Step into the definitive re-release of two dark spell-casting shooters that shaped the genre.

Forged by Raven Software on a modified DOOM engine, Heretic and Hexen were released in 1994 and 1995, pushing first person shooters into bold new territory. These innovative cult classics introduced groundbreaking features like inventory systems, vertical aiming, and distinct character classes, reshaping first person action games for generations to come. This enhanced restoration makes Heretic + Hexen available to new audiences and long-time fans with expanded accessibility across more platforms and languages than ever before. Whether you're returning to these shadowy realms or discovering them for the first time, an epic legacy awaits.

    Title should say digital owners.

There's no way to prove my CD ownership :(

    • Added.

Steam will accept CD keys from some old titles to prove ownership and add them to your Library. If you have a unique key in the CD case, give it a try !

      • I love them for this

I had supreme commander + forged alliance, when I activated my key for supcom in steam it unlocked the "gold" version which gave me both.

        Huh?

So, fed the key for FA in to the wifes steam account, she gets both games as well.

Welp, I'm trying this with everything I bought physically from now on.

As you said, give it a try!

I actually had the boxed version of the original Hexen. I just have no idea where it went.

    • Still have mine…

    • Funny enough, I vaguely remember a big box coy of it somewhere….

    • Still have mine. That CD audio music . .

  • Console versions! Heck yeah

You'd think that they would also re-release Heretic II by now since Xbox/Microsoft now owns both Bethesda and Activision as they had shared rights over the game back then.

I loved heretic. Couldn't stand Hexen. Anyone else think the same?

Old school FPS games were always a stress relief passtime for me. I wasn't great at them so i would turn on god mode and the all weapons/full ammo cheats and i would go to town blowing the crud out of enemies for a good half hour before bed.

From that point of view, Heretic probably had the better assortment of weapons available in a single play session whilst Hexen had the greater replay value given the different classes.

However, Rise of the Triads was more fun for me… those weapons were crazy.

Of course, peak FPS gaming for me was playing UT99, BF1942 and Serious Sam co-op over LAN with my bro.

    • I actually preferred Hexen.

  • Thanks for sharing this added!

  • Thanks OP!

Just need a hand here - I have these in my Steam library already. When I click on 'Heretic + Hexen' in the library there is an option to 'Play Now' or "Add to Cart for $22.45"

Does something need to be activated for the upgrade?

    Cheers!

    • On my Steam library it just says "Play" with a green button, yes I had the original Heretic + Hexen on steam before, so I got the new Nightdive release for free. May be please restart Steam.

  • Damn, checked my old CD's, no sign of a key, they must have just installed as DOS programs back then

  • Was watching Gmanlives' review of this last night and co-op works great apparently. I can see it working well for Hexen with the 3 classes.

There are also these tomes in game now that lets you change classes in the same playthrough. Interesting QoL addition.
