I signed up last night with this guide, $28.64 for 6 months = ~$4.77 per month.

Some of the unpopular netflix stuff isn't available, like Justin Willman: Magic Lover but I'm still playing around with the various add-ons.

      • +4

        Definitely available. Keep searching

        • +1

What add-on do you have? Is it available on yours? I've only added the one from guide.

      • +7

        Everything's available on the internet

Going up for you. Not sure how long it takes to be picked up from your side though.

    • Got RD working with Plex. Struggling to get watchlist sync working.

      • Work with Plex in what way?

    • The answer is to stop watching junk - most of what is on Netflix is just trash.

Spend your valuable time doing meaningful things instead of consuming garbage that kills your brain cells. Spend time with family, pick up a hobby, play sports, read a book, learn a new skill, catch up with old friends, see a real movie in cinemas…etc.

I see Netflix as a very discretionary item, and anyone signing is making their own choice.

I have sailed the High Seas since the 2000's.

    • My sailing skills are stuck in the mid 2000s. PM me if you know any handy resources to update approach.

Check out the first post in this thread.

      • +2

First post. Realdebrid or similar and streamio or similar.

        • Yup after all the stremio/redebrid comments over last year i took plunge a few months ago. Fantastic way to cheaply and easily watch pretty much everything my fam wants.

    • +15

Used to sail the high seas until about 2014ish. Then converted to netflix, up until about a year and a half ago when eveyone started chucking ads on their paid subscription models. Add to that the fact that people who have paid certain companies (google, etc) to "buy" movies, only for it to be removed once that company loses the rights to stream the movie…

I've taken the eye patch up again…

      • +1

I've always kept the eye patch close at hand, as this day was always going to come around again.
They can help themselves, they always end up getting too greedy and shooting themselves in the foot.

      • +1

Haven't sailed for a time, but the sea is calling. What are the best ways to get back into it?

        • 1337 still works… I'm old school.

    • +1

Well to be fair the only way to find One Piece is through the High seas. If you're a land sheep you won't get anywhere 😉.

      • Up to Season 8, the seasons and episode numbering is dead on.

Companies are obliged to make as much money as possible. They didn't just discover greed in the last 2 weeks.

Either keep paying (I bet you will) or don't keep paying. If enough people don't keep paying, they might reduce prices. Or if the price stays high, it becomes viable for more streaming services to enter the market, increasing competition.

    • -2

Companies are obliged to make as much money as possible.

      Source?

      • +11

The concept of "fiduciary duty": officers of a public company have a duty to act in the best interests of its shareholders.

I don't like what Netflix is doing, and the proper way to go about things as a consumer is to punish the company by cancelling subscriptions, rather than, say, blame the company for trying to grow Netflix profits and share price.

        • officers of a public company have a duty to act in the best interests of its shareholders.

That does not necessarilly mean to make more money…

          • +2

@jv: There'll be exceptions of course, when raising prices and boosting profits is not in the best interests of shareholders. Such as instances where the loss of customers as a result ends up seeing the company making less profit over the long term. But in general, I think 'making as much money/profit as possible' is how you put into practice a duty to act in the best interests of shareholders.

          • @jv: You think shareholders buy shares for fun? It's called shareholder wealth maximisation

            • @ankti231:

You think shareholders buy shares for fun?

Lots of companies are not public so don't sell shares.

        • the best interests of its shareholders

          There's the problem.

          • @smartazz104: I mean, that's where the money comes from for them to start up. How do you propose a company can come into existence, if nobody is allowed to contribute money to start it?

      • +1

        Wait, Netflix is a charity???

      • +2

Money can be exchanged for goods and services.

  • +11

Will I cancel? Nope, because I cancelled years ago… Do you want more piracy, because this is how you get more piracy.

    • Piracy doesn’t seem to hurt their share price

      • +4

        Then no one loses :)

Netflix has to pay for stinkers like The Electric State somehow.

  • If you're not fussed about HD, random glitches or weird advertisements, there's plenty of Chinese sites offering the same content for free.

    • +3

      Or fussed with keyloggers

    • If you're not fussed about HD, random glitches or weird advertisements

If people were concerned about that, they wouldn't have signed up with Netflix in the first place…

  • +6

cancelled years ago since the crackdown. Doesn't feel like i'm missing out on much unfortunately for them…

need new poll option for cancelled long before

    • +2

Why unfortunate? Their share price reached an all time high last month so doesn’t seem they are struggling for subscribers or revenue

      • Great, so on paper, Netflix looks great.

        • That paper makes a lot of people money. If that paper says Netflix is worth $1200 and I bought it previously when that paper said it was worth $100 then I’ve made a lot of real money.

          • +1

@illusion99: Not until you sell the paper.

            • @tenpercent: Nothing prevents you from selling the paper except your own greed

              • @illusion99:

Nothing prevents you from selling the paper

It's your paper. I didn't think you'd appreciate me selling it.

  • If its on Netflix, it's bounty 🏴‍☠️

Also, just use it over Xmas.

  • +2

With all these price increases I've yet to see any improvement in their dismal content.

    • +1

You mean you didn’t like Better Late Than Single??

    • +1

New quality shows/movies are definitely becoming rare on Netflix. I'm starting to think even Apple TV+ is bring out new decent content at a faster rate than Netflix. Amazon Prime is possibly even worse than Netflix nowadays.

  • Corporate greed or human stupidity?

    • The latter would be the root, the former is the symptom. The incapacity to see and plan for the long game, due to the fact that the leadership gets replaced relatively short term, there is no incentive for them to optimise for the long run.

  • $9.99 divided by 10 users isn't too bad.

    • Why stop at 10?

      • +2

        It's easy to divide by.

  • I just cancelled. I like paying for content when the service is good but this is a bit much.

I set up jellyfin on my NAS server and the UI isn't as slick but it's not a big deal. The 4k streams could be a bit compressed on Netflix so having proper blueray rips for well produced movies is really nice.l

    • The Kodi Jellyfin add on is really good if you want a nice interface. Though you also then need a nice Kodi skin such as Arctic Fuse

  • -1

Personally I use Stremio etc, but the other half likes to watch Netflix. Otherwise I'd cancel. She wouldn't be able to figure out the alternatives.

    • +2

      Can’t you teach her

      • +3

        No.

        • -1

          Why

          • +5

@illusion99: Don't you have one? You should know how that usually plays out

            • @Brakus: I mean to use stremio once you set it up is 1. Search for show/movie you want. 2. Click on the show. 3. Click on the first stream option to start playing.

Netflix is the exact same process except for step 3 which is literally a button press.

The extra user outside the home charge also went up.

  • I only keep the ad version of Netflix for the kids for ease of use. I have Stremio but I haven’t figured out a way to hide all the bad stuff from the kids so they don’t use it.

    • -3

Kids are gonna get to the bad stuff one day regardless of what you do

      • true but the age makes a big difference.

  • It honestly does not matter is what I've learned. The people who are willing to pay for it continue to pay for it, those who don't, figure out it and end up pirating. Same thing with people who watch ads on YouTube.

Pirating has never gone away and probably never will.

    • True. And the pirates are deluding themselves that they are sticking it to the man and the companies are suffering losing their business. When the pirates make up such an insignificant portion of potential revenue it’s not even a rounding error on the books

  • I'm going to give up Disney+ soon. For simplicity I let the person I'm sharing with claim the household, and I forward the code to them automatically. But getting it to login is a pain, it keeps asking me for a code, meaning the sharer also gets the code and they don't know if it's me or one of their kids at a friend's house or what. At a certain point it will refuse to let you even log in with a code, but if you delete and reinstall the app it lets you log in again. It's such a pain that just getting a paid IP TV service is looking more attractive. Probably easier to share too.

    • The content on Disney is quite good and we split it three ways, but they keep hiking their prices for oremium, up $50 this year.
