As someone who eats rice everyday, I must warn that this cooker is trash. It will blow out small drops of water while cooking (and everything near it will have a white layer of rice droplets). Also, if you leave rice on warm mode for more than 6 hours, it dries out. With good cooker, the quality is still decent after 2-3 days on warm. So do yourself a favour and save $9.

      • I'm not sure what to do, my previous rice cooker was a tiger $300+ unit which lasted about 3 yrs?

Then i bought this pos for next to nothing and it can't keep Rice warm without making it crispy. It's tolerable… But I still can't bring myself to buy another $300+ unit.

        What to do lol

        • Get another Japanese cooker or Cuckoo (Korean). All are better than this $9 junk :)

          • @raperozbargain: Suggestions?

            I don't like the thought of a $300 cooker lasting 3 years

  • +3

Read the reviews, one blew up and one short-circuited 🤔

I was going to ask what this does that my tiger doesn't, now I know. Cheers

Christmas presents sorted. Thanks OP. ;)

Mine is running for at least 3 years now and is a work horse lol

      • +3

same, works the same as it did 3 years ago and gets used at least once a week

      • we've had ours for over 5 years, thing is built like a nokia

        • +1

Had mine for 7 years. Been using it for 4 to 7 days per week for 6 years. Then my wife don’t like to cook in 14 dollars rice cooker. She buys 150 dollar all in one cooker and throw out still working rice cooker.

          • @dadeadman: about to be in the same situation, i'm trying hard to hold it off

note mines at 6 years mark as well.

      That’s the bomb!!

The two Anko rice cookers I've had did the same, seems QC differs significantly because some people have no problems and others have near misses with the home and contents insurance. YMMV, this is the way.

      • I run it outside the house BTW lol

        Saves excess humidity

there was a content creator who review Kmart's product
"it either 3 days or 3 years, nothing in between"

      • Do you wipe the bottom of the rice bowl after washing rice? Iirc these models don’t seal between the heater element and the bottom, water can get down there.

    • Mate, I read the reviews, allright?
The bloody thing short 'circutated', so it's not that bad. 😂

    • What do you expect, it is anko?

2:3 rice to water. 5 minutes at full power, 15 minutes at 50% power in the microwave. damn good rice without needing a single purpose gadget

Owned one for many years after buying orignally as a stand in for finding a 'decent' one. It cooks rice. Still running 8 year later.

    • Yup, had one for over 3 years now. We use it almost every night. Can't fault it.

    • The one from original Target is better.

Check Kmart as well, it's still available in some states. If it says 'This popular item has sold out online' then it's not available in yours. Make sure your store/delivery location is set.

  • The Teflon is starting to come off ours already after 6 months. Wonder if they sell just the pan bit? Don't really want to through it the whole thing after just 6 months

A cheap rice cooker makes good quality rice taste cheap.
Don't waste your money on cheap rice cooker. Either cook it some other way or buy a good quality rice cooker.

    • Which quality ones do you recommend?

In the middle to upper range the Panasonic were very good. At the top end you need to buy one of the Japanese imports that cost over $500. Only a few people would notice the difference between the Panasonic and the top end ones.

        • I regularly buy bargains that have gone up by $120.

    • No I have this (the 5 cup version) and it works just as well as our posh one.

    • +1

Really? I was under the impression that a rice cooker is a rice cooker, and this was an appliance you could cheap out on.

      • Sounds like some people can't taste or feel in their mouth the difference between out of date, poorly stored rice, over cooked, under cooked or rice that was meant for animal feed. If people can't taste the difference or don't care, then that's fine, but most people can taste the difference even if they can't tell why the rice doesn't taste right.

    • +1

People have different standards. This cooker might not be beneficial for you but I'd argue a lot of people either don't care or can't tell the difference.

Always had this rice cooker. Dont know any better. It cooks rice. Ignorance is bliss.

  • I find this general design just spills water everywhere.

    • With this design you also need to buy an Anko tea towel to throw over the top to catch the splatters

  • My local Woolies have the Adesso brand rice Cooper's on clearance for $12 down from $30. Website still says $30. Not sure if Adesso is any better than Anko but might be worth checking out.

    • Got it at $6 at our local, its a 5-cup, so pretty small but has survivied 3x cooks so far with nice results.

Super quick (maybe 15mins or so for 2 cups white).

Horrendous smell from production materials still (residual smell still), ive done all cooks outaide the house so far til it calms down. 😵

  • I used to buy these, but got annoyed at the coating starting to flake off after a year or so. I've had a Cuckoo for a couple of years now and it's showing no signs of deterioration. Much better build quality, and it cooks the rice better too. It never leaves a layer of crusty, chewy rice on the bottom like the cheap ones do.

    • I have had this rice cooker over 8 years now, use it every week and it still looks new, coating is 100%. It's obviously the way you look after it or clean it as to why the coating flaked off. Learn how to take care of the appliances you buy. You can't just scrub the coating or put it in a dishwasher. Never had issues with sticky rice when you put the right amount of water in it. Obviously your more expensive one is just more forgiving.

  • I've had this rice cooker for years, there is two scenarios, you buy one and it's either DOA or about to be DOA after using it for the first time or it lasts forever. I've bought this rice cooker twice, second time because I broke it by dropping, second one has lasted over 8 years now and still looks new. When I bought the second, I had to take the first one back as the thing burnt out the first time I turned it on lol. Same with a kettle I bought years ago, first one was DOA, replacement still going strong.

  • Mum and I have been using these for many years without a problem. We bought mum a fancy rice cooker for mother's day one year. And she hates it. The Kmart one cooks rice faster, the only thing she likes about the fancy one is that it can make congee (rice porridge).

I do I have to agree with shortcomings, it does spit out cloudy water from the vent hole (really bad when cooking brown rice), and the keep warm function shouldn't be used for more than 30 mins
