Eonon UX6 7" 2DIN Headunit with Carplay Android Auto 6GB RAM + 64GB ROM $263.99 + Delivery ($0 to Select Areas) @ Eonon eBay

690
CBTJ20

Been down a week long rabbit hole looking for a decent android auto head unit. This is by far and away the best value deal i've been able to find.

Some features:

  • Newest Qualcomm 6225 chip (Not a UIS/FYT platform like many other cheap China sourced units)
  • QLED Display (which is better than IPS for visibility)
  • 6gb of ram
  • 64gb of storage
  • volume knob
  • USB C port on the fascia
  • Android 13 (many out there are still on 10)

You can also bundle a bunch of accessories like cameras and OBD2 scanners. Even better value doing this.

For context:
RRP of $449
Eonon website currently selling for $339 with just the camera and a charger

I these Chinese headunits have had mixed reviews (Eonon is one of the better known ones who specifically cater to AU market but even they have a patchy history) but the value and configurability vs big brands is the reason you choose these.

There are other models available on their eBay store if youre looking for bigger screens. If youre looking for a comparison, the eonon website has a great table of all their models on their product pages.

Excellent research. High end features at very reasonable cost. Thank you for Sharing.

Howe is the reliability, build quality of these units and how about software updates?

    @StrangeDisposition
Why do you specifically mentioned that they cater for AU market. Just wondering if they were not suitable for the US market? Just

    • They specifically call out rhe AU market so i hope their service for AU is better than others who dont. Complete speculation though

      • +9

I would argue that for the product to be considered designed for AU market would mean the volume knob is on the right side, closest to the driver.

    • +1

I'm still running an old GA2165 since 2018.

Don't think it ever got any system updates in that time but as far as reliability it's never missed a beat. Slow as all hell though, I'm considering the upgrade to this one.

    • +2

I have bad experience with Eonon. Headunit was about four years old when I tried a firmware update for the first time when unit got slow and glitchy (even for basic functions like using Google maps and Spotify), and just couldn’t do it. Communication with Eonon (presumably based in China) was extremely difficult and hard to follow.

No confidence that these firmware issue are solved so no more Eonon for me.

    • What is the boot time for this unit? I don't want to wait one minute or more to connect carplay everytime I start my car.

What is the current draw when car engine is turned off?

      • Most of these headunits all use the same base firmware so you can use either shutdown mode or sleep mode.
Depending on the unit you are looking about 150ma roughly?
Boot time is about 20-30 seconds.

        • That's good to know, thank you very much. I'm especially concerned about the boot time. 20-30 seconds is good I wait for the oil pressure to build up before I go.

FYI most cars standby current is under 60mA with luxury cars tipping 85mA from the factory.
I've been collecting some data some Android units go up to 180mA.

If my AI chatGPT chat skills is okay I am guessing I will be able to park the car for 1-2 weeks before the battery is too weak to start the car…

Sometimes due to lack of testing, the parts of the OS can go crazy and get out of sleep mode, then you will have a flat battery in no time. For people who is looking to install 3rd party Android headunits I suggest getting a low voltage cut off to prevent such things from happening.

          • @skillet: The issue with the Chinese units is they use zlink as the AA/CP interface and the bluetooth antennas are usually just dupont sized wires sticking out the back of the unit so sometimes it takes ages to connect, the bluetooth implementations seem to be hacked in / they disable OSB linking so you buy their ones. But you can hack that easy enough. It all depends on what android the seller has installed and zlink version if you get a good AA experience.

So if you keep the headunit on, the bluetooth connections seem to get worse as time goes on. But for under $200 what can you expect. I bought one and already have to replace the cables 2x because the seller forgot the first batch and the second batch was for a different unit lol. I could put the multimeter across mine to tell you exactly but most chinese units hand between 120-150ma in sleep mode. Because of that i set it to shut down after 5 mins of car off. I don't mind waiting the 20-30 seconds for the boot. I didn't install the rear cam just because i am lazy and it would be not great waiting for 30 seconds until your unit is up for the cam to show up :D

But i wouldnt want to have the car off for 3 days it will kill the battery faster the unit will shut off when the battery gets under 12v i think usually.

      • FWIW, I fired it up with my bench supply and in sleep mode power draw is negligible (as in doesn't even register any current draw on the display to 2 decimal places.) Roughly 700ma when on and idle.

      ? Very insightful

        • +1

The Q part is screen technology, quantum dots that increase brightness and colour. ie makes the screen easier to read in bright conditions like daylight driving.
Only the LED part is in reference to the backlight technology.

The entire name, I'm pretty certain, is just genius marketing specifically designed to confuse people initially looking for OLED technology in TVs. (Either "Q comes after O so, it must be better!" or simply "why does that OLED have a weird little stroke in the bottom corner of the O?")

    • +1

Genius. That's what these headunits are for.

    • +8

People that require an aftermarket head unit likely aren't driving new cars?

      • I bought an older BL Mazda 3 for a second car rather than a BM or BL precisely so I could put in an aftermarket double din wireless CarPlay unit.
They are also very reliable, so the decision was easy.

        • Would you mind sharing the make and model of the after market unit and approximate cost

          • @utsc: Well,,a bit of a digression for this thread, but this was a couple of years ago now and I got it on sale about 30% off, but was about $600. I got a kenwood, but there are heaps of brands about. I also got a dash cam and reverse cam at the same time, and the applicable aerpro dash moulding and wiring.

If you want brands, choose kenwood, pioneer and Sony. alpine seems too expensive to me. The kenwood equivalent to mine for sale today would be DDX9020DABS

as an aside, I will never self install something like this ever again.

      • +1

Bought a 2007 Corolla recently, as my son is taking his driving test soon. In very decent nick and only $3,500 from people who live a few doors up from us.

Got a screen and reverse camera put in by a bloke working out of his garage for $300. Works just as well as the one in our 2024 CX30.

    • +3

I have a classic car that i daily. Anything bigger than 2DIN would really ruin the aesthetic and block things like AC controls

      • +1

Maybe a retro style blaupunkt would work if you need modern features like Bluetooth and not so much the full android auto

      • -6

What car is it? Most classic cars don't even have DIN sized head units, let alone double DIN. DIN didn't become a standard until 1984, and double DIN appeared later than that.

        • +10
            • +8

@MrZ: AU Falcon is a classic.

                • @MrZ: We have a Delica that fits most states idea of 'classic car' being 30 years old.

                  https://sodo-moto.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/5DA6090A-11…

                • +6

@MrZ: should probably quit while you're way way behind

                • +1

@MrZ: @MrZ your argument about single vs double DIN for classics holds no water. Different cars take different sizes for aesthetics.

                  I have a BMW E31 840Ci, 1994 (single DIN)
I also have a Toyota Sera, 1990 (double DIN)
                  I had a Honda S2000, 1999 (single DIN)

                  • @tangcla: <3 Toyota Sera - we had one while overseas, spewing sold it (though for very handsome profit), still should have imported the little bugger

                    • +1

@ccrap: @ccrap sadly they never appreciated in value like the other low-volume cars of the era. Mine's a factory manual one, so much more fun than an auto 5E.

  • +3

The newer processor means nothing it's the ram that is important and 6GB would be my starting point.
Unless you just run AA or carplay then the lower spec units would suffice but even then 4GB ram would be the minimum.

    • +5

Not an expert but from what i can tell newer processors tend to be paired with better quality DSP and bluetooth chips.

      • Yeah this DSP looks good but you find the more Ram a unit has the higher the spec levels overall. I dont see many below BT 5.0 now either. So RAM and DSP are the 2 main things to look for, storage isnt an issue as they can take USB but this generally increases in size as you spec up also. If you want 360 degree cameras make sure to get a compatible model as these require a chip on the board apparently and cant be added to any head unit.

      • It's a CAR. Fidelity for most people would be lost due to noise.
Ignore this if you own a Phantom

    • +2

just run AA or carplay … then 4GB ram would be the minimum.

For just AA/Carplay, you only need 1GB, as those units don't use Android, which has become horribly bloated.

      • Yeah but AA/CP runs via an app which needs to load on top of the home app so you can get lag and have to wait for it to link up. I find 4GB is sufficient for single apps to run ok with minimal lag.

        • You misunderstand. The basic AA/CP do not use android at all. Just a minimal Linux system, I assume.

          • +2

@bargaino: No I do understand, this head unit uses android, it runs an app such as zlink to connect the phone, the app basically emulates an android auto head unit. It is not like a clarion or alpine AA head unit which works like tou said.

  • +1

The images say that the rearview camera is included.

  • +1

I installed an eonon head unit in my partner's Yaris, and it has been brilliant! The only critique I can't say is the receivng caller can have a bit of an echo on calls. Otherwise the wireless android auto, and car play are great.

As others have started 6gb ram should be the starting point.

  • +2

I haven't had good experience with this company. Unit I bought was faulty on arrival - multiple attempts to resolve via email tech support failed and response was really poor. They wanted me to ship it back to China at my own expense. Had to raise a dispute through ebay to resolve - ended up with less than 50% refund and a useless headunit that went to landfill.

    • +5

Why haven't you escalated to PayPal and your bank?

  • Interesting. I was just about to purchase a T'eyes unit. Anyone been able to compare the quality of the two?

    • +1

I'm in a similar position. Have a look at Dudu7, looks promising

      • +1

I believe Dudu is being used by one of the car manufacturers as oem equipment now. Yeyes also has good reviews but is basically a generic FYT with good firmware.

      • +1

Wow this looks impressive. Will look into it. Thanks.

        • I've had a good experience with my Dudu7 at least personally. Doesn't lag at all although there has been 1 or two times where the system freezes and has to restart.

      • I wpuld have purchased a duduOS one but they dont have a 7in model anywhere with decent specs

    • Can't compare the two but I have a TEYES CC3 2K and I have mixed feelings about it. The reversing camera they sell with the Sony reversing camera is amazing quality and nearly every person that gets in the car asks about the system because of it. GPS, maps and music are amazing on it and work well. The performance is fine, doesn't seem to lag or anything (i have a 6GB model),

The one single massive thing that destroys the experience and lets everything else down is the voice controls or basically complete lack of them. There's no google voice, the only option is their stupid T'eyes voice which is absolutely useless, it crashes constantly and it never recognizes anything i say even when it doesn't crash.

      • Interesting, could you still use it with Android Auto though? I guess that removes the native GPS/Music experience with it though?

  • Does anyone have know where I can find a comparability table? I have a 2017 Hyundai Tucson that has a basic 7 inch unit. Would this be a simple swap out? I want to be able to put the OEM headunit back in when it comes time to selling.

It has android auto and apple car play, but I assume with this I could watch Netflix and other video streaming services, obviously not while driving.

  • +1

Would these fit in a 2006 Toyota Estima/Tarago?

    • You'll need the Toyota side fillers as those have a 200mm facia. Theyre only $15.

  • Does the E cellular work here or do we need the U

  • +7

I bought Eonon X20PLUS 10.1 Inch from Amazon back in 2023 - not the same model but I thought I'd share some insight on the brand. Make of it what you will.

    PRO:

-Looks really good for the price.

    CONS:

    • Audio quality is terrible, even after replacing my stock with Sony XS-XB1641 car speakers, the audio quality is still quite shabby, and most notably CRACKS when you play any song with bass.

    • Brightness and volume setting resets intermittently - sometimes when you start your car, you will be greeted with super loud music even if you never set it to be that loud to begin with. Also if you start your car during daytime, the display brightness might return to default, which is not bright enough, so you will have to adjust both.

    • Reverse camera works, however the display comes with multiple faint moving white lines, which is a bit annoying to see, but not the worst.

    • LED lights on the side buttons bleed into the screen - meaning if you turn your screen display off at night, the LED button lights will stay on and the light is visible on the left part of the screen.

    • You will have to adjust the clock frequently - every 1 month or so, the time will be ~4 minutes ahead.

My verdict is that, this unit is great if you have an older beater and just want a fancier upgrade with minimum cost. However on a decent car (~$15k above) I would invest on a better known brand head unit.

    • Volume resetting would be a deal breaker TBH. That sounds like a recipe to ruin your existing speakers fast.

      • Yep not only volume, but the equaliser would also reset to default sometimes, so it is quite a bit of a pain in the bum.

I had it installed in my old beater though so it's still a massive upgrade.

Put an EONON in my daily, love it lol.

For eBay, I would suggest putting the item in the cart and sitting on it.

EONON will likely send a 5% off offer.

    • +2

You won't be able to use the 20% voucher on their offer though.

  • The issue with these units is the poor call quality.

  • -3

is Android headunit legal in Australia? keen to get one with huge screen from overseas

    • +1

      Why wouldn't it be?

    • Depends on your state and licence.

In NSW, if you have a full licence no issues, but if you're on anything else, technically you're not allowed to use it.

  • +2

Paying extra just for the Qualcomm chip in these head units is overpriced IMO. Go for higher ram. I've been using a 9 inch Aliexpress QLED 8GB ram head unit for over a year now (yes, polarized glassed work perfectly fine with my screen). The 8GB ram makes a huge difference. Scrolling and panning around on Google Maps and Waze is buttery smooth, along with running two apps split screen side by side.

    • +2

      which one 007??

      • There's like a dozen different brands (Navifly, Carlaeoer, Yiyuan, Ekiy, ESSGOO, Ruacheng, etc) all selling basically the same OEM head units on Aliexpress, some brands with custom or slightly tweaked OS. If they don't list the CPU as Qualcomm, just assume its a generic entry level CPU from whatever unknown manufacturer, in that case, look for the ones that are marketed as 720p or 1080p resolution QLED screen (the screen is surprisingly good, can be seen in bright sunlight, its even better than the screen on my Alldocube Iplay 50 Mini Pro tablet.) These QLED models usually come with the newer gen CPU and DSP. It turned the muffled average-sounding speakers of my Honda Jazz into something that almost sounded Dolby Atmos-like. It really works. If your dashboard, has the space for and it doesn't block the aircon vents, go for these newer 13.1 inch and 11.5 inch models.

  • Cater for au market but for LHD controls….

I have snubi or something like that. Been rock solid.

  • Dang, if only it would fit my 2014 X1

  • -3

Had so many issues with xtrons brand of android head unit which i think seem to use the same units as eonon.

Honestly save yourself the time and dont bother. Call quality will be terrible, the music quality will be poor, volume limits will be all over the place, there will be numerous other issues.

Do a quick search for the brand and bad call quality and you will instantly find loads of people with the same issues… muffled, underwater sounding calls with a recommendation to buy external microphones and even with them it's all absolute trash.

    • What is a good brand, then?

  • +1

Had Eonon for my Mazda 3 a while ago (No longer own the car), was one of those "plug and play" and made to fit versions. Can't remember the model, tho.

Pros: Worked quite well in terms of Bluetooth, and the audio was not bad. I got it installed with a 3rd party subwoofer at the time, and it worked well with the sub too.

    Cons:
    - From memory, I got this head unit for its CarPlay capability, but it never worked (Cable and Bluetooth both). It could mirror my phone and charge it, but it just wouldn't connect for CarPlay.
    - Was quite slow, especially if you use 3rd party apps. As it's an Android unit and CarPlay didn't work for me, I thought I'd just download Google Maps so I could have a similar experience, but it just did not want to work, super slow.
    - Never reached out to them because it was good enough via bluetooth, so no experience in that regard

Additional note with my experiences of Android head unit vs name brands.
    - Basically, you're paying the name brands for reliability. My partner recently got a Kenwood unit installed into her old Toyota, and it works super amazingly, snappy and responsive, wireless CarPlay with 0 delay or stuttering. My current Andrior head unit (No idea what brand or model it is) for my Honda Accord, in contrast, has poor Bluetooth and thus wireless CarPlay experience, and only works well via cable connection. I'd say we both ended up paying around the same amount of money for the unit + installation, which was around 700 - 800 bucks at the time.

TLDR, Name brands = generally better reliability and a more stable experience at the cost of MONEY, Android head units can be slow and connection can be choppy, compensate with a wired connection and it'll work well!

    • Agreed. With wireless carplay/AA, it is a deal breaker if it's flaky and disconnects constantly.

  • +1

Any good mechanics to install in Brisbane plz

  • Is there cheap ones for apple car play?

  • What is the best Chinese brand/model with solid carplay ?(wireless)

  • $4 cheaper direct?

    Or is this model different?

    https://www.eonon.com/Android-Car-GPS/Double-Din-GPS-Navigat…

    • Becomes $369.99 when you change to AU

      • Oh I didn't even realise it was USD. Carry on!

  • Is this the same model on Amazon for $237?
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Eonon-Wireless-Receivers-Bluetooth…

    • +1

Different. Thats the x3 and the model here is the ux6

  • In this price range, from personal experience of installing several head units for friends and family, I find EONON and ATOTO make the best head units. If you only need AA or CP, then there are non-Android models (linux based) that I find are more snappier than their Android based ones. Their ebay stores regularly have good deals, especially when combined with % off codes or listings that allow you to submit offers

    • which brands/models to look at for non-android models? As in EONON and ATOTO have non-android models?

      • Yup those 2

  • +1

From my past experience with EONON, They make OK stereo's, nothing to call home about. The rated output isn't their claimed 22wrms or 25wrms, it's only around 15wrms. The audio chip in these is terrible. sound quality isn't great. You can get a much better Name brand unit with the same features for a little bit more. I tested one of these then plugged in a kenwood and the sound was almost twice as loud and much better sound range. The call quality on these is poor.
For around $400-500 you can get a Kenwood, Sony or Pioneer with wireless carplay/AA that will run a lot smoother. Only reason to get Android is if you plan to install apps and games to use in the car.

  • Sorry folks, do you normally take it to the auto sparkies to get them fitted? Or you DIY them? Wonder how much additional cost are we expecting.

    • -1

I got an auto sparky from gumtree to install the whole thing, including the reverse camera. Costed me $220~ back then.

Old mate did a dodgy job however… reverse camera was so off centre, cabling was very messy.

I recommend using airtasker instead so you can at least see the auto sparky's reviews

    • I would never let anyone else fit it, just take your time and fit it yourself…

  • Does this fit or can someone recommend a cheap screen for a Lexus 2008 Rx 400h. Not keen to spend $1000+ on a Grom headunit

  • Does anyone know who can help install this in a car?
    Any recommendation for an installer?

    • Where are you located? I had two installed in Sydney recently and happy with both. These guys supplied the screen and reverse cameras but I'm sure would quote for install only if you BYO.
