Great price for 4tb M.2 and, on paper, looks good. Not listed Team Group's website yet. Can't find any reviews or full specs for it but the 2 tb version is reviewed here: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/team-group-g50-2-tb/19.ht…

    • $129 at Centre Com

    • yeah couldnt find a review of the 4TB but found the same on the 2TB model on Tech Powerup who gave it a good recommendation

  • Also thanks for fixing up the deal! Sorry first time posting !

YMTC 128L Xtacking 2.0 is the type of NAND I generally avoid getting (data retention concern). While it is understandable 128L NAND being used with the controller (Innogrit IG5220), Xtacking 2.0 NAND doesn't have a good reputation.

YMTC did stockpile a lot of them so not a surprise on the discount.

    • +3

The upside is the price. Of course you can get better but you're gonna pay more

    • Any better ones you recommend in similar price range?

The brand of choice for the usual suspects PC builders

  • Thank you!

  • Will this be a good option to add this 2 TB SSD to the Dell laptop (Dell5520i52-r) which I bought with https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/925544 ?? TIA

review lists high idle power as a con so it would likely eat your battery life up a bit.
It's about 1.4w more than most of the other drives listed here.
A quick google indicates that laptop battery is about 63Wh which means the ssd alone will eat a little over 2% of the battery charge every hour or 20% in 10hrs that you wouldn't lose with a more efficient ssd.
Efficiency is more normal when not in idle so ymmv depending on how you're using it. It might be okay as an OS drive, but it would be terrible as a secondary drive.

Always back up your important data.

Would the 2tb be ok for a ps5?

    • +3

It's below Sony's recommended specs, but PS5 doesn't enforce it must pass that speed. PS5 only checks the SSD is a PCIe gen 4 x4 NVMe SSD.
      It'll work.

      • +2

As a PS5 owner who shelled out for a top tier drive.. I really question whether any games actually use or need the speed. Other than ratchet and clank.. I honestly feel it was a SSD selling exercise.

        • I asked myself this question a while back when I bought the PS5 after Covid. Digital Foundry did a comparison with Western Digital Black models and found while the SN770 is just below the 5500Mb/s recommendation (at 5200Mb/s) it pretty much ran around the relatively similar time frames as the SN850X model (7300Mb/s).

          • @giordan0: I'm confused about upgrading the hdd on my ps5. When I replace the existing m.2 with a bigger one, I'll lose all the game and save data?

Mine is jailbroken so ii need more storage

    I don't need it I don't need it I don't need it

    • Same. Don't need it. But the price looks very tempting. However, I'll resist in the hope that prices will drop further.

      • 2tb at $129 is tempting as hell.

38% "life" left on my nvme.. still don't need it I reckon

        • Does that mean it's currently on 38% health?

          • +1

@chinaman: It just means it's used up 62% of its rated writes in tb. It can last longer than the rated writes

      • I was comparing a recent deal for the Lexar NM790 to one from 2023.

Makes me kick myself for not just buying one back then.

        • I get what you're saying. But I still have around 2-3 TB of free space. So I am trying not to impulse buy.

  • finally bite on an ssd. 2TB is within my price budget. seems like a better alternative compared to the poorly review NV3

Would the 2TB be ok for bringing movies along on an upcoming overseas trip if I put it in an enclosure? I don't know how much internet we'll have, so I want to have backed up versions of movies just in case - I was originally looking at a 500gb but for double the price I may as well get 4x the storage if it's good?

    • +1

      Yeah definitely

  • Literally bought this on Wednesday. Does anybody know if centrecom do partial refunds in these cases?

    • Same as me, so would be keen to know.

    • +3

nah. used to work there definitely not lmao, no change of mind refunds either, they're strict af now

  • On the centrecom webpage for the 2tb, it says in red banner as to save more with coupon. I clock on it and nothing. Anyone know what this is?

    • supposed to save extra $4 with coupon but they have taken the coupon off the page for the 4tb

  • Massive noob; can I use this as an external SSD to back up files?

    • +1

Yes, but you will need an SSD enclosure so you can actually plug it in via USB to your laptop, desktop, phone, etc.

      • Ah,thank you.

    • +2

Yes but honestly not worth it. You'll be only getting a fraction of the speed unless you have thunderbolt 4 port, which itself is very expensive. The cable, the enclosure, the port on the PC/laptop must all be compatible to get anywhere near the max speeds.

Even getting full 10gbps (1/4 of these max speed) speeds are difficult, you'd need everything (both ports + cable) on USB 3.1 gen 2..

For backup, just get a cheapo HDD?

      • Ah,thank you. I have an older laptop. It's an ASUS TUF FX505DD,so definitely won't have latest USB slots. I've been looking at an external HD every day,but they're so expensive and I really don't know how much I need. I've been given access to old episodes of DOOL from somebody over on Facebook, and at the end of the year he's going to remove them. Basically these are rare because they're not available legally and if you are wanting to purchase each year,it will cost around $60 USD and let's just say if you're wanting it from the beginning to now,it will cost $900 USD. I don't plan on watching it from the beginning, but it would be cool to store them. Also,my laptop is only 256GB,lol,so I really can't see how much big each year of episodes would be in size.

Get an enclosure from AliExpress Bundled Deals for around $6 (make sure you pick NVMe version as a lot of the heavily discounted ones default to SATA, which won't work with this). The annoying thing with the AliExpress dirt cheap ones are they seem to come with USB-C to USB-A cables. If you need a USB-C to USB-C cable, get one of the USB4 ones for around $4 (because some of the USB-C gen 2 cables on AliExpress are lousy quality, the USB4 ones should at least do fine at USB 3.2 gen 2 mode).

For $11-$15, it doesn't hurt to get one. That said, for USB 3.2 gen 2 enclosures, I tend to use PCIe gen 3 x4 SSDs (cheaper) and I even use QLC SSDs if the source of the backup are HDDs.

      • Ah,thank you. I'm checking now.

  • would it be a single sided SSD? thanks in advance.

  • I just got 3 x 2TB and used GIMMEMORE code at checkout for $125 each. $375 excl $4.50 paypal charge.

    • I purchased yesterday and forgot the GIMMEMORE code. I'll hand over my ozb badge :(

  • +1

For those wonder if the 4TB model is single or dual sided. I can confirm the 4TB is single sided (for those putting it into a laptop or worried about clearance)
