    • yes was about to fix it but you beat me to it , cheers

      • I don't know I think I will way for Clair Obscur: Expedition 34 thats got to be the best one.

        • +8

A real fan would know Expidition 32 is next.

  • honest question: who is Clair Obscur?

    • +2

Clair Obscur is the name of the entire franchise or universe.

    • +9

Not a person, but an art style. The French words mean "light dark", but the style is called Chiaroscuro in English.

    • +6

It's an art term where intense dark/light contrast is used.

    • She's the singer of this banger:

    • +1

      why is Clair Obscur?

    • +1

Clair Obscur means light - dark in French. This game is a keeper

    GOTY

      • +1

aint no one give a (profanity) enough about Kingdom Come for it to get GOTY

    • -2

      Nah.

Cool aesthetic but I'm going to be honest the gameplay is meh. The designers seem to have taken it as a challenge to make it very difficult to interpret enemy attack timing. Its ok early but the problem is you just never really get better, every single enemy has to be learnt separately.

Would have been a lot more fun if telegraphing was more predictable and you could actually progress and get better at the game. Either that or get rid of the QTE system completely so they can go more in depth on the RPG system, because as it is they at odds with each other. The RPG system is almost meaningless if you can parry.

      • -2

I tend to agree. It's either ridiculously hard if you can't get the parry right, so you go online and a million fanbois tell you that you suck and "git gud", then you do that and then the game becomes ridiculously easy.

Overall though, I kinda learned to love it. You grind a boss a few times and lose horribly every time, then that one time you get lucky and land all your parries and beat the boss easily, you feel like you're awesome.

        • Unless you go for the build that can one shot every boss

      • That's the whole point of the challenge - not so predictable that you can parry each time, so it makes a successful Exp 33 party counter so satisfying
I wasnt great at parrying but found the success rate just right that the game was challenging without being souls like

        • +1

It's more so that it's purely a game of memorisation. Similar looking attacks can have completely different parry timings. Some attacks it's when the attack touches your model. Others they have to be halfway through you.

Its just not possible to judge the correct timing from experience for a new attack - you have to actually get hit by it to work it out.

          • +1

@Panzer04: Actually, if you look for visual cues alone, it's very difficult to parry.

It's easier to rely on sound cues and feel the flow of the battle to time the parry.

            • @azngamer: My experience was that none of those things reliably helped you parry. You eventually related the visual and sound cues to the timing but I don't feel they were consistent so the reality was if you met a new enemy it would take almost as long to learn how to parry it no matter how far into the game you got.

When I ran into reruns of old enemies I basically had to get the feel for them all over again because there wasn't enough consistency in visual/sound design. I was playing on the highest difficulty and eventually just got sick of not really getting any better in a "global" way vs every enemy, if that makes sense.

              • +1

@Panzer04: Maybe playing on the hardest difficulty is the problem? I was playing on Expeditioner (medium) until act 2 and switched to easy.

Never tried expert but I imagine a failed parry would result in instant KO to one of the party members.

I found that leaning back on the couch and relaxing helped even for new bosses. Never touched the dodge button after parry was introduced and I would be able to block 4-5 out of a 8 hit combo in turn 1 and get better as the battle progresses. I assume expert doesn't allow mistakes and instantly takes you out of the battle

                • @azngamer: It's not instant KO, but iirc the timings are tighter. Presumably HP and attack goes up too, so you need to more reliably parry both to survive and kill the enemy.

I also didn't use dodge much if any once parry came along, not least because dodging didn't really feel that much easier and not hitting back sucks.

Probably I just needed to eat my pride and lower the difficulty for a better time :P

      • Wut, you absolutely get better. I couldn't parry anything at the start and like 6 hours in I was parrying nearly everything. I'm not even particularly good at soulslike games

Better wait until it is announced as GOTY and couple of weeks later, it may be added as free game for PSPlus subscribers

    • +2

not possible, unless you want to wait until 2027+

      • It's included in Xbox Gamepass since launch so it's possible they could add it to the PS+ subscription too?

        • +1

          SONY very stingy.

        • If it's on Gamepass from launch, then Microsoft either owns the developer/publisher, or made an exclusive deal with them. They are now shifting away from an exclusivity approach with gaming though, so I guess ironically if the do own them then it might actually increase the likelihood of it coming to PlayStation Plus in some form sooner. If it's just an exclusivity deal that they signed ages ago before the strategy shift, they'll definitely run that out before anything could be signed with Sony.

          • +1

@TimR31: Microsoft don't own the studio, probably just 1yr exclusive with Gamepass and then it can be shopped to PS+ if they wanted. They had no idea how big this game was going to grow though, amazing sales numbers for their first game. Hopefully they don't regret taking it to Gamepass.

  • +4

sekiro and clair obscur on sale… good week for ozbargain parry maniacs

  • Really Good Game

  • THE GOAT

  • +2

    GOTY.

I sold mine $60, facebook market

  • +3

This game is 100% worth it even at full price. A complete breath of fresh air in the gaming space and likely GOTY.

  • +6

Already played, but this is an amazing deal for those who come after!

    • +1

Yeah I'm loving it (still in the middle of Act 2). Honestly, amazing voice actor and dialogue. The story definitely has got a little bit of Whooo and a little bit of Wheee

  • +1

One of the most imaginative and emotionally evocative stories I've ever experienced in any format

  • +2

Finished main story and doing post/end game content now.

Great game! Any rpg or jrpg fan should play it.

Square Enix could never. I love MY FF games, but they've just been kinda… Meh for a while now.

You can definitely see inspiration from older rpgs and definitely some influence of Nier here, but it's wrapped up very nicely in a new way of turn based rpgs that keeps you way more engaged/keeps builds more interesting.

Amazing soundtrack and story as well.

    • Sqenix stopped making good games after PSX.

      • +2

Mmm I don't know about that. FFX was, and still is my favourite. FF8 was second. I actually never got too far into 7 though I have the disc set for psx still. I got to last area in 9 and kinda just.. Stopped.

I bought the Pixel collection though I've yet to play. I played 3 on an Android tablet a while back.

X2 was fun, I genuinely didn't mind it. I've tried multiple times to get into 12, 13 and 15 but never make any headway. I platinumed 7 remake, 7 Rebirth and 16, however..

But genuinely i found the open worldness of 16 and rebirth a slog, mostly empty quests, same but different. 16s combat was sick, however. Rebirth mini games almost drove me to insanity.

If I had to pick, honestly I'd say Chained Echoes and Sea of Stars kinda trump most recent FFs, and Clair Osbcur is above those two.

        • Mmm alright FFX was decent, but X-2 is a no. The rest after are all slops. The 7 remake and rebirth were painful to experience.

Oh I guess I have to eat my words since I enjoyed the Octopath Traveler games, but I stand by my insinuated remark about Sqeenix quality paling in comparison to their former glory. Actually, I kind of enjoyed Square and Enix as two separate entities…

          • @Munki: X-2 was polarising but I get it's not for everyone.

I enjoyed the 7 remake stuff, and probably would've enjoyed them more if I didn't try to plat them. That's probably the main downside. The ridiculous plat requirements for mini games.

16 was fun just for the epic Eikon fights.

You should try Chained Echoes and Sea of Stars if you enjoyed Octopath (I've not yet tried Octopath but it's on my to do). CE first, though. It's the.. Better? Game, though sea of stars is arguably more polished? It's a little simpler, though

  • +2

    Parry it!

    • For those who come after

  • +4

Currently available on Xbox gamepass, for those with a PC or XBOX

    • +2

If you have both, you can buy it digitally and get both copies as a Xbox Play Anywhere title.

  • +2

Also available for $79 at Big W + free metro shipping https://www.bigw.com.au/product/clair-obscur-expedition-33-p…

    • +1

Yep I bought it from Big W the other day, free & quick shipping, ~40 cents worth of everyday rewards points too.

I couldn't get this to work unfortunately:
"Join the BIG W Inner Circle and get $10 off your first online order.*"

      • I think the * says minimum spend of $100

        • When I click the T&C's it says "Subscribe to BIG W’s Inner Circle and as a welcome, receive $10 off* your next online order of $75 (excluding delivery fees, online lay-by fees) or more made at bigw.com.au including BIG W Market. Be sure to enter the promotion code emailed to you, in the ‘Add Promo Code’ section of the checkout."

Problem is I never got the promo code via email. In fact I didn't get an email from Big W at all, and I tried signing up a few emails. Hopefully they fix/fixed it.

  • +2

One of the best games I've ever played hands down. Way too cheap even at $79, unbelievable some companies are charging upwards of $100 when the quality of this game surpasses that.

  • +6

They mocked us when we said the human body is the strongest of them all. We trained relentlessly and now our bodies have achieved the pinnacle of human performance, with which we are able to crush our enemies!
We are SO much more agile and aerodynamic without the heavy uniforms constraining our glorious muscles.

  • Absolutely amazing game!

  • Reminder: This is on Game Pass as well

  • Better on PS5 or PC?

    • +2

      PC is always the answer

      • Really depends with this one, UE5 can be brutal for people with older PCs.

    • +1

You'd want a controller either way imo.

So depends if you wanna couch it up or sit at your PC! (layout depending)

I run performance mode perfectly fine on ps5 pro. No real dips or glitches or issues. Samsung 65 inch s90c oled TV a few meters back. I will say some text is surprisingly small. Otherwise take your pick

      • +1

Thanks. Means ps5 for me. Once it's a controller I don't love it on PC.

  • -2

Been $79 at BigW for ages, not a deal.

  • +1

Also on special at Big W for the same price + $10 off with the newsletter coupon. Cheers for the heads up OP

  • -6

I like the design, art style but mechanics, movement, effects, moves execution etc. Is very Final Fartasy, Asian RPGs. No idea at all why they didn't do their own thing, more fitting with the whole universe then just copy/paste, bit of a let down in that sense and lazy.

    • +2

      Like action RPG open world?

Whats wrong with it being final fantasy like? They found a way to crank up turn based game and its awesome in a genre that hasn't really pushed itself

      • -4

Your point has nothing at all to do with my point. All you saw is Final Fartasy writen, that's it.

        • +2

Then which part was very copy and paste-y?

    • +1

Nothing about it is copy and paste. We haven't had a turn based rpg that used this mechanics since final fantasy X.
Only thing in recent times is Octopath traveller series.
The overworld concept hasn't been utilised since final fantasy IX.
So if anything they have brought what all ff fans have wanted for the last 20 years to life.
They even made it their own with the parry mechanic.

  • Brilliant game, Story, Music, game play all great… Everyone (into games or not) should at the very least watch the Skill up video on YT around how this game was made, just amazing and it's unlikely to ever happen again, to achieve what they did and show up AAA studios who spend 50-100x more for a game that's meh is in itself worth supporting this studio and this game …

  • Oh boy..

I've enjoyed Shin Megami Tensei V, the Persona games, Octopath…

This looks great, do I need it?

    • +1

      Yes, it's absolutely incredible.

    • +1

It has the persona 5 battle UI, skills system similar to some board games like gloomhaven (there is a flow to selecting skills if that makes sense), parry system like mario rpg but on steroids.

      Story - absolute cinema.

It does have it flaws but such a fun game to play from start to finish.

      Music - chef kiss.

So yes, you need it unless you absolutely hate parrying

      • Thanks guys

It looks and sounds amazing. I'll have to put it on the back burner for now though. I indulged in a Switch 2 and am having a good time with it.

Looking forward to Clair Obscur in the not too distant future!

  • Fantastic game, just wish we had a physical Xbox release here. One of my favourite gaming experiences this year for sure.

  • The deluxe (also Premium?) edition is $76.45 on PSN.

    • You know I saw this price and thought, 'thats weird I'm sure if was like $70 off sale on PSN..'

Sure enough this is one of those weird times where at RRP digital is cheaper than physical!

  • +1

This is an homage to JRPGs when they used to innovate and made fun games. These guys deserve every cent in profit.

    • Some of the best games of recent years have been JRPGs, why put other games down because you like this one? You being a casual doesn't mean Japanese devs no longer make fun or innovative JRPGs. Your scope is just insanely narrow.

      • With that said, what would be your top JRPG recommendations for those who are looking to catch up on the genre for the last decade or so?

        • +3

Im hoing to be quite broad, because COE33 is only tangentaly JRPG like,

Like a Dragon (Yakuza) series, particularly 7 and 8 as they are true JRPGs; Basically Anything from modern Vanilla Ware or Atlus, Xenoblade Chronicles series, Hundred Line, Tales of Berseria and Tales of Arise, Octopath Traveller, the modern Trails games are also good.

That's just a few, but there are plenty more. It's just a wild statement that fun JRPGs aren't made anymore.

    • I'd say Persona 5 and Metaphor Refantazio, amongst others, speak pretty clearly against the claim that (J)RPGs have hit any kind of wall in terms of recent innovation. What COE33 brought to the table was a completely different cultural perspective, which is clearly welcome, and doesn't indicate any specific failings of JRPG as a sub-genre (which by definition, is the output of one specific country/culture).

Like this is exactly why the so-called "left" keeps banging on about how diversity is a good thing.

But you're still absolutely 100% right that Sandfall Interactive deserves everything coming at them for having created a banger.

      • Although a few years old now Dragon Quest XI was received very positively and the Yakuza spinoff Like a Dragon with turn-based combat also had great reception. Both games sold well.

There was also the Apple funded Fantasian and the later PC/console port of it Neodimension Fantasia that was a great homaeg to the old final fantasy but has some cool innovations in the battle system and has a very unique artstyle using photographs of dioramas for the backgrounds.

        • Yakuza: Like a Dragon is not a spin off, it's the direct sequel to Yakuza 6 and is called Like a Dragon 7 in Japan.

Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth is the sequel to that and is titled Like a Dragon 8 in Japan, it is also turn based but far more refined as its their second attempt.

They renamed it Like a Dragon starting with 7 to bring it closer to the the Japanese titles.
