This is an absolute brilliant deal on meross's new matter smart plugs, usually the standard plugs are around $15~ at ATL so at $21 with Matter support this is a fantastic price for something that can operate cross-platform and local only.

Just FYI these matter units are significantly smaller and compact than the old model. They're about half the size and can be double stacked next to each other and don't block any power points which is a huge win.

I've been running these for a couple of months now and they've been brilliant. I've integrated them into HA to automate room heaters, car charging, turn on and off some non-smart lamps for when I'm away on holidays. Super solid on wifi so far and haven't had any issues with connectivity or setup.

Please note that you will need a matter hub to set these up. You might already have one in the form of an Apple TV/other hub, or you can also DIY your own matter hub through Home Assistant with a bit of setup.

  • Would these be good for a kogan 2400w wifi heater to measure its energy usage?
Or will my house be at risk?

    • +1

The energy usage is in the name. Most heaters are usually 800/1200/1600/2400W dependant on settings, it'll say in the manual or on the box how many watts at each setting and they run at like 99.9% efficiency, so if it's on, that's how many watts it's using.

      30 minutes on high and you've used 1.2kWh - 15 minutes 0.6kWh

    • +2

As mentioned in the other comments it's not a good idea to put 2400W through a smart plug, unless it was for smaller periods of time (<1hr).

Alternatively you can run it through the plug, but run your heater on a lower power setting to place less demands on the plug and any extension cables you might be using.

    • +1

my 2kw panel heater melted my tp link smart plug and 4 plug powerboard. only looking back now and at all the general advice freely available did i realise how stupid that was and how lucky i was that i didn't burn down my house!

    • Would these be good for a kogan 2400w wifi heater to measure its energy usage?

I use TP Link one for Dyson heater which is around 2000w - now my heater is on for maximum of a few mins before it goes on standby until the room temp drops again. I have been using it for over 2 years and its doing well. You just have to be sure that the Kogan one doesn't stay on for longer period. If its like Dyson which turn on periodically to maintain the room temp to 20 degrees (which I have set) then it should be ok.

  • +1

Just had my second "Brilliant" (not so brilliant) smart plug die in a matter of months. Good timing!

  • +1

Given that these things shouldn't be connected with high draw devices/appliances, what do you use this for that will save you any notable power by cutting of vampire power usage?

    • They're 240v 10A so 2400W? What's limiting it?

Only things anywhere near that draw are things with heating elements, fan heaters on high, hairdryers etc

    • +2

I have my heaters set to 1400W. Also I use these to monitor my driers, washine machines and other devices around the home. They send me a notification when they're done so I know that they are ready to be emptied. The notification triggers off the current power usage.

Here's my use-case. In the laundry room, I have these meross smart plugs connected to:
      - heat pump dryer
      - ceiling exhaust fan

This is the rule I have set:
      - if dryer is running, turn on exhaust fan.
      - if dryer is not running, turn off exhaust fan.

Q: Why would you want turn on the exhaust fan when your dryer is already a heat pump? Doesn't the heat pump drain all the moisture into a container?

A: My 2019 LG heat pump dryer is probably getting old and is leaking moisture/warm air in the laundry room and it can get quite humid, so I pump out the moisture to the outside wall via ceiling exhaust fan. It probably drains 90% of moisture into the built-in container, and pumps 10% of the moisture into the laundry room.

      • +2

That's a great idea, my weekend project!

      • +2

I absolutely love that you put the Q&A in there because damn right I was questioning it before I got there haha

      • Here's my use-case. In the laundry room, I have these meross smart plugs connected to: heat pump dryer

what the amp heat pump dryer usually use? I am assuming it's less than 10a if its connected to the wall plug?

    • Here's another use case for the meross smart plug:

If the Meross MS600 presence sensor is triggered (in the kitchen), turn on the dumb non-smart strip lights (SAL FLBP24V5M) in the kitchen.

I basically converted dumb LED strip lights into smart ones.

  • Is this suitable for outdoors to run pool pump on a timer? I can't seem to be able to tell from the listing.

    • As long as the pump runs when its got power connected to it and there isn't some sort of other timer.

      • yup that is all that it needs, but I wanted to know if this can be used in an outdoor wall outlet safely

        • There isn't an IP rating, so probably not ideal unless you can put something around it and enclose the plug from the elements.

    • +2

There's nothing stopping you from doing so except wifi range and waterproofing. If you want to run it outdoors just make sure to put it in an IP65 outdoor cable box, and check with your phone if you have wifi range.

I've used generic tuya wifi ones to do exactly this and it's been fine. Obviously keep it out of the rain

  • +1

Are there any key benefits of matter plugs vs regular tuya wifi plugs?
Tuya ones are half the price.

I have a lot of tuya plugs already, but recently got a matter hub but don't know how it's better than regular wifi.

    • Also keen to know why these over the half price tuya?

    • +3

With Tuya you're running on Tuya cloud and, unlike matter, Tuya cloud can stop supporting these devices if/when it's not cost effective for Tuya to keep support. This has happened many many times with abandonware, most notably nest thermostats being a recent example. Since Tuya supports so many cheap devices via AliExpress that cost a few dollars but produce massive amounts of data, I can see a day in the future when they will start adding a subscription to keep your devices available via the cloud.

With matter these are designed to be eco-system agnostic and run in local only mode far better than Tuya. Because of this, as new eco-systems come and go your matter plugs will just be added and swapped between. They're cross compatible and are future proofed to be available externally.

So if you're building our your smart home, it's far more future proofed and stable if you go for matter over a brand specific infrastructure like Tuya. For me it was a buy once cry once type situation. Furthermore from what I've seen Tuya devices over wifi can be incredible insecure if you don't block internet traffic.

  • As a tech geek, I really want to use a smart plug like this and make the best use out of it, but aside from the apparent reason (i.e. measuring energy monitoring) I genuinely can't think of many helpful use cases for my home environments where many of the devices are running without rocker switches or other devices already have smart function built in….

Would love to hear what you creative guys/girls use these plugs for!

    • +3

I have them on my animal lights, turn on at 6:45am and off at 5:30pm. I use one for my son's humidifier, turns off at 6am every morning as I was forgetting to turn it off sometimes.

They are handy for hard-to-reach places. My Dad has just installed a couple for some equipment at home where the rocker switchers are hard to access (behind a desk, etc). He also found that some devices in standby mode were still drawing power, so he has put smart switches on those and they turn off at 11pm and then back on at 7am, when he is not using the devices.

I use them for some outdoor flood lights.

I find the timing function the best thing. It isn't so much access and turning it off at the rocker switch, but more that you can set a schedule and it is done.

      • I'm curious if you can set light times via geolocation instead of set times?

Recently installed those Eufy floodlights and I'm able to set them to only turn on between sunset/sunrise and that's a feature I didn't know I needed on every device I own until now

        • +1

Yep you definitely can, just depends where you setup this platform. Super easy to do.

I'd also recommend looking into 'scenes'. I have a morning, sunset, goodnight and away scene. Depending on time of day and geolocation you can set these scenes which will then set device settings all at once on a more global level without having to set device specific automations for each time/location.

        • +1

I'm curious if you can set light times via geolocation instead of set times?

100%. I use this. When I am within 500 meters of home, it turns on all my lights outside. Floodlights and downlights (I've got the Mirabello Downlights). No more arriving home in the dark and fumbling with the keys to open the door.

I've got the Mirabello door sensors too, so whenever I open the front door, the lights come on.

          • @geekcohen: Just a word on that, I'd leave some lights on inside home otherwise your automations can show whether you're home if it's 1:1 with you being home. Always good to leave some minimal lights on assuming your house is visible from the street.

            • @JSONBourne: I have some outdoor lights that are always on anyway (sunset to sundown), but there are some extras that turn on when I get home like the front door downlight.

We are in a court, so no issues generally and covered with plenty of security cameras around on place, so no issues on the front.

I'll have to remove most of it soon anyway and then install at the new place as we are on the move…….

    • +1

TBH the energy monitoring functionality is fairly niche, that vast majority of people don't really need it, which is why I'm surprised at how popular these energy monitoring plugs seem to be. The smart plug functionality itself is more valuable since you can program the plug to turn on/off at certain times or together with other home automation triggers etc.

I mostly use the energy monitoring versions of smart plugs as I'm obsessed with tracking energy usage in my home, but I'm pretty sure I'm an outlier.

      • +4

I use the energy usage as triggers to know when a device is done. Really handy when you put multiple loads of drying or washing on during the day and its in the garage so I can't always hear the beep.

      • +2

I also only use it for energy tracking. So I can hound the wife 😜

    • +5

Sometimes I want to leave the fan on on the fire when I go to sleep, but only for 2 or 3 hours because the fire will die and cool and by morning it's blowing out cold air and if I can't even get up in the night to add more wood, there's no way I'm getting up to turn the fan off

Or leave the electric blanket physically switched on but off at the smart plug, then you can create timers for that, turn it on remotely if you get home at random times etc.

Basically, I want to be warm

    • +1

I use one of the original meross ones with a plug in 100w fees standing heated towel rail.

I can schedule it, or hit the button on it to turn it on, and I have the app set to automatically turn it off after it's run for an hour, in case I forget to turn it off.

I also have one on my garage door opener plug, to cut power to it at times when I know I won't be using it -there had been cases of thieves in our area using scanner devices to pop open garage doors.

  • Does it show power usage in real time, and/or with daily summary over a period of time?

Curious to track certain appliance power draw, no good if it doesn't save usage history.

    • Yes to both.

    • +2

Smart plugs generally only store basic/generalised and recent stats due to limited on-board storage — e.g. total energy usage for the past day/week/month. If you want extensive detailed usage history you'll need some kind of data logger. Even in Home Assistant this requires quite a few extra steps to setup with addons like Influx DB, so it's not out-of-the-box:
      https://community.home-assistant.io/t/long-term-data/768084/…

    • +3

Via the app you can track energy usage over any time period such as months or years, you can see it here. Via Matter this plug exposes:

      • Current (Amps)

      • Voltage

      • Current Power

      • Energy (Usage over time period)

      • On/Off.

Which you can then record in any recorder you choose such as HA with influxDB.

  • -3

$12 cheaper when you posted in May. Tapo is also under $20 when on sale and I love to stick to one app as possible.

    • +2

That plug is just the standard wifi variant and not matter. Usually matter is around $15 a plug more, so this is a great deal.

      • They should do the same job and pretty much through HA I think. Okay matter is a new chip that makes it easy with android and iOS. Personally I'd not pay $35 but $21 per plug is reasonable. Some other brands sell $70 for 4 matter plugs. Should do the same but not sure.

        • If you use the standard plug then you’re operating via Meross cloud rather than locally. This could be closed at anytime.

HomeKit is also fine as it’s local only, but the merossLAN plugin uses meross’s MQTT so isn’t guaranteed long term.

I’ve been burned by Kasa when it had HA issues since it was using TP-Link cloud, so IMO it’s not worth it for a $5 saving.

          • @JSONBourne: 1 left in stock just now and I give it a go. Had the old meross plug one which is very bulky, the reason I never used meross again. Most of the time it's quite handy to have it available in Google Home too.

            • @bcYield: Yep these are a lot smaller, they can fit side by side now which is great. I agree the old ones were quite big but between the new size and matter they're my current favourite. Hope they work for you!

    • +1

The May deal was for the older non-Matter version.

  • I'd love to use these with a dumb heater for example to turn it on when I am exporting solar and off when I am importing during the day. Ideally though I'd integrate with a smart thermometer so it turns on/off according to room temp too -a sort of glorified thermostat. Any suggestions on a good thermometer? I have Home Assistant set-up already.

    • If you already have a matter server, I got the meross one from their hub deal and the display is great - https://www.amazon.com.au/meross-Thermometer-Humidity-Hygrom…

It runs on AA's so I put some Ladda's in it so no coin batteries.

      • So the thermometer does not have the matter logo but you are saying with HA configured correctly I can still use it without needing the meross hub? Thanks!

        • +1

Sorry I stand corrected, you do need the hub! And then the hub will connect the thermometer into your network as a matter device. Apologies I didn't realise that, just looked into it now in more detail.

  • Can we use it for induction cooktop?

  • -1

Car charging - are you saying this one is OK to draw 2400W for 8 - 10 hours overnight?

    • No

    • +1

As mentioned elsewhere, no not unless it's under 8A. Best to use an inbuilt scheduler on your charger or car to be sure.

  • +1

Perfect - bought a new place and before I moved in I decided that I would only use Matter across all smart home devices instead of my mix of Zigbee/etc. which has proven reliable when the hub/etc. has the right drivers/support but if there isn't, then it's a pain.

Now my focus is on not being locked down to a specific brand/vendor and making sure I can use it locally when the Internet goes down.

    • what do you use as your thread hub?

      • +1

At the moment it will be an Amazon Echo 4 with an Eero Pro 7. I want to eventually move to Apple HomePod/Apple TV but waiting for the Apple launch later this year where there is new products expected in this category.

  • +2

Two pack no longer seems available.

    • Hopefully will come back later this week, they had to restock during prime sales so I’m sure the same thing will happen here. Hopefully not long!

  • Does anyone know if these show current, voltage, power factor and peak draw?

    • +1

Via the app you can track energy usage over any time period such as months or years, you can see it here. Via Matter this plug exposes:

      • Current (Amps)

      • Voltage

      • Current Power

      • Energy (Usage over time period)

      • On/Off.

Which you can then record in any recorder you choose such as HA with influxDB.

      • Where did you get info showing 'current (amps)' and 'voltage' from?

I have the meross mss310 and it only does power (W) and energy (kWh). No voltage, current or power factor.

The image you shared only shows similar details to my model.

        • Are you seeing that in the app or via Matter? Have you also done the recent firmware update? This is also the MSS315.

          • @JSONBourne: This is in the meross app.
How can I see it via matter?
            Web portal? App?
And yes my firmware is up to date.

  • +3

For those that missed out, there is a $10 off coupon on the 4-pack making it $22.50/each.

  • Also, this deal for the presence sensor is back under Lightning deal if anyone is interested: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/914806

  • +1

Back in stock at this price again.

  • Whats the Miain difference between Meross Matter VS this ? meross Smart Plug WiFi Outlet with Energy Monitor

    • That's the old model which is fatter/chunkier and doesn't fit side-by-side on dual power outlets. The new model uses Matter and is slimmer, so it has no problems being used side-by-side. There is no reason to get the old model.

  • These are my first matter devices. I thought a big benefit was adding directly to Google home for example rather than going through the meross app.

However adding through Google showed it always disconnected, and then adding through meross and then linking doesn't show any energy monitoring through Google home?

    • +1

When I connected mine directly to Google Home it created two instances of each device, one that works (on and off) and another 'shadow' device that just sits in the list creating clutter. Deleting the shadow device also deletes the main device. Not a great experience.

      • Yeah I also got the 2 devices, however both were offline anyway
