    Isn't AVG free enough?

    • +4

I used to use AVG, but it constantly tries to harrass/trick you into getting the paid version. Reviews indicated that Microsoft Security Essentials does as good a job if not better, and it's free.

As for performance-tuning software: I thought the world was finally rid of that quackery.

You are spot on with your comment… Security Essentials is the best out there, and free… And yes, tune up software is exactly what defines mallard!

Is it just me or does that seem incredibly expensive for such a basic product?

I'm usually the one defending paid security software on here, but this seems ludicrous.

EDIT For example a higher bundle can be had for $62 on eBay.

    Seems overpriced to me.

    Avg Antivirus here for $33;

The fact that the latest OS it is designed to protect/enhance is only $50 makes all these products overpriced

  • Yeah this is what parents should spend $77 on when their kids go back to school. Not books, shoes, clothes.

    Save your money.

  • Or use one of the many less intrusive and free security softwares out there and start encouraging/teaching your children to browse the internet safely and responsibly.

This looks similar for $34.95 from the PC Authority store: http://store.pcauthority.com.au/p28481-tuneup_utilities_2013…

    • Good pickup. Over half the "special deal price" that AVG themselves are promoting as well as including the higher priced Internet Security product, rather than plain AVG Antivirus!

  • This is not a bargain. The AVG virus scanner has always been and is still offered on the website as a free product. Don't get suckered into paying for it. The other utilities that come with the paid version are not necessary and not worth it.

AVG used to be quite a compact and streamline application and now it's quite a resource hog with a lot of bloatware.

The best alternative freeware these days is Microsoft Security Essentials.

If you really want an extra tool to "tune up" your PC then CCleaner is a good way to go. It will safely clean out all your temporary files, obsolete registry entries, log files etc. It's also a free tool: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

  • AVG Antivirus Free is strictly for non-commercial use.
Having said that I have seen a lot of issues with people who have installed the tuneup software, so I wouldn't recommend this bundle anyway.

  • This is a really bad deal… A lot of antivirus programs (that you still shouldn't use) are almost if not free after cashback. You'd have to be stupid to pay for a "tune up" program. Just use Microsoft's security essentials.

  • I used the paid version of AVG for work pcs for a few years, eventually got sick of it being a cpu hog and clashing with other programs.

MSE ftw. You can't beat free.
