    I don't think VTi X+ is a hybrid

  • +6

I'm seeing $41k for the base petrol. How are you getting $41,900 for the Hybrid?

  • +11

$42k VTI X+ is not a hybrid. Still good value though.

    Only the $57k RS is.

These ‘reduced’ prices have offered been around for many months now, if not a year.

  • +7

$42k out the door for a full size compact isnt terrible - all four colors cost nothing extra

the car looks pretty complete for the moeny

the turbo 1.5 is kinda torque lite being only 240Nm on a 1,6 ton frame and acceleration and econ arent great but i mean you have a small engine pushing reasonable weight

might want to ask about CVT longevity I guess

    • +8

Have my 2018 version with the same engine and CVT. It’s been great.
Not going to set the world on fire in terms of performance but isn’t a slouch either

  • +5

Not bad value for money. I paid $40k on-road for a 2003 CR-V Sport, 22 years ago. And it came with 15" wheels and only 2 airbags.

    • thats going far far back

we had the 1st and 2nd gen models.. the 2.4 w/ 5 spd auto was surpriisingly ok, the 1st gen 2.0 4 spd was kinda slow but nothing ever ever went wrong in the 5yrs we had both but they had nothing inside besides aircon and central lock

and still sold for $25k with usual km on them!

      • +1

I also had a 1st gen 2000 model (base model), and yes it was slow and rear drum brakes poor. But very smooth and quiet ride, though engine was loud when pushed. The quality of the seat material was also very high, unlike today's cheap cloth typically found in base models.

        • I'm curious to know how you could tell that the rear drum brakes were not good?

          • @Kkuba: I'm not sure, the braking just felt slow to me. When I got the 2nd gen model with rear disc brakes, the braking performance seemed better.

        • +1

I've lived the CRV life hard. Had a 98, then a 2008 as a kid, learnt to drive in the 98. Bought an 01 as an adult with my partner, whos then gone on to buy a 13.

Bloody love them. They wont set the world on fire with performance, but the quality of the japan built ones are rock solid.

      • +1

k24 series engine is probably one of Honda's great engines, had an accord euro with the same engine and the fuel economy on highway was amazing, got it down under 7L/100km quite a few times.

However it chugs through fuel in the city and the 5 spd box gear are a little too long. Great car though and crv is a decent off roader to start with.

        • +1

          Double that in the city?

          • +2

@brawndo: Yeah pretty much, was getting around 13-14 and part of the reason I sold it

    • +1

      $70k in today's dollars!

      • +3

In the UK, the CR-V hybrid is $97,000.

        • +3

I had to google to see if this was right, and it is! Damn!

          £49,930 = $102,909

          That’s crazy.

    • Ah I remember those days. I was 6 when my parents bought a 1999 crv ex-demo for our business. Then it was joined by a 2001, 2006 and 2007 one.

So reliable they wouldn't die. All of them did between 380,000 and 550,000. They all got written off or stolen during their regular use.

      Best cars

    • $29k driveway for CRV model in 2009

    • I paid $36k on-road for a 2008 CR-V Sport. The recomended price was about 42k though. My best new car deal so far. But it was long before Honda introduced their sttupid set price policy.

Oh well, some has to go. Nissan will be before Honda.

      Chinese car manufacturers will consolidate.

Not sure how many of the Europeans will be remaining in a few years.

      • +24

honda are at least doing well in the us and that's all they care about

nissan are about to recall 400,000 of their shitty e-force whatever variable compression 3 cyl turbo 1.5 whatever nonsense

the germans should be ok because rich people will always love their shit

the french and stellantis are cooked - renault is eating major shit because their stock in nissan is too high

i dont feel sorry for any of them… if you see the slow moving iceberg and you still plough in that's on them

        • shitty e-force whatever variable compression 3 cyl turbo 1.5 whatever petrol generator nonsense

          Fixed it for you.

          • +5

@Murpha: More referring to their P&L, or financial so to speak. If anything Nisan will fold before Honda.

          • +16

            @Murpha: let me counter:

Honda brand sales in the USA in 2024 increased by 11.1% to 1,291,490 units. Three models finished #1 in segment (Civic, Pilot, Odyssey) while the best-ever sales in the US were recorded for the CR-V, HR-V and electrified models.

            ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

In Australia, approximately 1.2 million new vehicles are sold each year. This figure represents a strong market, with a record of 1,237,287 new vehicles sold in 2024

            ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

In Australia, Honda sold 14,092 vehicles in 2024. This was a 2.6% inIcrease compared to 2023, but still significantly lower than their peak sales.

            ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

so they sell as many cars in the US as Australia buys as whole… from everyone… yeah they suck all right…

            going bankrupt any day now

honda sells more in one pissy little state like say West Virginia than Australia as a whiole… one wonders why they even bother here

            • -1

              @tonyjzx: 5 years max

            • @tonyjzx: Honda sales were worse back in the mid 80s, I believe they were only selling 7 or 8 thousand new cars in Australia at that time.

              • +5

@MrZ: i think i'm caught up in the era when they sold the accord v6, accord euro and crv and they were pretty much a one stop shop for quality cars that drove nice and were reliable

i dunno about integras or civic type-R because i'm not into that shit but lots of people are

            • @tonyjzx: Agreed they're doing well in sales, but the quality of the product, which I was alluding to, not so much. Google this and you'll find plenty of complaints, particularly around the L15 motor, which was found in a lot of local petrol variants. Another common complaint was oil dilution. This has been going on for years now. Teardown videos give an interesting insight to the issues at hand.

While I was definitely light on argument, I'm disappointed that I was negged trying to alert people to potential issues with the motor design.

          • +1

@Murpha: I bought the new model with the current gen engine in 2017. Traded it in with the CX5 two years later because there was an overwhelming issue with oil dilution in two of their biggest market China and the US. Despite the low KMs and top spec, the Mazda dealer had trouble selling the car afterwards. Honda's reason was the engine was designed in a way to help it running when it is cold. Unfortunately, we rarely do long commute and the report from overseas owners didn't discriminate. I didn't want to wait until it was out of warranty before finding it out the hard way.

On the other hand, we still have the 2012 RE CRV that I love because of low maintenance and reliability which I bought for less than $30K with the tow bar fitted.

        • Agreed. When Honda or more specifically Stephen Collins, decided to go the Merc way, my thought was I'm done with them. He left the company not long after. The sales are proof of the pudding that people still like to haggle.

        • Trump is bringing them home to US, treat them well, and make them become US own sooner or later.

        Making 30bn is bankrupt? lmao

        • "Making 30bn is bankrupt?"

What's the ROE? Debt? A single number doesn't say much.

It is inevitable that some will go, but Nissan will go before Honda.

          • @SetTheFaqUp:

            What's the ROE?

has nothing to do with 'going bankrupt' ROE is for shareholders as you want to measure your returns on the ROE

you cannot go bankrupt if you are 'turning a net profit' as net profit would include any interest repayments on debt…..

that isnt saying Honda can't go bankrupt but they arent going bankrupt anytime soon if anything they might reduce or withdraw from Australia like a number of other brands have but that could be true for any car brand in Australia bar Toyota as the market is so competitive and small

        • Honda has declared its intention to remain in Australia, despite earlier speculation about a potential withdrawal.

Looks like they make commitment and put more money in to stay. Hope they can stay.

    • I think Honda still popular in the scooter and motorbike scene though

I honestly think people should boycott them to teach those small-brained execs a lesson for those bad decisons one after another 1. getting rid of the Odyssey and Jazz, 2. introducing that moronic fixed pricing and 3, the biggest and dumbest decision of all is not having a base model Civic, instead the cheapest Civic is 50K. Absolutely bonkers.

    • Jazz was dropped due to safety standards, no?

Cheapest civic is the turbo model at like 45k. Hybrid entry is 50. 55 for lx.

I own the LX hybrid 2024 model. It costs more than an equiv camry. But drives significantly better with a more premium interior.. Smaller tho. Eh.

      • They only sell the Hybrid Civics now. 50K. They still sell the new gen Jazz in New Zealand and Thailand and a few other countries.

        • -1

Oh. Didn't know that. Interesting. Makes sense I guess.. I do agree it's about 5k too exxy for both models. Still love mine, though..

    • +14

whats wrong with fixed pricing? It should be more efficient to operate with far fewer dealerships and salespeople competing for commissions. Each dealership also has to spend money on marketing, rent, and other overheads, which ultimately gets passed down to consumers.

The inventory system is a mess too. If you call up toyota and ask about wait times for a rav4, it could range from one month to six months for the same car, depending on each dealership’s monthly allocation.

The worst part is the lack of price transparency. I ordered a RAV4 in 2022 and received it in 2023. The dealership told me I had to pay an extra $3k because the newer model was more expensive. Luckily, I knew the actual increase was only $1-2k from online articles, so I caught onto their BS.

So yeah, the dealership model has major flaws

      • +2

I have no issues with the fixed pricing model.

But you can have fixed prices with low, medium or high profit margins (and hence prices).

They went with high profit margins and high prices.

The only Honda I would consider buying new today is the Civic Type R. It’s a great car and its competitors are just as pricey, if not more.

        • -1

I am the opposite and have very big issue with it. As if charging horrendous service cost isn't enough. Like Ford and I'd assume most other brands, charged $400 for what's basically an oil change. I want to have some of those money saved through negotiation when buying the car.

          • +1

@Deal Or-No Deal: What are you on about? Who is charging horrendous service cost?

Honda probably has the cheapest fixed priced servicing around. Cheaper than Toyota.

            https://www.honda.com.au/why-honda/the-honda-experience

When you purchase your new Honda, you'll get your first five standard scheduled Honda services for just $199 each.

            • @JimB: Funny how you didn't state it only applies for the first 5 years. Are you only going to keep your car for 5 years, how much money do you think you save for those 5 years vs discount when haggling, for what's basically an oil change maybe an air filter with it once or twice? what's going to happen after that. Last time I counted I had the RE 2012 for 13 years. With cars getting more complicated and warranty up to 8 years, it is easier to get the dealer to service the car. Watch how the service cost suddenly jumped after that.

              • @Deal Or-No Deal: I did state five years.

When you purchase your new Honda, you'll get your first five standard scheduled Honda services for just $199 each.

After 5 years/warranty is up, I usually service the car myself anyway. Otherwise take it to a specialist.

There’s nothing complicated about an oil and filterS change.

Honda is garbage they have numerous recalls all over the world will soon become holden 2.0
Dont fall for their Honda 3.99% offer 0% deposit ad. One of my friend payed 1000$ deposit never got it back. Their credit requirements were unbelievable even with a 30% deposit they refused loan. Honda dealers are like wolfs literally and honda is wolf pack leader.

All these opinions on how bad these cars have probably never seriously looked at them . They are far beyond a lot of other mid size SUV’s in design, quality, ride . These are amazing cars . Honda builds quality, has and will continue to do the same . They aren’t going anywhere

    • +5

Same broken record comments from five, ten years ago.

It’s beating a dead horse mentality.

Jazz, as much as I like it (and owned one with another in the family) was not profitable for Australian operations and the current spec even worse on the balance sheet hence move to HR-V and ZR-V with better margins.

Those who say the Civic is too expensive are comparing it to older models and have never been in the new one with nicer spec and interior. The difference between current Type-R and previous model is night and day.

      Looking forward to the Prelude.

      • +1

I’m a big fan of the Civic Type R but the Prelude will be a huge disappointment if you’re expecting a sports car.

The rest of the Honda range is overpriced for what you get.

        • absolutely not!. try actually going to have a look AND a drive in them ..

          • @Shampwho: No doubt they are quality cars but other than the Civic type r, are underpowered for the price.

Don’t even start on the CVT.

Nothing wrong with them but I prefer more powerful cars.

Value is subjective but their drop in sales since increasing prices cannot be disputed

            • @JimB: Drop in sales has a lot to do with changing to a fixed price model and therefore closing a lot of their dealerships, only having a few showrooms now . They will increase again though .

              • @Shampwho: ‘Drop in sales has a lot to do with changing to a fixed price model and therefore closing a lot of their dealerships’

                That’s misleading.

The drop in sales is due to value and price alone. Not fixed price. Not number of dealers.

                https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/vfacts-2024-new-vehicl…

                Honda has 90 dealers.

Tesla also has fixed prices and only have 13 showrooms/dealers in Australia and has more than double the number of sales.

When Honda changed to the agency model in Australia, they admitted they were looking to increase their margins and expected to sell fewer cars. I don’t think they predicted their sales would plummet.

I like Honda and they make good cars- I don’t have an issue with the agency model of fixed prices but there’s no doubt Honda is overpriced compared to other Japanese brands.

The same thing happened to Merc.

Tesla and BYD are selling well due to value for money, not due to or despite the agency model.

Honda increase in sales number will increase again when their sell better value for money cars.

                • @JimB: if you think honda is overpriced compared to other japanese brands, then you clearly havent looked in a long time…they are anything but overpriced…in fact they are likely more affordable….compare the crv to the cx5 or the rav 4 ..

it is definately not misleading to say that agency model has led to decrease in sales…it is definately a big factor…

to compare honda (a legacy manufacturer) to tesla or byd simply becuase they are fixed price is much more misleading…they operate in completely different ways, and most of the time appeal to completely different buyers

      • +1

Jazz was dropped because Honda thought their new model wouldn’t sell well. They essentially only offer hybrid models now and it’s pushed the price up past the $30k point for a Jazz. They didn’t think it would sell so dropped it. Real shame as anyone who’s ever owned a jazz can attest to the fact it’s a really good car.

        • +1

Well a Yaris is hovering around 30k now anyway. There's really not much at this price point anymore unless you go made in China.

      • They need to bring back the crx

      • +2

No, the Civic is expensive because they've consolidated the entire line into a single top spec model which not every buyer wants/needs.

Too many cars these days have crap 'fake leather' (vegan leather) with a sales pitch of "ohh, environmental friendly" crap nonsense. It all reads of greed and 'let's cut costs but increase prices' deceit.

    • because rav4 are a rip for what you get

      • This CRV is not a hybrid.

        • -3

hybrid is overrated would never buy one

    • crv drives better, has better features, better quality of life/interior setup…more spacious. many reasons

  • Some years ago, CRVs destined for Australia were shipped from their Thailand plant, while the Kiwis in NZ got the made in Japan variant. Is that still the case?

  • +1

Have had a civic, 2 x odysseys and a crv, all bought new, no issues with any of them.

  • +1

I like the seats in a Honda CRV, can really adjust them a lot to get the right fit for your body type, also the spaciousness is quite nice in the back seats. Theres not much i can say bad about the car, if a little underpowered vs a Rav4, but i value how good my drivers seat is over other features a lot.

I find they probably needed to do more like a $5,000 cut to price and then it becomes palatable to buy a 2024 model over other alternatives.
