If they're matching Coles. Maybe check out Coles if these have batch dates on them. Might be able to score a fresher batch

    • I got a bag from coles yesterday. No batch date.
But I believe the trick calculate 2 years from the expiry date.
      I could be wrong haha

      • That's what I thought as well but I doubt it.

      • Damn I've also heard one year. Now I'm doubting it too haha

        • +1

          It's two years with these.

    • Would go for Coles imo. Amazon usually stock older dated batch

  • +1

Rather get them at Coles with gift cards and it makes up half a week 1 $50 spend

  • +2

These were some of the worst tasting coffee beans I’ve tried in the last several years. I returned them they were so bad.

    • +4

      I quite enjoyed them

    • +1

+1 for these being good! Highly recommend at this price.

    • -1

I agree. I recall that Aldi's entry range was better.

    • Bad how? What setup are you using?

    • I really enjoyed the Rich expresso flavour

    • You know you aren't meant to eat these straight out of the pack, right?

    • Their new batches of everything are much better if it’s coming outta their roasting place in fairfield as they’ve just gotta tonne of new machinery

  • they are often this price at coles

  • +2

How does it compare to lime blue, Airjo and Inglewood? Would it be better to pay a little more and have it freshly roasted?

    • +6

I think for an extra $5 or so, lime blue is a no brainer really.

    • +2

Definitely worth paying a bit more
I don’t pay much more for my Inglewood subscription

    • It’s owned by Coca-Cola Europe.

    • +1

As a coffee nerd, they aren't really comparable.
One is basically akin to coles brand cheese and the other is closer to what you would get at a cheesemonger.
I'm not saying that this is bad coffee.. just that it doesn't serve the same purpose and to some people lime blue coffee would taste horrible in comparison.
In saying this, Lime blue is cheap but AMAZING coffee. Their coffee is as good and well roasted as some of the most expensive beans I've ever had. So you really should try it if you can swing the extra money.
You should always get the freshest coffee you can, for espresso you want the beans no older than a month to a month and a half. Even at that you are going to be loosing quality. However again it depends on the beans going in, if you have beans grown to be lightly roasted then they won't last as long. Dark roasts tend to last longer but don't have the same fruitier flavors(which some people hate).
However if you don't care about coffee, if McDonalds coffee is fine for you. Then this is still better than instant and pre-ground.
In saying all this, support your local roasters as well.

      • Lime Blue is shit

        • +7

That's subjective, I hate McDonalds coffee. My wife likes it but I wouldn't tell her it's horrible.. I just don't drink it.
Lime Blue isn't Ona.. but it's a damn sight better than 80% of the beans that get posted on here.

          • +1

            @steelchain: What about vs Aldi?

            • @cheaptech20: Lime Blue? I have never had aldi coffee, as a rule I don't buy from supermarkets. They don't need my business and they also don't put roast dates on their coffees so I can't tell how old it is. That's not saying it's bad, it may be fine for some people. I mainly drink filter coffee, using lighter roasts. Which doesn't work as well with old coffee, even when I drank espresso at home I still liked it lighter than most supermarket beans.
In saying that I would take a guess and say it would be a fair amount better. It's freshly roasted, in small batches and by people roasting it with a quality mind set.
Lime blue is cheap enough to just grab a bag and try it!
I highly suggest you give it a go! However if you have a local roaster give them a try as well, people forget about them but they can be amazing!

              • +1

@steelchain: They do actually have roast dates on Aldi coffee, generally the ones I get are 2-4 weeks old which is not bad right?
All the specialty ones I've tried have been worse than Aldi so far

                • @cheaptech20: Oh ok well that's awesome then. I'm glad you like them. Specialty coffee isn't for everyone and as much as some people may make it seem that way it's not instantly better than anything else. I've had some trash coffee from roasters before.
2 to 4 weeks is right in the perfect zone for espresso, it really depends on the roast level.
Are the Aldi coffees darker roasts? Have deeper flavours, more chocolate less citrus? If so I think that's why you made not like most speciality coffees. Most I've found in Australia don't really roast to dark but there are some.. mostly the Italian style ones. However you won't get that out of a roaster like ona or marker lane.

                  • +1

@steelchain: Nah they have lighter roasts too, they keep winning awards going head to head with specialty ones too

          • +2

@steelchain: The way this site raves about Lime Blue, it honestly is like they’re shills.

And I’ve tried multiple beans, and they’re all rubbish. And it’s not the machine as I’ve gotten other people to trial them and they too agree they’re crap

            • +2

@87percent: I mean how was it rubbish though. They are my go to if I want to grab something cheap. They are great for the price when they are on sale. Not the greatest but definitely not remotely close to 'rubbish'

            • +3

@87percent: What would you recommend for around $30/kg then? I find Lime Blue beans have been the best among the various shops posted on ozbargain. I like roastville beans but they're like double the price.

              • @Kingduytan: The best coffee I've had was when I bought raw green beans and roasted them myself - just in a cast iron camp oven outdoors as it gets quite smokey. It's just time consuming having to stir constantly and a bit getting used to the right amount of heat without scorching. You can then experiment with your own blends. About $20-30 a kilo.

I've since given up, and now buy either the Coles or Aldi medium roast beans as it's 'good enough' for the price for my daily coffee. If I really want a bit more punch I'll actually do a quick roast to darken them a bit, hence I buy the medium roasted beans.

Lime blue is not too bad and I'll grab em once in a while when they're on sale. Used to enjoy Pablo & Rusty but they don't have sales anymore.

That's my 2 cents after over a decade of trying out various brands of beans.

https://beanbay.coffeesnobs.com.au - if you want to buy green beans to experiment.

                • +1

@cornflakes: haha I'm not that hardcore yet! Aldi’s medium roast has been my daily go-to, honestly. The only downside is that it's sometimes hard to find a batch that's just 2–3 weeks old. Every now and then, when there's a deal that gets a lot of praise on here, I'll give it a try. The most popular ones on OzBargain used to be Airjo, Inglewood, and Lime Blue. Some others are a bit hit or miss, but Lime Blue has been consistently good for my taste.

                  • +1

@Kingduytan: Try giving the Aldi medium roast beans a 10 min roast in a pan on medium heat, stirring constantly so the beans darken evenly. Then let them sit in an uncovered plate overnight. I find it brings out a bit more punch, especially if the beans are 2-3 weeks old like you say.

            • +3

@87percent: You sound pretentious as hell are you sure you're an ozbargainer?
You're not going to find the most amazing coffee beans on here relax, it beats paying $6-$11 per a coffee that's for sure.

            • @87percent: Tell us what beans you do find good - I have a feeling your hot take on LimeBlue will make a lot more sense after we hear this.

            • +5

@87percent: I suspect the problem is you. Once you've dialed in a shot, Line Blue coffee is great. Served it to many guests and everyone has complimented the coffee.

Any bean is going to taste shit if you don't know how to dial in a shot though. Maybe you do, I don't know, but a blanket statement like "line blue is shit" makes me think you have no idea what you're doing.

            • +1

@87percent: Yeah, that's because this site is about bargains and for the price lime blue is just that.
Would I buy it as my daily coffee, yeah I have when I couldn't afford the cost of a more expensive roaster.
Now that I have the option I get all my coffee from places like market lane and dawn patrol, I do!
It's better coffee but honestly it's not that far off.
When I introduce people to specialty coffee I always start at lime blue because it's cheap and good enough to get a taste for something better than you can get at coles.
I let them expand from there, there is a roaster for everyone's tastes these days.
Personally I love lighter roasts, which lime blue don't really a lot of since most people don't love them.
Saying something is just shit is a great way to turn people away from something they may enjoy for no real reason.
Maybe try saying it's not to my tastes or just I didn't like it.

          • @steelchain: I really like the taste too but I've noticed they're a bit more oily than what I've previously used, which, in QLD climate, seems to result in grounds sticking to the interior of the machine. Have to deep clean the grinder basically every time I use it. Wish I didn't stock up so much on that launch deal

            • @refraining: QLD has some amazing roasters, if you haven't tried Tattooed Sailor in cairns give them a go. I was up there a few years ago and loved them!

      • Grinders in Fairfield would be my local roaster!

  • +2

just finishing a kg of this bean.. not the best i've ever had, but more than suitable.

  • +1

Coffee is so hard. Even with the same beans, same grind same dose, extraction is not always the same. Is it my tamping, or is it Sunbeam em0440 not good enough to produce consistent grind? Or is there a problem with my coffee machine …

    • +4

Espresso is hard.. have you ever tried filter coffee? A v60 and a nice hand grinder then with a week or so of leaning done! It's much easier to get a nice cup of coffee and so much cheaper to get a amazing coffee. To really do espresso well you need a real espresso grinder and a real machine, which I doubt you could do new for under 2k.. used you could.

    • +3

      Yeah most likely the grinder.

With below average grinders I think don't worry about 30 secs 2':1 ratio and aim for 20-25. The coarser and faster the grind you get the better as long as the coffee at the end is nice.

Yes it's weird and it goes against what you see but a bad grinder is a huge limitation. The easiest fix is just go coarser and have a "fast" shot. The grinder will be less volatile in its performance so it's easily to dial in a constant espresso of 6/7 out of 10 vs a large window of 4-8 of 10.

If you like straight up espresso you might even find a slightly faster shot tastes better. You can even stretch it out to a 30s 3:1 ratio and see if you like that.

      • I use 14g dose, 18g 3 times a day is a bit too much caffeine for me :)
It was just so hard to control the extraction time even with same grind setting it goes anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds.

        • I am getting a used Mazzer so that should help a lot hopefully.
        • I've just got a precision basket from Ali so that would help a bit as well. Not sure how good it is as I settled for MHW-3Bomber thing but it does have a lot more holes compared to OEM Welhome.
        • I've replaced Calcium filter cartridge which seemed to be clogged up a bit, water flow seems better.
    • Thanks for the tips

  • Tried to order on their app…. Boy, what an eye-watering experience……

  • How are coffee beans on Amazon in general? I'm worried they're stale because they might've been sitting in an Amazon warehouse for a long time.

    • My last order was fresh enough to not adjust grind settings (usually order fresh roast from manna)…

But i guess theres no guarantee

  • +1

How do these compare with Aldi regular/single origin medium roast?

  • These are decent beans for milk based coffee. Lime Blue is way better, especially for espresso. I wouldn't pay more than $30/kg for these beans though. At full RRP there are way better options.

  • As someone who was a huge fan of their Crema cheaper range these are not good, I've tried most of the beans recommended on special on this site (lime, airjo, blk, aldi etc) and these were probably the worst (we prefer medium roast in our place, and it is subjective as everyone keeps reiterating).
Currently we alternate between ONA or jamaica blue and are enjoying them atm
I bought these full price and would still not recommend at this price.

worth noting that they were also purchased close to roast date and as a supermarket brand owned by Coca Cola not comparable to a specialty roaster, still garbage for supermarket quality

    May 2025 roast

  • Shipping date is woeful for these for prime free
