potentially an all time low?
Perfect to get the last of the life from your AM4 motherboard.
5800x3d or even 5700x3d might be better for gaming. But this is still a great price for lots of cores and performance.

I put a 5700x3d into my old b350, working great (after bios update of course)
May be check the amd motherboard tier list to see if your board can handle thjs cpu. No point if its going to fry
Good point, though it's easily sorted by putting the CPU into eco mode. The 5950X got great silicone so even at 65W it's not nerfed.
How does it compare in gaming workload with 5800X3D? Are 5800X3Ds even available in any reputable sellers?
No longer manufactured. For a long time. So old stock missing stock if they ever pop-up.
I assume this 5950X is old stock as well then? Aside from a few newer mid-tier ones, AM4 CPUs are phased out, right?
Yep.
Well. They released like.. The 5500x3d recently but.. Eh.
No, at the price the 5800X3D is going for these days, it's not worth it.
You'll get better performance, more future longevity, and it will cost less to go with something like a 7700, which I see regularly for a little over $200 here, and pair that with an AM5 board and DDR5.
Whilst AM4 was a great platform, it's probably time to get out now whilst you can still get some decent money for your AM4 boards, and DDR4.
Yeah, you're right, time to move on.
I built my current PC back in the days with upgradability in mind, the platform is gone before I could upgrade it.
But replacing everything is expensive and hard to justify especially with how much GPUs are going for these days.
Would you recommend upgrading only the GPU for now, and wait for AMD to announce AM6 (or Intel's next socket, if they are still in any way relevant by then), since it's been a couple of years AM5 came out?
Money down the drain gaming with more than 8 cores
Whilst this is true (at least according the latest Hardware Unboxed video), who said anything about this CPU being used purely for gaming?
Certain games (like Skylines 2) perform pretty well on this CPU.
More cores is always good. It's nice to not have to quit your game to your your compute back for regular computer use.
I've got a 3600 atm and a 6800xt. What sort of difference would I see? I also like to do photo editing
You've not given enough info.
Resolution you're at for gaming etc? What software for editing? It's variable. Also your board. I imagine very early first gen ryzen might struggle with some later high core CPUs potentially.
But I went from a 2600 to a 5600x and had massive gains at 1440p with a 3060 Ti. The 3000 series is a lot better than ryzen plus though..
Short version. Good bump. Long version. It depends lol.
Early boards shouldn't be an issue if BIOS supports it, TDP is essentially the same if not lower
At stock, yeah, but if people decide to pump extra voltage etc.. I just vaguely recall some cheap early 300 series vrms being actually bad lol
@ReaperX22: The 3800x is 105w anyway, same as this. Any low end MB will struggle overclocking it, it's asking for trouble in any circumstances doing that.
Stock definitely no issues, but I'd say even overclocking some headroom still tbh - it's less power hungry than the older CPUs. (Both rated 105w, but it's more efficient… Until you run Prime95 or something, then it might have issues)
That's the same with a new MB too - you're not gonna get a 140w+ OC on a 105w CPU on an lowend MB designed for 65-95w, and maybe 105w. If it's a high end MB it won't matter much and may bring some life back to it, but a low end MB you might as well spend the $140 to replace the MB too and get a newer CPU.
I run a 5700x3d with a 6800xt, no real difference from the 3700x before it. But that's because I'm gaming on a 4K TV.
If whatever you want to do utilises CPU cores then sure, but it's unlikely 16 cores are going to help much for photo editing.
It's not bad if you're really committed to AM4, but I don't see it as great value unless you just need cores.
For gaming or general usage, a Ryzen 7 7700 would be a better option, and I see them around here for ~$220 or so regularly - you could purchase an AM5 board, DDR5, sell your old AM4 stuff, and be better off.
Unless you only do even AMD numbers…
Even for cores, at this price a miniforums board with the CPU included isn't much more tbh…
5950x still going great , I purchased it at launch. Will be a 10 year cpu for me 😁
Ive got one of these and it was real hard to find another ITX motherboard for it about 8 months ago.
I wouldn't buy another Am4 CPU.
This is more than the 7800X3D though and the 7800X3D is way better
Did you get a 7800X3D working on AM4?
Maybe it's time to move on then
How is it more than the 7800X3D? The cheapest 7800X3D is $457 from AliExpress.
Look at the 7800X3D deals bro.
What deal? You're making shit up all the times. Why?
@HandsomeMonkey: 95% of the time marshall0w2 lives in his own universe of amazing deals that no one else seems to able to access, but on this occasion, it seems the 7800X3D has been as low as ~A$404.40 (25/08/25).

So whilst it's not achievable right now, it has been pretty close recently.
Hmmmm do I cop for am4 server build
If you need the cores, you work in something that earns enough money to be doing it in the first place, and therefore can afford Zen 5, and not throw money away on Zen 3…
There's plenty of people who need the cores for hobby projects that don't earn money or are still studying.
It would be nice to have some more cores but I think I'll try ride out my 5700x until AM5 becomes a little cheaper to upgrade to.
Damn. Just upgraded to 128GB RAM for my 3700X… Thinking about upgrading the CPU next, but I don’t know if I should skip Zen 3 and go straight to Zen 5. If I go for Zen 5, I’ll have to replace the motherboard and RAM.
Example could be when I upgraded/side graded from 5900x to 7700 out performed in games and a few productivity programs. Also scored the same in cinebench haha
Upgraded to this a few weeks ago, a nice cheap performance boost especially in multithreaded compilation from the 3700x!
what are you using it for? i’m on 3700x too
Mostly work, but a bit of gaming. Compile times with C++ and Rust see the biggest gains for me. I use a 9950x at work, it's quite a bit faster, so the extra cores from the 3700x helped a lot for a low cost compared to upgrading away from AM4.
bought one. cheers OP!
I'm sort of tempted to throw this type of CPU into my ancient budget, ASRock cheap as crap B350M motherboard which started life with the lowliest Ryzen 3 1200 lol!
Try that with an Intel.
