    Sydney ?

You have a stack of other good deals with direct flights from ANA.

      • not really in the jan/feb time period (for obvious reasons, but since melb is getting some deals surely we can too!)

  • Woah I snagged rewards seats for my trip in Sept a few months ago but the prices in taxes were still outrageous especially compared to the full fare here

    • I snagged a JAL business seat last year and paid about $90 in tax. Seems they've raised it to $300+.

Took this route earlier this year. Highly recommend. The layover in Singapore was awesome and the daytime Qantas flight from MEL was really good. Got to fly an old 767 on JAL.

    Perth?

    • Never

      • I know normally it exclude Perth but this time the flight stopped at Singapore and Perth is much closer

        • It is strange it isn't included, may be able to snag a bargain if you look at Per to Singapore and then take advantage of the cheaper Singapore to Japan flights.

Previous years for a family of 6 I have been able to get it down to about 3.5 to 4k, right now I cannot seems ot get anything below 4.5k return.

  • +2

Much prefer direct flights instead of the Singapore layover and added time from diverting the flight.

But the prices are good, decent budget option.

I don't mind going via Singapore, best airport ever!

      • +14

That's fair if you like sitting/shopping in airports… I just hate losing the 4-8 hours or so because of the layover.

Like if you're only going for a week, you've just lost up to 5% of your total travel time doing transit. That's a big chunk.

Yeah, fair point if you put it that way! I agree

    • +1

Singapore layover totally beats the Cairns one that Jetstar uses!

  • Dam, need departure dates from around the 17th of March

    • +1

These dates are on sale for a reason i suppose…. Jan and Feb is cold winter weather, probably slightly colder than peak Melbourne winter in Feb in Tokyo. March onwards it starts to warm up and you start hitting peak travel season.

FWIW, my son flew JAL economy MEL-HND-YVR a couple of weeks ago, said it was most righteous. Good service, food, seats, he had zero complaints.

    • +1

JAL is an S tier full service airline. Love the plum wine they offer in economy, couldn't get enough of it

  • Singapore is a pretty big detour however some of the flights land in Haneda which is handy.
In case of a long layover go to China town and get some frog legs

  • Is there any easy way to stretch the Singapore time to a couple of days (to make the extra flying worthwhile)?

    • +2

Try it with a multi-city search. I searched a MEL-SIN-NRT-MEL route with a 15 hour overnight stop in Singapore in March and it came out to $1132.

  • Oh what the hell.

Booked for late Jan to early Feb into Narita via Singapore. Certainly a long layover, but by far one of the better countries to have a layover in.

It'll be interesting to fly the Qantas A330 into Singapore and the JAL 767. Both aging aircraft.

  • The flights dep BNE seem to have a pretty shocking layover… 16hrs in SGP, from 435pm to 830am… yeahhhh, nahhhhh

  • OP, your link to "Tokyo hotels" takes me to a webpage saying 404 error. So does the link for "Osaka hotels".

  • If it's boeing I ain't going

  • have to take an extra day of leave most likely if you go this route, not really worth it over ANA deals or even direct Qantas flights seem to be around $990
