying that you have zero experience with serious outdoor gear.

  • hope someone can find a decent deal for a skiing jacket of this brand.

  • I've been wearing my $99 Macpac halo for nearly a decade now.

I have a health condition that makes me quite cold, such that I find myself too cold even with an M12 heated hoody running at full heat layered beneath the Macpac halo.

I'm looking to spend approx $600-$700 on another down jacket that is higher quality and warmer.

Any suggestions? Most of the brands I find recommended in my search aren't available to try on in-store in Australia.

    • +1

Patagonia have stores in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane as well a few outlets stores scattered about. Their products are great quality and have free lifetime repairs. I had a tear in a puffer that I've had for years and they fixed it up and replaced the missing down as well.

Could be worth heading in and trying a few things on to see if anything meets your needs.

    • +3

Sorry to hear about the health condition.

Based on what you use I think you may struggle to get something in Australia. You have much better options in colder climates that are really hard to get here.

For your situation though have you played around with base layers instead of jackets? If you haven’t I would play around with base layers before looking at a new jacket. Try a 250-300 weight merino base layer before a new jacket, it will be a cheaper way of seeing if you can be warmer. An example:
      https://www.icebreaker.com/en-au/mid-winter-sale/merino-260-…

With down jackets pay attention to the fill number and type of down (duck and goose is excellent) as a guide from the reputable brands. I’ve done a lot of high altitude hiking (4000-5000 metres) and absolutely love my North Face Summit Series jacket, it’s 800 loft down fill (NB Summit Series is NF’s higher end range and way better quality than the regular stuff). I paid $400 about 12 years ago and it’s worth every cent (I rarely use it in Australia because it’s too warm). I use this with the above weight merino base layer, and a heavy weight merino t shirt and keeps me warm.

      Hopefully you can find something!

      • I agree with this. If you have a heated layer underneath your Halo, there's probably not much better you can do on the outer top half. As well as the suggestion of base layers, I'd also try and improve warmth of other body parts - for example, a pair of merino leggings underneath your pants, and woolen socks and down booties. Particularly if you are relatively sedentary.

You dont need to spend that much on one jacket. See if you can find Columbia insulated jackets anywhere close to you. Else, you can order online and try them out. They are usually true to size

      • +2

I realised this when i bought a fleece at Decathlon in Beijing for $7, shortly after getting my half price Mountain Designs fleece for $100 back home.

    • Definitely layer up! Maybe look into merino thermals. If you're feeling cold even with an M12 heated hoodie and down jacket I'm impressed, I'm sure Paddy Pallin should have something you can try on I'd recommend trying the Patagonia Down jackets they have there. They are great

    • +1

Regardless of what you're wearing on your torso, you can lose loads of heat through hands, feet and head. Are they covered up properly? e.g. thick wool socks, insulated boots (overkill for most people in this country, but if you have a condition worth looking into).
