Does it get any better than a 780m on these units?

    • +1

There are 890m units but considerably more expensive.

  • why do you need such a beast for a server? A $150 nucbox should be able to do that?

    • +1

Yes, depends on the type of the server you're running. This is best for a Proxmox/ESXI server and running multiple VMs and containers simultaneously.

    • Yes, why would we need high performance computing clusters and data-centres? Just replace all of those servers with a $150 nucbox!

Common sense says that just like a knife can be used to slice wafer thin sashima, perform surgery or to cut a turd in half - devices have different uses that are appropriate to the end user.

        • +2

I think you meant to say sashimi…? 😅

          • @anonym: I blame my fingers. They're not fluent in Japanese.

16GB ram at this price point is honestly pretty bad.

You can get double the ram and double the USB C ports plus an Oculink port for less than $50 extra.

    • It's not only about the numbers. Beware of those less known brands. See this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/MiniPCs/comments/1hllkcg/comment/ma…

They have the same parts and brand names, all those companies do is put them together, similar to what many people do when buying parts and build them themselves.

        • Yes, parts like CPU, RAM, SSD are all made by other companies… but not the motherboard, cooling system, power supply and the case. They have to design their own boards and provide a firmware BIOS for it which is a main part in the PC as it connects everything together and also they should provide warranty and customer service. Many times I have dealt with a PC from a cheap brand with a rubbish bios that renders the system unusable in certain scenarios and the company doesn't even bother replying to my email, let alone they try to fix it! Some of these companies don't even use a decent thermal paste on the CPU and the first thing you need to do is to go through the hassle and replace it before start using the unit. With those, usually warranty is just a joke and they always claim that you have damaged the device and they don't cover it!
Having said all that, it all comes down to your budget and what you are looking for, then you shortlist the options and go with the one that ticks most of the boxes. But better to do the research and read the reviews before buying.

BOSGAME is fine, and that is probably an odd case.

REATAN & others sell the same unit under different brands

  • How does this compare to the https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0F43LFLY1?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_f…

I don't need the faster graphics of 780m. so for LLM use the 680M with 16GB changed in the bios should be ok?

I bought this barebone from aliexpress for c. $400 to use it as a HTPC (I'm using Pot player with madvr). An important aspect I should've research before purchasing: the thermals are poorly implemented - reddit is full of people trying to find solutions.
In my case, my ears started to ring when setting it up on my desk: it is a noise machine and I had to replace both its fans. For anyone who bought this, I am replacing the top fan with this option https://www.printables.com/model/1395055-gmktec-k6-cooling-r…
I tried replacing the top fan with Noctua Nf-a4x10 5v and the NVME drive with a 5mm cooler idles at 55-60 degrees Celsius after 30 min.
For the CPU fan, I had aKSB06105HB-A from another small factor PC and now is barely audible. It is a bit thicker but I was able to fit it in.
Bottom line recommendation: make sure before buying this brand or other you look on reddit and see what people say about it.
