Don't you normally use baby oil?

      • +2

        Too expensive these days!

      • Hey Diddy!

        • Wrong thread, try commenting extra virgin baby oil post

    • Dead joke.

wowowow they gave cobram same rating as Bertoli, no sure I can trust their ratings anymore.

      • +1

        Written like a true Italian

    • Subjective ratings from many seasons ago hardly seem relevant here.
If you're using other flavours in your food then it's even less clear what the olive oil tastes like, ie. If you use herbs, spices, peppers

  • +9

Who's paying $26 for 1L of this oil?

    • +23

You'd be surprised how many people don't care about shopping for specials. I know some that even look down their noses at it, as if it cheapens their status. Unfathomable to this Ozbargainer.

      • +2

They're the reason Colesworth aren't pumping prices even higher so they can 'maintain' their profit margins.

      • +2

I still remember a few years back "news" reports where they interviewed people struggling with cost of living too that they said things like "I even have to buy the meat that's discounted because it's almost expired", like it's some big mark of shame.

… Fine leave more for me! :D

    • +2

      Only 'Headless'

I listen to an Australian podcast, and they were talking about how expensive stuff is, and one said he bought a box of coke cans for $40. The Ozbargainer in me was triggered. Unless you live under a rock, how do I you not know each week either 24 or 30 cans are on special at either supermarket, and it alternatives?

It's like the very first lesson you learn at Ozbargain University.

Get in quick - lowk gonna sell out

    Ask for raincheck

  • Cheaper than home brand.

  • +6

Man i remember when this use to be $6 on sale about 5 years ago, how things have changed

    • +4

Yeah the 4L canisters were $35 normal price

      • +3

Have a faint memory of them being $23 on special yeah..

    • I was literally going to comment the exact same.
The 4L tins that would spill all over the place were $13 on special.

      • +1

They spill less if you pull out the second vent on the top so the tin can breathe.

        • Also, fold a paper towel down to about 3cm and rubber band it around the top of the neck. Then, replace when needed. Stops the bottle from getting oily & slippery.

          :^)

  • It's great. Got it last time. Week buy again.

  • Wouldn’t Aldi’s Australian extra virgin oil be better?

    • Possibly, but at the same time it does cost $5 more at $17.99

      • not cheap

    • We don't know, would it?

    • The Aldi stuff is delicious, it's good enough for salads and bread. This imported stuff is more for cooking imo.

  • +1

Is it made with real virgin olives

    • +3

those olives never lived a life!

    • +1

It is called extra virgin olive oil for the first time the olives are pressed
It is called virgin olive oil for the second time they are pressed
It is called olive oil for every press after the 2nd

I learned this in Italy just a month ago

      • Spoken like an expert presser of virgins!

        • nuts?

      • After first press and still virgin, so it's called extra virgin?

        • After the first press, you lose "extra"

  • -2

    Better than Aussie ones imo

  • What a good way to take your Ozb virginity away. Rub some oil Ja!

  • Is the bottle dark enough?
I think red island and Cobram are darker

    • +1

Keep it in your pantry with the door closed

  • +4

Keep an eye on your Flybuys offers. Yesterday I received a "Coles Basket bonus" offer of 600 bonus points for this very item - "In-store or online … La Española Olive Oil 1L range … Offer valid Tue 29 Jul to Tue 12 Aug 2025. Offer redeemable once."

That effectively brings the price down to $10.

    • +2

Mine gives me 700 bonus points

      • Same here.

  • Why not use it for cooking?!

    • -1

For cooking, refined olive oils are preferred as they have a lighter taste. If you are happy with the flavour you can use this for cooking as well.

      • -1

        Smokes very quickly

    • You can, just buy the "light" variety in store, both are on sale. It has very light flavour designed for cooking, and still extra virgin, so the smoke point might still be lower than refined oil but we use it every day cooking and works great.

  • Guys, which ones are best for just drinking / not cooking? Tnx

    • If you're being serious, Cobram's Ultra Premium range is probably as good as it gets for taste.

      • Yes, I drink a little most days, so I was after quality definitely not after taste.

        • That is interesting, may I ask why?

        • Go in-store and have a look - there was one of La Espaniola's in there that looked like it might be suitable - sorry I can't remember the type.

  • How does it compare to this one: https://www.aldi.com.au/product/the-olive-tree-olive-oil-1l-…

Are some olive oils more for salads/dressing and others better for cooking with?

  • +2

This year both Australian and European olive oil producers are reporting a good harvest. Prices may go back to normal.

    • +5

Not if colesworth have anything to say about it

      • +1

Just go to a Greek or Turkish grocery and buy better EVOO for less.

        • Yeah I do the bulk of my shopping anywhere other than the monopoly that is colesworth. Only buy when there is a large points for spending.

I just recently read that the same major investors own coles and woolworths so it's essentially a faux duopoly. What a rort

          • @Chocobros: That same "major investor" is likely everyone with superannuation and ETFs etc

            • @OzzyBrak: Oh is that what BlackRock and Vanguard are? Makes sense I guess

    • I heard that in the last two years

  • Still waiting for Aus olive oil to go half price…

  • Are Euro olive oils still unregulated and potentially not actually extra virgin?

    https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/oils-ant…

    • +1

I think a lot of Italian ones can "come from various sources" but these Spanish oils are generally single country of origin and certified.

      • "Single country", but is it 100% EVOO? Refined olive oil is much cheaper then extra virgin.

        • Yeah my recollection was that it didn't have to be 100% extra virgin olive oil, it could be a blend but as long as it was majority EVOO it could still be labelled as EVOO

    • +1

They are regulated but there are scams all the time

  • Didnt sell out last time at my local, doubt it'll sell this this time either.

  • -2

This is an amazing price for lube for your insides - drank raw (small shots daily)

If you are male - your general will be super raging happy for incorporating it in along with your workout & diet routine

    • -1

      what did I just read

  • I noticed recently that normal olive oils were all the same price as extra virgin when it used to be much cheaper. Wtf is up with that?

  • Plenty on the shelves yesterday at my local Coles. Thought it was just another oil.

    • Are they trying to clear out short-dated stock with half-price specials?

  • This is half price every 2-3 weeks.

  • Meh. $52 for 4 litres is about average. I guess if you only by a litre at a time it's a good buy!

  • -1

    Hey Virgins!

    Oh sh- how'd know??
