Somebody Tried to Take out Two ANZ Personal Loans in My Name

Today I checked my physical mail and there were two letters from ANZ saying my personal loans applications had been unsuccessful.

Letter was in my name and my address. I haven’t banked with ANZ for 35+ years and certainly haven’t applied for two personal loans.

I rang ANZ and their fraud department are looking into it. ANZ wouldn’t give me any details - e.g. the email address and mobile number. The ANZ employee said they looked fake.

How or why would someone try to obtain a personal loan in my name?

Especially without supporting documentation.

Edit- installed WeMoney app.

The ANZ loan application was for $66,000.
There was also a NAB loan application for $50,000

Just Spoke to NAB , they said the fraud derives from leaked drivers licence details - data breach. They had flagged the loan request already. They said that usually it is crime syndicates. Sometimes they provide fake documentation- e.g. payslips . Sometimes they provide nothing and hope it just gets approved.

NAB are providing me with correspondence regarding the fraudulent loan application for …reasons.

They also provide further resources/options e.g. i could report this to the police, or providing link to idcare.org

I found NAB to be far more proactive/interactive than ANZ.

ANZ were like “we can’t tell you anything. Goodbye “

It is identity theft 101, they get the loan then transfer the money to a money mule or another fraudulent account from which they can send it overseas or buy crypto to get the total value of that loan into their name. The victim usually suffers with a destroyed credit file that takes significant time to get repair as you need to prove you did not take out the loans.

If you don't have Equifax account create one asap and you can see all the credit check made. Do this OP.

Anyone know what the OP can do to "lock" the use of his/her id details and prevent further fraud attempts?

If ANZ won't provide info as to what id information was used how can the OP prevent this from happening in future?

Interesting that they wouldn't give you your own phone number and email.

thats what the scammer would ask, no?

Looks like your income and credit rating isn't good enough for the scammers.

Sorry that was me. I fat fingered my application

  • Why did they deny the loans, did the letters say? Did they really think it was you or do they send these letters when they suspect fraud.

    1. Get onto Experian, Equifax, and Illion and place a credit check ban on yourself to prevent people from sucessfully taking out loans in your name

    2. File a police report on what happened

    3. Take a look at and contact IDCare to see how they can help out

    4. More than likely to be safe you will need to get a new passport, drivers licence, and medicare…etc (with new card numbers)

    • Thanks. Here’s the thing. All of this would be unnecessary if we still needed to produce original copies. Noone would have our passport or driver licence or Medicare card. Why on earth would banks allow people to apply for loans online/electronically? We should all be insisting on this.
