For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA

Didn't know about the Team Ozbargain thing, does it apply to all orders?

AliExpress is no longer the budget-friendly marketplace it once was. I’ve recently encountered three sellers in a row attempting to extort up to $250 USD on top of the listed shipping fee, just to ship items weighing around 5kg, a completely unreasonable demand.

The support experience has been equally frustrating:
Chat support agents have no authority to resolve disputes.
The resolution team does not review evidence and responds with automated emails.
Even when sellers admit to not shipping items, no meaningful action is taken.
Refund decisions are delayed or ignored, even when deadlines have passed.

Given this, I’ll be extremely cautious about making expensive purchases on AliExpress going forward. I’ll also use PayPal exclusively, as it offers stronger buyer protection and a more reliable dispute process.

  • seems like everything went up in price to compensate the discount code already

It's not price jacking when the Choice sale ended at 4:59pm today. The livestream has been happening every week for months - I just finally got round to sharing it.

      • that makes sense, it was my bad

I just finally got round to sharing it.

        Lol 🙄

        • Haha I didn't mention the shopping credit. I'll leave that to you.

Why does Aliexpress punish me for being a regular? All my prices come up higher than my friends account? I buy regularly.

    • Sure it's the same currency? Incognito check

      ^^ This.

I watch prices and save items too. I notice the price creep.

Oddly, one item i was looking at somehow appeared significantly cheaper so i bought immediately. After buying, the price was inflated well above the earlier save.

      • Yeah I've noticed the same thing, I've put a Jonsbo d32 Pro computer case in my wishlist and it only creeps up in price.

    Limit 1 coupon per account.

You can actually use each coupon twice. Just add it 2 times and will show as 2 coupons

    • Good tip or hack, what did you buy?

Stack them with coins to buy more watches

What do people tend to buy at Ali express rather than Temu / Shein / Amazon? Is it known for any type of deals in particular? Familiar with the name but never bought anything.

Home automation stuff. Cheap and wont break the bank of they dont work as expected. Knock off lego and transformers are good value for items with good ratings.

Wow been here 10 years & never bought anything from Aliexpress, please hand in your OzB membership.

Heh. I was the same, only been buying from AE for about 18 months. The only reason I wanted to dip my toe into the waters was it’s the only place I could find typewriter ribbons at prices that were not highway robbery. Of course, thanks to your esteemed self I’ve now bought several watches as well. :-)

Wristwatches. Chinese made homages of the big brands are surprisingly good, plus there’s a few excellent original designs starting to filter through.

      • This. Ive started my collection of gshock imitation watches. No one really notices the difference. Pay a few bucks each after coupons, shopping credits and coins because of GST.

Also i buy travel chargers and usb 3/4 cables to add to collection

AMD Ryzen CPU's at 65% cheaper vs Aussie stock.
      I've got 3 so far.. 2x 7700 ($210) and 1x 7500F ($175) all working well. I plan to buy more when needed.

I also got topcashback returning me atound $18 to $30 per order making them even cheaper

    • Designer lamps and pendant lighting. Some Aliexpress listing are clearly dupes of famous Danish designs like the AJ Table Lamp. Some listing are the real deal just without the designer sticker - an example is the MUUTO Tip Table Lamp. They retail for AUD$500-$600 in Australian stores, I purchased one for $110 delivered from Aliexpress

Aliexpress is a marketplace with a much bigger range of products, it has a lot if resellers and storefronts with access to taobao/alibaba that is difficult to access outside of china.

Temu is generally one store that incorporated bulk buying power (and strong arming manufactueres) to drive the cheap prices you see on their gamified selling platform and has a fast/trend/fad focus vs aliexpress broad selling platform much bigger range and can find actual brandname stores (anker, ugreen etc). Shein is fast fashion, at a price that should make any buyer question the ethics of the manufacturer/seller let alone the quality of it all.
As for amazon/ebay all that cheap stuff that you see is coming from the same suppliers & resellers on aliexpress most of the time (ali is massive source for drop shipping)

    • Off brand but good quality bike parts
