  • Nice bundles. A low profile HD6450 would be good to include..

    • no stock of them yet, will consider for future, which particular brand will you recommend?

      • +2

not really fussed. HIS seems to be good. You get them on ebay, but shipping gets expensive. Bundling would save on shipping hence give the cheaper deal. And the 6450 seems to be one of the most popular recommended cards on the OCAU and WP forums for the microserver. Also recommend bundling the 4tb deskstar drives and some low capacity SSDs. Maybe a low profile USB3.0 PCIe expansion card. Make it a one-stop-shop!

        • I'd definately be up for a low capacity SSD! Not sure how long my several year old 250gb will last…

      • After buying the N54L from you a couple of weeks ago I can say the ASUS HD 6450 is running well. Not sure if a fanned card would be better for some people though… (Mine stays cool enough)

        • +2

Probably no need for a fan, the reference design is passively cooled and in these boxes the quieter the better. No one will be (or should be) OC'ing these so minimal benefit in having a fan.

        • Running low on low capacity SSDs for the moment to do deals :(. Will try to figure something out by this week.

  • +1

Ahh man, just spent $219 only two weeks ago on the N40L from these guys.

I Should have just waited and got the cheap WD red disks bundled in.

    Lesson learnt.

    • That deal was free shipping so it's the same price anyhow.
Though with the disk bundles it is cheaper I guess.

  • Hi ShoppingExpress, is there any deal on low profile sound card?

    • No, sorry. Sound card will not be our focus in the near future.

    • I'm not sure about the video card they are offering but ATI chipset video cards allow sound out through HDMI…

      • That's correct, at the moment I use asus 6450 ($43 from MSY) and having my sound through HDMI. Nice little card, i could play l4D2 and other games with 6450.

        • Oh I didn't think of that..

Probably a better fit than L4D2 on my i5…

EDIT: Oh and that's exactly where I got that card :)

      • Like most recent cards the GT210 can output 7.1ch audio (be it LPCM or bitstreamed Dolby/DTS-HD etc.) over HDMI just fine.

  • I need a HTPC. can i use the HP N54L Mircoserver + ASUS HD 6450? do i need anything else?

    • Depends on what you need…

That's what I have. I also have 4gb of NON-ECC ram a few HDs and it runs a treat!

Last things on my list are a SSD for O/S and a TV tuner so my TV can have just 1 input to rule them all!

      • Is there any incompatibility issues with using the 4gb non-ecc ram with the 2gb ecc ram (in both available slots)?

        • +1

There can be issues mixing them, best not to.

        • Thanks.

    • +1

You'll need an Amp if you want surround sound.

    • +5

I wouldn't waste your money on the N54L. Get the N40L It's cheaper and uses less power yet has enough grunt for anything HTPC related. Heck even the N36L was enough.

The $70 you save could be better spent on extra RAM or an SSD boot drive.

    • A media centre compatible remote and cheap OS would be ideal. Last days to grab Win8 at $40 too.

    • thanks guys.. decided on the N40L…. but N40L was going for $189 before.. i may wait for a similar deal..

      • +1

You could be waiting a while and wouldnt be surprised if N40l is EOL now and will probably dry up. $209 is a pretty good deal. Great server to. Love mine.

Just wish i could find a reliable DTV card to work with Sage TV.

Nothing says "I love you" quite like a HP Microserver for Valentine's. Very tempted by the n54l but it's not THAT much of a step up to justify Ebaying my current n40l.

    • try broadcast this to your partner: Nothing says "I love you" quite like a HP Microserver for Valentine's.

  • May I ask, what operating system most people use. Especially if its main use is as a HTPC with a low profile video card and HDMI into the tv. Surround sound not required.

I've been using Linux/Debian/Ubuntu for 20 years but sometimes Windows and its drivers just makes life easy.

    • Follow this link http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=958208
and then click on the "User/Hardware details list! (spreadsheet)" which is sorted by the OS.

I think for the HTPC use the popular options are Windows and Ubuntu.

    • I'm still a huge fan of Windows Media Center on either Win 7 or 8. I use MediaBrowser has an excellent interface with multiple theme options and plugins. It does coverart and indexing very well, particularly for TV shows.

Runs well on a Athlon II x2 640, 2GB of RAM and a HD4200 IGP. Some extra RAM, a dedicated card like the HD6450 and possibly a boot SSD and you've got yourself a sweet HPTC set-up. Just don't forget a decent remote if you're trying to attain WAF.

    • The 6450 card suffers from image tearing on my Ubuntu 12 install which apparently isn't a problem under Windows and it's much-better drivers.

I did go through a convoluted process to fix the display issues via installing new drivers when I was running Ubuntu 11 but then a simple 'apt-get upgrade' completely screwed the system up due to them (from what I could see in the logs). When I then rebuilt as Ubuntu 12 I decided to keep the standard drivers and live with the dodgy display just because I can't bear another rebuild should an update go wrong!!

The internet is full of 6450 image problems on Ubuntu. Shame because I love my setup (XBMC, NAS, download server, and more all rolled into one little unit).

You may have better luck - maybe the latest AMD drivers work well on Ubuntu 12 and won't mess up on an update but I can't be bothered risking it. Not when my wife has Downton Abbey to watch!

    • Thanks everyone for the input.

Think I'll pull the trigger and join the N40L crowd. :)

Got my N40L from the last deal.
    Excellent service !
Ordered in the morning, got it delivered to my door the next morning :)

Would love to see WHS 2011 in these deals

Oh no shoppingexpress you evil site. I already got 2. please dont do this.
This is like waving a red flag in front of a bull.

you are still 8 units short

Does shopping express use Aus post or a courier to deliver? The N40L is very temping. Every time its on special I get closer to buying it.

    • Aus Post eParcel, trackable and relatively quick to eastern destinations, westerners seem to have wait for a bit.

      • Pretty standard unless you use some sort of express shipment (ie air based shipping and not ground) for post it goes from Chullora to Potts Hill to be loaded onto a contractor which goes to Adelaide which backfills Vic, SA and NT to WA product then onwards to Perth.

Its almost 4 days driving time if done by the book.

  • Whirlpool suggests that the Asus GT 210 requires modding to fit the N40L. Does this same problem apply to the Gigabyte?

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1998565

Might not be a good graphics card for the N40L.

    • yes there is a post further down where he says he had issues with the passively cooled (which this one is), whereas the fan cooled fit fine.

      • From a cooling point of view, I have the HIS6450 an even though it is a passive card there is a little plug on the card for fan power. If it does become an issue down the track it will add a fan from an old card.

Many folks are running the passive cards and the ATI 6450 is a fan favorite. Person the pun.

  • Hi Rep, the quoted shipping charges (to metro ADL) went up when I added a 1x 2TB green drive to the N40L. The opening post says there is no extra shipping. Did I read that right?

    • Hi amts,

You should not be charged, can you please try again?

      Kind Regards

        Working now. Thanks!

  • Is the listed video card a must? Or is that if you want to turn the N54L into a media server? Can I please get some clarification? I'm considering purchasing an N54L for back up of my photos. I'd also like to be able to stream media from it. Is that possible?

    • If you wish to stream from it(like a NAS)you don't need the viseocard. However it depends on what you will be using on the TV end to process the media. If for example you are using an AppleTV to do the work of playing the media no card required. If you wish to connect the N54L directly to the TV you will need a card.

The 54 as a backup machine is a great idea, you just need a couple reliable hard drives.

  • hey all,

I'm thinking about buying one. Just double checking… this thing can fit 4 drives of the WD Red's? What's the common configuration? Raid0 or Raid1? Obvious pro's and con's to both, just wondering how people use this thing. I was thinking about a Synology NAS going Raid5 instead.. but this is significantly cheaper.

I mainly need it for NAS / media server as i'm running out of room on my PC.

    • In normal config you have 4 bays to play with. If you put your OS on a pendrive (plugs into the motherboard) then you can have these 4 'real' bays plus the one where you would have put your optical drive or other boot drive. I've had mine for ages and run 4x2TB in RAID 5 (some people balk at this but it's been fine for me - I had one drive fail and just popped in a replacement and it rebuilt without any issues). As I've just said elsewhere for about a grand you could get this unit plus 4x3TB and have a great RAID1/RAID5/RAIDZ setup.

      • That's software raid though? What OS do you run?

    • +1

You can actually put 6 drives internally. The 5th SATA is on the motherboard and is marked ODD.
The 6th SATA is the eSATA port on the outside.

So to get 6th eSATA for internal you need a eSATA to SATA cable (about $2-3 on Ebay).

Then you route that cable from outside to inside. The easiest way is the latch that flips down over the 2 PCI-e cards has a big enough hole to route the cable through and then put the latch back up (90% up anyway).

To get full AHCI speed from SATA 5,6 you should apply the modified BIOS for the N40L (Google it or search threads on OCAU).

      My setup:
      5 x 3TB WD Reds, 1 120 GB SSD. SATA 1-4,6 WD REDs, SATA 5 (SSD).

You can put the SSD in the space between the ODD bay at the top and the 4 bay drive cage below. Just move the power connectors over a bit.

Since the available ODD power is MOLEX you should get a MOLEX to 2x SATA power adapter cable (also 2-3 on Ebay). This changes the single MOLEX connector over to 2 SATA Power cables (most HDDs/SSDs now run on SATA power).

Also you'll need one more SATA-SATA cable if you're intend to connect to the ODD port on the mother board.

So the cable count if you fit it all out:
      1 SATA-SATA
      1 eSATA-SATA
      1 MOLEX-2xSATA

You should also get a 5.25 to 3.5 drive bay set of brackets so you can fit the 3.5" HDD into the ODD bay at the top. As for the SSD I secure it by velcro (2 dollar shop).

My raw space is: 13.65 TB
My space after using FlexRAID and designating one of the drives to parity duty: 10.9 TB
      OS: Windows 8 Pro
Media software: XBMC and Windows Media Center

Other add-ons as it's a HTPC and NAS.
      1. dual USB TV Tuner (KWorld 499T)
      2. HIS Radeon HD6450 Video Card outputting via HDMI to my receiver.

It's been working for months without a shutdown and is quiet and runs cool.

Dust in the vents is becoming an issue so I'm going to give a good clean soon. Those dust bunnies are what will kill your machine if you don't clean them out.

  • (excuse my ignorance) Im a little unclear on whats on offer. I gather its a barebones system without any software. Its not even a NAS? Is that right? My "download PC" died this AM - prob just PS. Im after something to log into, fire up some torrents and store the content to stream to a mediaplayer. Do I need something like WHS to go with this? Is that available from ShoppingEXPRESS?

    • You're right in that it ships with no OS but you can easily download and install something like FreeNAS to turn it into a simple NAS if that's all you want. FreeNAS actually has a bittorrent plugin so it'd do your torrenting for you too. Alternatively, yeah - buy and install a 'real OS' like WHS or a freebie alternative such as Ubuntu.

I'm not sure about Windows but you can run Ubuntu or FreeNAS off a USB pen drive (there's a socket on the motherboard for this so it won't be stuck out of a port on the back…). If you do this then you have space for 5 drives… For less than a grand you could have a 5x3TB NAS up and running (although you may want to step up the RAM and buy the more expensive RED drives which would push the price up).

      • thanks zfa

      • +1

Ordered a N40 and WHS (from elsewhere - couldnt see it at ShoppingExpress)
Good timing with the "download PC" dying this AM :-)
SWMBO sole Q was - is it quiet :-)

  • Rep, What is the wait time on the Gigabyte GT 620?

    • +1

Estimate need 3 to 5 working days of wait time for that.

  • hi rep,

have the has the price of the ram gone up?
i was just about to order the 2x4gb ram and 2x seagate 1tb with the n54l
but it looks like both item price has gone up?
4gb ram now shows $26 instead of $21?
the seagate 1tb shows $72.90 instead of $67.90?

    • Hi Andy,

You need to purchase together with the microserver, and the discount only apply once (ONE item) - as mentioned on above post.

  • Any chance of bundling bigger RAM kits? Eg
    Kingston 8GB DDR3 ECC (KVR1333D3E9S/8G)
    Kingston 16Gb DDR3 ECC (KVR1333D3E9SK2/16G)

    • Will consider these options for future deals. Thanks for highlighting your interest :).

  • anyone sells or give away internal ram or 250g hdd?im looking for both of them to make mirrored hdd

  • I just spent over an hour choosing the N40, ram, hdd. Filled in all the shipping information, only yo get rejected at the payment stage. Message was that cannot process, please use different card number. The system rejected both me and my partners cards. We both got money in our cards, got the details correct. Would have been nice to get a more meaningful error message.

I guess I will go back to my regular computer place. More expensive, at least they're happy to take my money.

    Deflated customer

  • My bad, all good now.

    • It's just a separate listing of the GST component, the $279 includes the $27.90.

What's the total? My guess would be $279 + whatever the shipping cost is.

  • Anybody else's arrive damaged? Looks like the metal at the top of my PCI slots was banged in.

Ninja-edit: For what it's worth, the box it arrived in was undamaged.

Edit: Seems that it was the PCI slot's screw's cover. Was pushed into the case somehow; have since pulled it out using a flat-headed screwdriver. This has fixed it, though there's minor scratching left on the case from when it was forced in.
