    • Why did this get so many down votes? Kmart $25 beats paying $250..?

      • +3

KMart one should work well and you get a chance to a have a new one after a while.. Good knows how this thing gets so expensive in the name of France

      • +3

Staub will last you the rest of your life. The Kmart one will introduce ceramic razor blades to your digestive system.

        • +5

If you look after it, it will last multiple generations. It's like quality kitchen knives - if you don't value the craftsmanship, quality and durability that goes into these products and makes them more expensive, then by all means go for the Kmart one. This kind of product arguably isn't for you.

    • +1

I have this (not red) and it is absolutely brilliant for the money.

      • +9

I got an Aldi Crofton one nearly 10 years ago for the same $ as the Kmart one and it's been amazing too.

        • +2

also have an Aldi one don't even know how long… but yeh works just fine.

      • +3

        Does it cook by itself?

        • +1

Not that good sadly, but I use it for breadmaking, so its is subjected to very high temps for extended periods, and it is still in very good shape after a couple years.

          • @BigTed: Nice! Can I use this for normal curry cooking using an electric cooker?

    • Mmmmm enamel coating

    • +12

Bought a Kmart one in 2018 just to see whether I'd like a dutch oven before committing to a >$500 French one. Been using it 2-3x/week every week since then, especially in the last year where I've been baking sourdough bread at 250deg 3x/week with it, and the enamel just hasn't broken down for me to justify buying a new one.

There's a lot of people whose opinion I respect who have said that Le Creuset will last a lifetime and you can feel the quality in it, but it's bonkers this $25 kmart one has lasted this long.

When it does break down, I'll probably still buy a Le Creuset just to feed into my aspirational class mentality.

      • +1

Kudos to you for actually looking after something that is priced to fill a throw away mindset. We have the Big W version and it has been great but starting to show signs of end of life after 3ish years. Would've bought this frenchie if i saw it before OOS

      • +3

What the brand snobs aren't realising is that this is way old tech and it's not exclusive to anyone to be able to make one of these.i have a host of cast iron stuff which I got for anywhere between free and 20 bucks and there's nothing wrong with any of it, albeit I only have a couple of enameled ones as I prefer seasoned.

      • TBH I think thats who Le Cru is marketed to - middle to upper middle class who see it as simply the finest in kitchenware and equally a status symbol. f that.

    • I got this. It's about 12 years old now. Still going strong. I cook in it every day almost.

    • +2

And this item's RRP is over 10x the realistic actual value/cost of this item.

$40 - $80 is absolute max this is worth.

Crazy how people fall for this nonsense.

  • +6

Love my Staub and been waiting for another at great price. Bought it.

I have had the cheap ones and have no hesitation in only buying Staub.

    .

    • +3

I've had cheap ones before too.

After years of use, all my Le Cruesets still look brand new. The cheap ones…don't.

      • +5

Have to agree. Had the aldi one and after 12 months the enamel looked like…..id eaten it in my meals?

Didnt even look like it was browned from cooking just absolute ass

Bought a Staub 3 years on it looks brand new. Cooks all my slow cooked meals, soups, one pot dishes.

        • Have you tried putting some vinegar into the pot? Vinegar and water at 50/50 ratio should eat away at the discoloration without touching the finish.

          • @studentl0an: I did try that and bi carb with dishwashing liquid into a paste etc

Its been yeeted into the woods never to be seen again and my Staub sleeps next to me every night

Myer has a Maxwell & Williams one for $80 + $10 delivery. And buy 2 or more cookware items, you can get 40% off (today only)
    https://www.myer.com.au/p/maxwell---williams-cast-iron-round…

The Staub is made in France. I have one and it's very good quality. But I really don't know what the cheaper one doesn't have that the Staub has. My sister-in-law bought it for $100 on a great sale many years back but once she was here, she realised that it's nothing to take internationally in a suitcase (4.1 Kilograms and quite bulky).

    • The 40% cannot be used in with any other offer. It's only for full price items.

  • +2

If I didn’t already have 2 French ovens, this would be an insta buy for me. Absolutely gorgeous

    • +7

3 isnt a crowd in France. They embrace it.

  • +3

Beautiful piece of cookware - couldnt resist. Thanks OP

  • What can I do with this that I can't with a 100x more versatile instant pot?

    • +8

      Flex on the internet

      • +1

You could do that without owning one too, to be fair

    • Sear a steak

      • -2

You can't properly sear a steak on an enamel coating

        • +5

Seems like a skill issue tbh

        • Of course you can. Every French Oven beef stew recipe starts with searing a steak.

          Sounds like operator error.

          • @CommanderCrumbcake: Yes but it won't be as good.

            • @samfisher5986: Don't take it the wrong way but you would probably benefit watching some cooking tutorials on Youtube. Start with Chef John.

              • @OzBrogains: Why would I watch a tutorial for a statement about the type of cooking material? Its not how you cook it, its the material.

Clearly your cooking tutorials haven't taught you that cast iron, steel, enamel and other materials all cook things in a different way, particularly things like meat.

While enamel can a preference, its certainly not the best material to cook a steak. Steel is better but things like cast iron at least in my opinion is even better.

                • @samfisher5986: It's up to you as to whether you lift your cooking skill level by watching Chef John videos. I mean you are after all the Drake, of whether you can cook a nice steak.

      • The InstantPot does have a sautee setting.

    • Pretty hard to bake sourdough in an instant pot

    • +2

I absolutely love cooking in my French oven, much more than in my slow cooker (though both have purposes).

The fact you can sautee ingredients first and then throw the whole thing in the oven is great. Flavour comes out so good.

      • -3

You can do all of that in a 100x more versatile instant pot

        • +5

Instant pot smells funny if you put it in the oven.

    • Cook with radiant heat.

Huge difference between cooking in a pressure cooker vs a French Oven in an oven.

    • +1

I have an InstantPot, and love it, but it doesn’t do a good slow cooked casserole. I cooked my lamb shanks casserole own my InstantPot for a while but went back to my Staub because you don’t get the same sticky consistency you get with a slow roasted casserole in the oven.

  • thanks OP, ordered one
    Always wanted to get one

  • +7

Perfect to cook my Indomie Mi Goreng in.

    • it'll be the best Indomie you've had in your life

  • -1

    A rooster coc, you say?

  • Good deal. I bought https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/888079 last time, which is wider but less tall. Very happy with it.

  • We have standardised on LC in a different colourway at home, otheriwise I would have been all over this. Staub stuff is excellent, it is only its limited availability here compared to LC that prevented us becoming a Staub household. I found a Staub shop in Geneva - the range they get there makes the limited Staub offerings we get here a crying shame.

  • +1

The real deal. Unfortunately, we have enough of these things.

These knives a good deal too: https://zwilling.com.au/zwilling-pro-knives-set-2-38430-006-….

  • How's the warranty on those?
Was on the fence during the last Le Cruset deal, can't resist anymore with this.
I'm not sure why I bought it, I don't even cook anything other than Mi Goreng.

    • Turn it into a delicious slow cooked ramen.

    • Really good for slow cooks like lamb shank stews.

  • +5

You know if they made the RRP as $1,999 the discount would look even more

    • +1

House.com.au is way ahead of you bro. Everything is ridiculously "discounted."

      • +1

95% off, closing down sale 😂

        • +2

The owner of that business must have nerves of steel. It closes down every day at 5pm and miraculously recovers by 9am the next morning.

    • +5

That's the Harris Scarf school of pricing. Import weird shit from other countries that has no RRP in Australia because no one else bothered importing it yet, and give it a RRP of $999 so $199 mark down price looks like a bargain.

  • +1

    Cracking deal. Ordered one.

  • +2

I bought a 26cm dutch oven for $60 off Amazon and it is perfectly fine. Not sure why I would pay over four times the price just for a fancy coq on the lid let alone $700 or whatever Le Creuset charge.

I'm all for buy once, cry once, but for 99% of people a cheap version is perfectly fine. If you just want to flex on the internet or use it three times a day then something ridiuclously priced may last a bit longer but at the end of the day these things aren't that complicated so there's no need to pay a fortune.

  • +1

I have something of a similar size that's fully clad stainless. I don't know what the benefit of enamelled cast iron is in comparison.

  • -2

    500 off a Frenchie
    bought 10 thanks OP

  • +1

I think I need it. Its an expensive piece of cookware.

Nah, Im good with stainless steel !

  • +3

$850 baking dish, people sell these things for like $5 at garage sales.

  • OOS

  • what dishes have people made with this?

    • Mi goreng

    • +2

Beef short ribs in red wine sauce
      Jambalaya
      Coq au vin
      Beef Bourginon
      Bread

Plenty of other stuff you can do

    • Dude it's a decoration

  • Even Le creuset is like $250-300, I wasn't aware there was pricier

    • Do you have a link to where I can get a 24cm+ Le creuset for this price?

      • We bought ours years ago in that price range. Since then I've obviously stopped looking

    • +1

Sales price for the 'normal' variants is pretty similar. ONLY the 20cm Le Creuset will go down to the price you mentioned. Do not mention the past days, we don't get 24cm ones under $300 in 2025.
You can get a black 24cm Staub from amazon for $280 right now, actually not a bad deal.
But this is a 'special version', every manufacturer will upcharge for special designs.
