Is this a good boot drive for Windows 11? Keen to increase the capacity of my laptop but it only has 1 SSD slot.

    • Yes it is a very good drive.

    • Yes, One of the fastest SSD I own and gladly purchase another!

  • The price is too good.. Got one…Thank you so much.

  • +4

    HOLD

    • +5

      Yeah under $200

    • +2

SSD prices were expected to go down 15% Q3 back up Q4
this maybe one of the last chances
i don't expect we'll see these sub $200 for at least another year

      hope im wrong 🙃

I've had one of these for a couple of months now, great drives, no issues with heat (as long as you have a heatsink on your motherboard) or performance, using as a secondary drive. I hope they make an 8TB version. :)

    • You reckon it would work without a heatsink in a laptop ?

      • +1

This review seems to indicate that it'd get pretty toasty without a heatsink and may throttle on sustained writes. https://www.techpowerup.com/review/lexar-nm790-4-tb/8.html

I haven't tried it without a heatsink personally. It'll depend on the how long you do sustained writes for? I reckon it'd probably be fine as it'll throttle before it'll burn itself out.

Edit - mine's sitting under the mobo heatsink, currently idle at 52deg. I rarely see much over 60deg on it under write load.

        • +1

Theres a $10 lexar heatsink i just bought with this drive. Still cheaper than last month

  • hi does this work for ps5

    • +2

      yes it does.

    • Add heatsink

  • It is getting cheaper and cheaper.

  • +7

Not sure if anyone cares, but if you use Linux, your system needs to be suspended then resumed for this to work (atleast as of 6.5.7, current kernel). This is with the 4TB model, but i believe also affects the other sizes as they are all the same.

There is a patch in the works that fixes the issue for the controller, can't find it now but just thought I would note it.

    Fantastic device otherwise :).

    • +1

I tried linux mint (but the linux OS was installed on a different NVMe SSD), it detected NM790 1TB on another NVMe slot fine.

However, there are a lot of reports on people having this issue. Someone indicated the NVMe PCIe driver needs to sleep for 1 second, but re-compiling linux kernel is not fun. Waiting 1 second also seems like a bit of a hack. Someone reported using 6.1 LTS doesn't have this issue, but most people prefer to use later / latest kernel version.

  • Any good for PS5 or nah?

    • Get the one with heatsink on. It's more than enough speed for ps5

  • +4

I DONT NEED ONE I DONT NEED ONE I DONT NEED ONE
    MUST STAY STRONG!!! (breathing intensifies)

I thought about pulling the trigger too but then I look at my current storage and no where close to filling up, I think I made the right choice of not buying until I need it

      • +2

Yep same over the year or so have accumulated about 10TB in gen4 SSDs lol which I know for a fact will keep me going for a few years. Maybe <$200 and I'll consider it ahahah

    • Black Friday and Xmas is coming.

      • As if they actually have any decent deals. How many times same item wad cheaper the week after Black Friday lol.

    • I don't, need one

  • Does anyone know if the coupon will work with this Orico enclosure on MWave ?

    I'm not a member, so I can't check.

  • This or wait for a DRAM enabled drive as my new boot?

  • Link enclosre for ps5 bls

    Hello everyone,

I'd like to provide an update on current Mwave promotion. First and foremost, it's important to clarify that we didn't initiate this promotion, but it's indeed a fantastic opportunity.
Frankly, I was pleasantly surprised by this deal as I had no prior knowledge of it.

In recent times, we've witnessed a significant uptick in prices, with SSDs seeing an approximate 27% increase and DRAM prices rising by over 35%. These adjustments are occurring on a weekly basis. This price surge isn't exclusive to Lexar; it's an industry-wide trend. You can explore the reasons for this online, but I want to be candid - it's unlikely you'll find better deals out there right now.

Regarding Black Friday deals, I'm actively collaborating with various resellers to secure enticing offers. Unfortunately, my initial plan of bundling games with our products didn't pan out due to the poor performance of the game I had in mind.

The impact of discounts may be somewhat diminished by the recent price hikes. Even after applying discounts, our products may still be pricier than historical lows, which might not sit well with customers who have seen our previous deals.

In terms of timing, we're not planning to wait until the end of November. We aim to kick off the promotion in the first or second week of November at the latest. Our primary focus will be on the NM790 4TB model and select 2TB variants. Unfortunately, 1TB drives are already in short supply, and we don't have specific ETAs for restocking. To be honest, when I look at the deal from Mwave, I'm not confident that we can offer something better.

Some have expressed interest in 8TB drives and are patiently waiting for new products. Here's a brief update on our SSD plans:

The NM790 series has been performing exceptionally well with positive reviews. However, due to rising production costs, we're planning to introduce a more cost-effective version, the "NQ790" series, which will be more budget-friendly.

We've noticed a sudden surge in demand for 2230 drives, particularly due to devices like the Steam Deck and other handheld Steam consoles. We will soon introduce high-end 2230 models, starting with 1TB and later expanding to 2TB.

This year, we're committed to competing strongly in the mid-high tier market. Looking ahead to next year, our goal in Australia and New Zealand is to lower prices on top-tier products.

We plan to compete in the 8TB drives segment with DRAM (not from the 790 series) and offer substantial discounts on Gen5 drives. Our aim is to reduce prices in these categories by approximately 40% (though this is a goal and not a guarantee, don't quote me on this and I will try my best is all I can say).

As for the 790 series, both NQ and NM, they will remain positioned as is. Market prices and shortages will likely impact everyone until at least Q1 2024. If the supply situation improves by Q2 2024, we will explore further price reductions.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

    PS.

And also for photographers, we are finally gonna have some market leading cards coming out soon.

    Best Regards

I'm not used to seeing OzBargain used for official press releases but so long as it's relevant I guess I'm not opposed!

      • +2

Dont worry @WatchNerd has a 24/7 surveillance team on the BS type of press releases, ads ect

      • +18

I am a OZbargain user, I also work for Lexar, I have two accounts doing different things, and Ozbargain banned my account because I can only have 1 account, so I kept the work one.
Now I can't talk sxxt about any other brands and troll anyone anymore.
But I can talk about Lexar stuff here.

    • Translated from PR to reality?
This is a very good deal and you should buy it right now.

And this is exactly what im going to do now

      • He did that because he said SSD prices will go up in another NM790 deal before. I was cynical about it and basically responded with if they had the guts to raise the price of NM790, so be it, we'll move on to another SSD.

        • +3

we have already up the RRP in AUS and NZ for 2 weeks in a row in case you haven't noticed.
again, RRP is only a suggestion, whatever resellers wants to do I am not going to interfere, if they want to sell things for 1 dollar, they can do that all they want.

1TB initial deal 65, now RRP os 73
          2TB initially 129, now 145
          4TB already 255, now 275

Price will keep rising. We are positioned as low as we can. I am not going to make our drives dearer than other brands, but price increase is inevitable.

And this one promo, as mentioned, it's a "Mwave promo" not funded by Lexar. I have 0 knowledge on this. I hope people take advantage of this.

And I also mentioned old stock is still available on all brands. no one wants to be the first to increase, that is the case on all levels in supply chain.

          • @Lexar ANZ Chris: Those are Mwave's prices, BPC's price on 2TB is a bit cheaper (the price did increase).
This 4TB, after this discount is still below $255.

You want to keep raising prices, go ahead. So, Mwave can do this because they had some old stock and the profit margin on the old stock is higher for Mwave. $/GB, these NM790 SSDs are not record holders so basically they depend on people not quite able to resist a combination PCIe gen 4 x4 hype on sequential read/write low queue depth and somewhat enticing prices.

            • +2

@netsurfer: What you said from a user level, I completely, I am not a suited corperate guy who never build my own PC before.
I am a computer guy my entire life, i have run different brands my entire career. So I feel you, and I am trying to do what's best.
In fact I dare to talk to people on Ozbargain already showing I am quite commited to bring additional values for PC builders in ANZ market.
however, industry wide price increases is not a choice made by me, exchange rate is not controllable either.

price hike is not going to affect Lexar only, just look at whatever other brands you like, and give it a bit time. You will see it's not like I want to increase Lexar prices because I feel like to.

As for profit margin, sadly, that's not something we are proud of in this industry.
RAM and SSD drives volume and attract customers, but they barely make any money and will be lucky if they don't lose any money.
so that's why I am quite surprised Mwave doing this price.
I don't know how they can afford to do this…but they did anyway, they are selling Lexar, I won't complain.

              • @Lexar ANZ Chris: mwave probably just wants to clear them (which is probably a good thing since the new batch costs more and BPC seems to still offering better prices).

When will the QLC version of Lexar SSDs be available here? Anyway, Lexar ANZ no longer has old NM790 stock according to you, some SSD makers still have a few in Australia by the look of it. Black Friday is coming up.

        • Why would you even post this lol?
Just don't buy it and vote with your wallet no need to officially declare it on Ozbargain lol

The pricing on this was amazing and Lexar ANZ Chris has been putting out great deals.

          • -1

@demki: Because this is the type of deals OZBers should be considering if Lexar ANZ is in price rising mode. Heavy promotion on old stock or clearance deals or Amazon pricing error, but honoured.

The rep isn't exactly that happy about this (a retailer selling at cost or close to cost price). The price on this isn't amazing (it's pretty good at the moment), it is that most people cannot resist seeing those high sequential read/write figures. We just want overkill figures (even though the SSD's consistency performance isn't top notch nor is $/GB setting any new record). Don't get me wrong, I own an NM790 SSD (1TB - $65). I just wanted to test it. I did buy Samsung 990 Pro 1TB for $56 from Amazon (about a week later from memory). Anyway, I know the strengths and weaknesses of NM790.

Well, it doesn't hurt to push the rep for please explain. How was this deal possible? Clearly there was a bit of margin from the old stock (to be fair, we cannot expect retailers to sell at a loss). It's very easy to sugarcoat "being a computer guy". Any real computer guy would know these things don't cost that much. You could approximate how much buffer there is (so if another retailer were to do another sale on NM790 on the new stock, what would that be approximately, it does not hurt to know that).

I could have bought one if I wanted to, but happy to let some other OZBer to have it.

          • @demki: You cannot rely on getting your information from a sales rep. He did inform you to check. Do check it yourself and you will realise what's actually going on.

What the sales rep is doing is exactly as expected, the article I read doubt that will actually work.

Bottom line, the rep previously said the price will go up, and did raise the price. But, this happened. My prediction is that SSD makers will still need to drop price to entice people to buy. Also, I cannot help but think the recent price rise of NM790 is strategic because NQ790 is coming and there needs to be a sufficient price gap to entice people to buy NQ790.

NQ790 now pretty much needs to be priced lower than $227 (I think it should anyway).

    • Hi Chris, Can we pay a bit more and get this deal for the heatsink version? Don't really want to mess around with a third party heatsink.

      • +3

        Hi Boomersgold.

This one is a Mwave deal, I have 0 knowledge of this happenning.
But I am glad it happened, if they want to sell it for 1 dollar and move 1million units, I am happy to sell mwave 1 million drives :D

I will do some deals on 4TB heatsink, but not like this…

        • Hello, will the 4TB work ok in a Dell laptop? No overheating or any other issues?
          Thanks.

      • +1

When you buying other items from AliExpress, consider getting something like the below and try to purchase up to $15 in total to get the free shipping.

        https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005366468140.html

Combine with Shopback/CashRewards. That heatsink was selling for $4.90 recently. Obviously, there is 10% GST to be added. Unless you have multiple 4TB SSDs, it is unlikely you will be able to get these to thermal throttle. If you have actual usages for that to happen, generally the type of work you are doing should generate enough money to buy flagship PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs.

    • Thanks Chris, so will we see better price than this next month?
      Thanks

      • +1

no, this is even cheaper than last quarter if I recall correctly.
        I didn't fund this promo

  • Timing could not be any more perfect. Got it for $269 just yesterday… :facepalm

    • Its only about $30 after shipping

      • +1

Yeah i know.. this was the reason I didn't buy from mwave (+ shipping cost). I got it from bpc instead with Mr beast chocolate promotion >.< Atleast I can say I got that silly little choco for $30 :D

  • Says coupon code not valid, expired?

  • +2

Had it cart ready to buy and then said "This coupon code is not valid."

    • +1

Likely expired. At that price, these would to be old stock (based on information from Lexar rep) and mwave didn't sell them previously due to BPC offering better price and/or free shipping.

      • +1

I don't know about this promo, but it's probably a 30 or 50 units limited run or something.
        (don't quote me)

Alternatively, some reseller bought out all their stock.
(quite frankly, that's very likely with that price)

        • better have 1 per account rule

          • @tangwf: This is about retailers. Trying to figure out how this was achieved (assuming the retailer is selling at cost or close to cost price).

  • Code no longer working

  • Darn, always rapidly here then gone with this deal.

Got one but at that price would love to grab another (maybe a couple) but ahh well.

  • Yes but hold for sub $200 for storage :)

    • Unless its happening next 6 months or so, there is no point

      • +1

QLC SSDs came close a few time ($209), but most of us don't want QLC SSDs.
        Weak AUD is a problem.

  • Well shoot I missed it again

  • You guys reckon this is still worth it at the current $280? No, right?
