Got mine today, just waiting on RAM, be warned, ECC is rare, hard to find and expensive, this wont work with 2x48 non ecc sticks but will work with 2x64 sticks (about 600 bux)

will work with 1x48 stick, seems to be a CPU limitation.

if your interested in this, also look at the minisforum n5 pro nas… similar price, better CPU, has a pcie, but 1 less 3.5 drive slots (and less nvme drives) and no SFP+ are the main differences, n5 is a couple hundred more if you can find coupon codes for it, much more if you cant. (the CPU is pretty powerful) it also has an NPU , combined with the GPU that gives you 80TOPS for AI, where as this has about 40, so the n5 is much more powerful, if you have a PC you can run with a decent graphics card, it will blow this out of the water though.

I got this due to price, and should do nicely.

with all that said, I would say this is a dupe of
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/918025
same shop, different codes. less than the amount of time… even if it is a bit cheaper?

still waiting on non second hand, enterprise or NAS drives to go on sale at 25 bux per TB or less. i think it will happen in one of the sales, but how long will i need to wait.

one more thing about this, top cashback says it doesnt work with coupons? it didnt track for me a week or so ago…

    • with all that said, I would say this is a dupe of

The only way this could be a dupe is if the price was the same or very close within a few dollars. If it were the latter exceptions may be made depending on the popularity and moderator discretion.

one more thing about this, top cashback says it doesnt work with coupons? it didnt track for me a week or so ago…

TCB AU will track with coupon usage if the product is affiliated. TCB US will not.

      • to clarify, TCB AU did not track for me.

      Just a heads up,
looks like 96gb (2x48) non ecc is working according to a few people now from Reddit. CT2K48G56C46S5 is the specific kit.

Actually works out to be the best value for ram from local brick and mortar stores atm. One person's claimed compatibility issues with the Crucial 64GB kit CT2K32G56C46S5, but general consensus seems to be that was an isolated case. Although noone else has confirmed compatiblity with that specific model.

      • just bought this with next day shipping:

        https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0C79K5VGZ?smid=A4XRJ8S0WXSO0&r…

i doubt it will be next day but we will see…

what a cracking deal though, on amazon, the 128GB is 556, this is 321 (+8 for express shipping)
so basically just over 40% less, for only 25% less memory.

should be able to return, minus the shipping costs… if it does work, thats 30 bux wasted on some 16GB sodimms, can probably sell them to someone here for what i paid though - only 30 bux. good for testing etc.

i did kinda want ecc though…. but $$$… again, now just for some new hdd deals… looking for 16s but would probably take 8s. i rekon we will get a 25 per TB deal in the future.

update order cancelled, no option for express shipping apparently.(spoke with support) it works fine with standard delivery though.

        • I hope it's not like an issue when it goes to write above say 90gb ram it crashes..

From what I've seen though, people have run full men tests on it, so hopefully ok….

          • @wisc: yee, looks like maybe it could of been helped with the recent bios update but no changelog to confirm. But appears to be completely stable from a few different reports.

Similar boat, preferably chasing ECC but given pricing will likely opt for either the 64 or 96. Likely will end up settling on the 96, will report back when I get my hands on a set.

            • @snore: Will let you know when mine lands… Not expected until 2nd of September now though.

I should have 16 from tomorrow or Wednesday to keep me going until then.

    • This model supports ECC?

      • yes, very much so

  • Any info on 10G SFP+ to RJ45 Transceiver compatibility? Is there any of the affordable ones on ALiEx that is known to work?

    • have a look at the website and the ali listing, its basically anything that supports the intel x710 - would assume most would work…I was thinking about getting one of the DAC from amazon.

      • I know, but I was hoping someone could recommend one that works for sure, as I don't want to go down the compatibility rabbit hole. Been there too many times over the years hahaha.

        • +1

yeah fair enough, guess if you get one from amazon, and it doesn't work, you can return it pretty easy, Im going to test one in the next couple of days just need to wait for my ram, but i just got these 10GB ones from an old work server, so no idea where you can get them from going forward, but the chipset is pretty popular, so should be easy enough to find what it supports from a quick google.

    • Most of the time the issue with the transceivers happens on the switch side.

I got some x710 cards and I have used Mellanox and fs DAC cables with them with no issue.

      I would risk it.

      • +1

Thanks, I need to think about it… I'll probably decide when it's sold out :D

    • Or you could buy more local. Yamazaki SFPs can be programmed (by the vendors) so it's compatible for your device. Alternatively, if you find an SFP you like, you can generally ask if it can be programmed to suit your device.

      • Or go the "compatible with everything" option, which in my experience generally means everyone except Cisco. That said BASE-T transceivers

Highly recommended avoiding any copper based solutions (be it DAC - the worst offender - or BASE-T transceivers), particularly in a space constrained machine like this, as heat is a real problem..

Only if purely reliant on existing copper, with no easy alternative to optics. They're significantly cheaper and much more friendly with their inter compatibility .

    Awesome deal

  • Does they have a software, Is it good with IOS? Or need to buy pureNAS?

  • I was only able to apply AOOSTAR08 - but the price came down to usd$622.46 - with the cashback is that the best deal here? I wasn't able to apply the OZB team code either.

RAM for it, if you only need 32GB:

    • +1

I dont believe thats proper ECC memory based off the price, but I'm going to risk it as amazon will probably make it worth it regardless.

    • In product details & specifications it says non-ecc.

  • Am i missing something? i can only add one coupon code at the time

    • Does it reject one or the other? That's a first! Try clicking on the "US $80.00 off on US $569.00" red banner under the price and collecting the AOOSTAR08 coupon.

  • yeah, it only asked me i can use one, so it tells me i will lose the discount. confirming the final price should be $624.84 USD?

  • Unfortunately with the price of HDs, this is a solution looking for a problem. :(

  • Am I correct in assuming Aliexpress doesn't appear to be charging GST on this? Is this because the total original sale price is over AUD $1,000? and ill be paying GST on import?

    • +1

Because the before coupon price is above A$1000 no GST. Since you're paying less than A$1000 you shouldn't have to pay customs tax.

  • Managed to get it down to ~$966 with a coupon code in the app for $100 off. Hopefully they actually ship it this time!

    • Does it stack with the cashback?

      • I didn't use any cashback.

  • With the similar price, you can buy a brand new low end gaming pc like 12400f + 3060 etc, then you can put the hard disks inside the computer case. That one would provide an overall better performance if you would like to do some game streaming etc. i personally always use retired gaming pc as a nas

    • Very few offer more than a couple 3.5" mounts these days. Fractal Design Define is one of the options.

    • +1

power usage is probably the biggest one, but if your looking for basic gaming go the n5 pro nas, or be prepared to buy a oculink adapter.

    • My used intel gaming PC doesn't have two SFP ports, two 2.5gbe ports, oculink, DDR5 ECC memory, low power usage, and this many bays. Very different kind of computer.

  • I can't apply IFPA9KYF? $1121 is best price

  • Just need a budget 4 bay one for under $500 for personal data. Currently using an old pc working ok.

  • What are people using these for? obviously home media, backups etc but with all this power?

    • Some people share streaming media on a website maybe?

    • have a look at the last thread:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16783764/redir

same question asked, some fantastic answers in there.

    • VMs, VMs and more VMs

    • I'm in the same boat, and If we're asking this question, we obviously don't need one :D
I mean, I have 26TB in my main PC anyway, so all my movies just go on there, plexed to the loungeroom, only downside is my PC needs to be on, but it's not an issue.
Ive been looking at NAS's for years, i just can't justify pulling the trigger.

  • +1

Just built my first custom NAS today, setting up unraid. I considered the WTR max but figured if anything went wrong, it would be a nightmare to sort out with their support. This way if any component of the PC fails I can easily replace it.

    • Mind sharing your build, out of curiosity? I'm maybe looking to build out a self-built NAS as an alternative to getting one of these.

      • Unraid will pretty much run on any hardware, old and new.

What are your needs for the NAS? that will help determine the build.

Get a fractal define or Jonsbo N3/N5 case and go from there.

        • ECC, low power consumption. I have a big old synology for my media, this is for de-clouding my life which means a little bit more horsepower than the glorified celeron in the synology and less of an emphasis on voluminous storage.

The ECC requirement is because I plan on putting things I really care about on it, and I’ve heard horror stories of things going wrong over time with ZFS.

      • I’m not an expert in such things and it was a huge rabbit hole to go down. I was looking at dedicated nas cases like the Jonsbo N4 but read a bunch of complaints about it. I ended up finding some old stock mid tower PC case from umart that can a bunch of 3.5 drives plus extra if converting the 5.25 drive bays. Hardware wise I went with a m atx motherboard and intel i5 13400. Overall it was cheaper than the WTR max but without the aesthetics and size of the WTR and a far less powerful iGPU however I will be using Quick Sync for transcoding

        • N4 is bad, which is why I only listed N3 & N5.

          • @impoze: N5 is expensive, $320. N3 only takes ITX I believe which is more expensive and cramped than M-ATX Mobos. My case was only $99. Goal was to be low cost but still have processing power. But yeah the Jonsbo are definitely a more elegant solution

  • A batch of refurbed (presumably) 14TB WD Purples are currently available on AliExpress for $230 after coins and coupons for anyone looking for NAS drives.

    • Hm link?

      • +1

Don't do it!!! You'll regret it!

        • Yep. Store has sub 95% rating so I dare not post it lest it offend again.

That said, searching “WD 14tb Purple” should point the way for anyone looking to walk on the wild side…

  • Holding out for better pricing via Amazon, although I doubt it’ll be as low as AliExpress + coupon + cashback …hopefully land something decent for Black Friday!

  • i might be one of the few, but i plan to use Windows 11. Can i run hyper-v on it?

Also does anyone know which power supply it uses? In my experience, the old pcs that are primarily used for storage and run continuously, the power supply tends to die on themw which i can easily replace.
Buying with a boxed solution like this, i wonder about the PSU replacement.

And the other aspect is warranty. Does anyone know how its like to deal with Ali Express on such things? never bought an expensive electronic item from them before.

    Thanks

  • I purchased this unit from the last sale. paid slightly more. I was a little nervous as some users were reporting quality issues.

So far… everything has been working great. I've installed Unraid, 64gb DDR5 ram, 2x 1gb nvme (cache) and 4x8tb wd nas drives (1 being parity).

configuration was straight forward and chat gpt helped on more complicated settings :)

    • Nice. Can you use any of the front/back usb ports to load the Unraid os?

(Terramaster Nas I think you needed to open it up and swap the original usb plugged directly on the motherboard to use unraid)

      • there are 2 usb ports at the back, one at the front and a usbc from memory. I have small verbatim 8gb on the back of mine. seems to be working well.

    • What drives did you go for? Hasn't been a decent deal on them for a while…

      • Scorptec have WD Red for $279 (save $40) and if you buy 2 at the same time you get a $25egift card. They have the egift card for higher storage limits, but i think the 8tb is the sweet spot.

  • what do you start with as the base OS? something like TrueNas?

    • take your pick

      • Proxmox
      • TrueNAS
      • Unraid
      • OMV
      • Casa/Zima
      • FreeNAS
      • Xpenology Arc
      • Esxi - now that it's free again.
        Xcp-ng
        Windows

    • i opted for Unraid. It was a straightforward process.

      • licenses are 20% off for another 7 days too.

Do the 30 day trial, extend, extend again before activating the 12 month license

  • What is everyons sucess rate of Topcashback tracking? 18% cashback is making me thinking about buying it but worried it might not track and might be rejected due to coupon codes being used

Edit - Ah realised it is capped at $30 so not a material difference

  • Which platform/ OS Unraid or Truenas is better suited for running a Windows 11 VM dedicated to Blue Iris NVR & Plex Media server

I've recently ordered the Minis N5 Pro with 48GB DDR5 ECC at a discounted price $1,079 USD, but I'm now considering whether the AOOSTAR WTR MAX 11-Bay NAS might offer better value. Should I cancel the N5 Pro order?
