Nokia Lumia 620 Windows Phone 8 - $280 (RRP $329) Unlocked + Bonus Portable Charger @ Allphones

900

Allphones will be selling the Nokia Lumia 620 for $280 "outright" including a bonus Nokia portable charger. Word on the street is that stock will be arriving Monday/Tuesday in at least the black option. Image of Allphones sales flyer taken from WPDownUnder.

The Lumia 620 has access to all of the Nokia exclusive applications and as with all WP8 handsets includes the excellent Nokia Drive+ (free NAVTEQ, voice-guided offline mapping) amongst other exclusives. The free portable charger looks pretty neat too: http://press.nokia.com/products/559/nokia-universal-portable…

Some quick points about the 620:
* Interchangeable covers
* Expandable memory (up to 64GB microSDXC)
* Front-facing-camera, NFC
* Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core @ 1GHz
* Quad-band 3G: 850/900/1900/2100 (Next-G compatible)

How much of a deal is this? It's the cheapest for the 620 and Australian stock, you can pick it up from a physical store and you get the free portable charger. It's also the cheapest unlocked WP8 handset around and you don't miss out on anything OS wise compared to the flagship phones.

Update: I've done a little looking into the charger and it's quite a neat device. Looks like it was originally launched at MWC last year so could be older stock they're looking to clear (colours match original Lumia 800 line-up). There's a pretty thorough review of it here: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/reviews/item/14790_Nokia_DC-1… and it sells for around $40 USD from Amazon. It can do in-line charging, so you connect your wall charger to the portable charger and that to the phone. That will charge the phone first, then the portable charger.

Update 04/02: Magmaros on Whirlpool says "About half of the store's should have stock at the moment."

Update 05/02: Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has come down under to launch this handset, the RRP should be $329 for the handset alone. The bonus charger is worth about $40 too.

I am not interested in buying this phone - but a pos for you for all the research/info you included.

  • Good deal!

  • Thanks for all the info buddy, was looking for this phone :)

  • Is this genuine Aus channel stock with Aus warranty? They may be doing direct imports….?

Had one for a few weeks now and its the best phone I have ever had. I didn't need a higher res OLED screen or anything fancier display wise.

Total iPhone killer at 1/3 the price, and not made by the most arrogant and overpriced gadget company on earth.

Also, for those who incorrectly thought that Nokia was among the dead, read http://www.techspot.com/news/51520-nokia-receives-135-billio…

    • +2

I can't confirm it's Aus channel stock but as best as I know, Allphones don't have a history of doing parallel/grey imports. I also think Nokia (or local distie) is doing a promotion with them which is why you're getting the Nokia portable charger free. The price is actually about par when you look at it globally but I've posted it as a deal because it's the cheapest in AU at the moment even when you compare it with grey importers and you're getting the charger.

        • Once Nokia shifts to Android OS, this won't be the case. A fire sale like HP Touch PAD? I think NOT.

        • +4

This is a budget model (although still keeps decent specs), so is priced accordingly. I'd be worried if it was more than this price.

        • -2

I'd be worried if it was more than this price.

How does this make it a good deal then? Doesn't your comment suggest the price is at best average?

        • -1

interpretation - mathew42 has no idea how stupid the cr4p he is spouting reads to others.

Nokia actually held back releasing the 620 to allow more time to clear stock of the previous model(s).

They also released the higher model Lumia's first to get sales to early adopters.

At least research your opinions before parroting off some nonsense.

        • -2

and I get a neg. for?!

        • +1

The price is exactly where it should be considering the hardware & software, but.. the efficiency and features of this phone make it easy for companies to sell for a higher price. That's just business.

This also rings true for S3, Note 2, iPhone 5 etc.. None of these phones should be as expensive as their RRP but businesses will do their best to get a healthy profit.

        • +1

Like you said its a business. it's not a charity, they are there to make money.

  • +10

Have we forgiven Allphones when it dishonoured vouchers anyway it could, and increased the prices to offset the voucher value?

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/59593

    • +1

No on my account. I'll have to buy this in disguise.

    • +1

      Let's not forget that!

    • +1

No! Certainly we have not forgiven. Thanks for reminding. I remember checking back so many times, just to be disappointed every time that my voucher was still practically useless. Almost makes me want to vote negative for this deal too.

  • +4

Have had one for a couple of weeks - paid $300 delivered with free sd card. Very nice phone at very good price.

    • +4

Agreed. Got an import for the wife a few weeks back, can confirm it's a great little handset. $280 is a great price for a fully featured smart phone with Oz warranty.

Also all Nokia phones have exclusive Nokia apps such as turn by turn navigation, etc.

    • +1

Imported not covered by AUS warranty by Nokia

    • Plus $30 FedEx shipping and no bonus charger. As brent3000 said you lose your local warranty too, plus who knows how reliable "PortaGagdets" are.

    • +4
      • $5 to choose your colour instead of a random one?!! Lol at this guys sales technique.
      • -4

Sorry bad example. This deal is not really a bargain when you can find other locals selling at that price. If it was 250 < I would plus this.

  • According to that link on Whirlpool, Allphones is currently only stocking Black model at release.

Does anyone know if Mobileciti (http://www.mobileciti.com.au/) sells genuine Australian Stock (they claim they do)? Even though I knew Allphones would be selling it $10 cheaper than these guys, I ordered from them any way as I wanted a blue one which Allphones won't stock at release. Thanks.

    • +4

MobileCiti is AUS genuine, MobiCity is the guys who import the phones.

As it says on the site, A Tick stock

      • OK Thanks so much. Feel much better now :D

  • Just picked up a N4 myself but my dads really keen on this phone, he'll probably stop by Allphones on Monday now.

    • +1

Maybe take up the offer by Magmaros on Whirlpool ( http://whrl.pl/RdtjIc ) to check your local store for stock. He's suggested stock is turning up Mon/Tue.

      • Cheers for that tip.

  • -3

i had nokia for years and years but after the last one they couldnt pay me to take a nokia again

    • Yeah. Went Nokia for years then got the x6. 14 months it lasted. wasn't very happy. Enjoying HTC and android now.

  • +14

Windows Phones are great as even their budget models have really good performance. I love Android but a lot has to be said about the budget models.

    • +13

      100% agree.

You can get a Lumia 620 AND a 7" Android tablet (if you want the best of both worlds) AND 5-star dinner with a movie for 2 for the price of an iPhoney 5.

Better that than pay for an Apple exec to have a 5-star anything (they already have 5-star prices).

      • And with that you get a better quality phone than the iPhone, and probably a better tablet than the iPad, and a better movie than you would get on iTunes. So really, there is no reason to use anything Apple.

  • +1

I'd rather go for the Xperia Sola. Similar specs and $180 at Voda.

  • It's advertised in the Allphones buyer's guide for February on the back page. Can anyone get a scanned copy?

  • I love nokia and like windows phone but I hate that Nokia has removed speed and safety camera alerts on nokia drive for Australia. My symbian 5800 has that feature why not bring it to wp?

    • +1

Trapster is out on Windows Phone, not a total replacement but it may help. Oddly enough Trapster was acquired by NAVTEQ who were acquired by Nokia.

    • The Nokia Maps on N8 also has the camera alert. Why don't they bring it to WP?!

      • What about just not speeding? Thus the feature would be irrelevant. Anyway, it already has speed alerts when you go over the speed limit.

        • +2

They often place speed traps in places where the speed limit changes or at the bottom of a hill.

Plus the speed limits in Australia are extremely low and the tolerance for speeding is extremely tight compared to nearly any other country in the world.

        • +1

Sad fact is most Australian drivers go less than 10 above the speed limit and if you go less than that you are more of a road hazard than by actually just following the traffic flow.

        • What? So if you go more than 10 above the speed limit, you are less of a road hazard than by just following the traffic flow?

And here I thought following the speed limit was safer than speeding…

        • +1

Less than 10 above the limit.

  • Allphones in Riverton forum WA sux FYI. They agreed the deal over the phone but when i got there they refuse to honour it.

    • But this deal doesn't start for another two days…

      • From my previous experience.

  • I am very tempted by this deal.

  • I want the 920 (wish that was $280), but a good deal none the less.

    • +1

920 is a fairly large and heavier phone (180g).

620 is the same size as an iphone 3g though a bit thinner.

I also like the more rounded edges on the 620. The price saving is a bonus as the major diffs are only internal memory, screen size and quality, battery size and wireless charging (I think). As far as I understand the software is the same, and as others mentioned the Nokia Drive and other software are great, and same throughout the models.

The other thing I feel about phone price, whether on plan or outright, is that if a $300 phone fails/lost/stolen/out of warranty compared to an $800 phone the pain isn't so bad.

With the Lumia 620 the $280 bang-for-the-buck is huge, particularly if you already use Microsoft online services or Skype (as skype takes over MSMessenger on March 15th). The MS Phone 8 Skype app is still being worked on however.

      • Software is the same, but I want the higher quality camera, screen, and really don't mind the size. Price is the only reason I didn't buy it immediately when it came out.

      • -1

"major diffs are only internal memory, screen size and quality, battery size and wireless charging"

Those are some pretty big 'only's. Any one of those features is potentially deal-breaking for more discerning shoppers.

"if a $300 phone fails/lost/stolen/out of warranty compared to an $800 phone the pain isn't so bad."

What a bizarre notion. You can theoretically apply this mentality to any purchase. Why bother with nice shoes when you can lose them at the gym or get them caked in mud? No-brand workboots it is! Your inflated "$500" saving counts on your losing of the phone to justify itself.

Also, your comment history suggests a pattern of childish rejection of anything non-Microsoft and pre-emptive accusing of others being Apple fanboys. Are you an MVP or just trolling?

        • +1

He has a valid point, were comparing a $280 product with a $720 product, and you're saying that the cheaper one is better because its smaller, and "only" internal memory…

Also, if I were to lose my $300 phone the main thing I'd worry about is the stuff on the phone (personal information, phone numbers, linked skydrive, linked email, linked company email…). I don't worry as much about loosing it due to its price, if I lost my wallet (smaller than the phone), I'd lose my bank card, credit card, cash, which is way more than $720… Or if I lost the keys to my car… Say I lost my DSLR camera… Buying a cheap product because you fear losing it is a bit short-sighted.

Although I understand you prefer the 620 due to price, and don't really care about the hardware, so thats fine, but its certainly not a better phone than the 920.

      • Heard of insurance?

  • -4
    • $273 at valuebasket but who cares?the deal is mostly about the charger, which is a great bonus

Waiting on confirmation from Nokia AU on carrier release details. Expect DSE will also get the unlocked/outright version for sale…

  • Google are removing windows phones ability to sync calander and address book functions, rendering this mobile useless (you can work around it online but its a hassle), also if the crappy 610 was anything to go by the call quality is awefull… I wouldnt buy one again. I would buy almost any andriod mobile and use the win7 or the even better win8 skin, its awesome!!!

    • If Google removes calendar and address from Windows phones, then you can use Live calendar and address book. I know the Lice calendar is pretty poor, but at least Microsoft has so far respected users privacy more than Google (which scans everything for advertising purposes). You can also sync Live calendar with Google calendar.

Also, don't form your opinions of the 620 on the 610, 610 was the old model, and chances are any problems have been fixed, and everything else improved for the new 620.

    • +1

Google are removing windows phones ability to sync calander and address book functions

Only for new customers. If you sync before Jun 30 your account won't have this issue. Microsoft have also promised CardDAV support - hopefully it arrives before then.

Also, Outlook.com is seriously worth looking into. I've sucked all my Gmail into it and I am slowly making the transition away from Google.

      • Well, I probably won't get a Windows phone in time to sync before June 30 (maybe I will, depends on good deals), but now I need to look up why Google is doing this. Sounds quite selfish. Google maps is back on iDevices, so maybe they'll decide to stay on WP as well? Hopefully anyway, even if I wouldn't use it (privacy, et al.), I still want max options.

Amd Outlook is certainly superior in everything except calendar, the calendar hasn't been updates since hotmail days, and Google Calendar is much better. You can't set up colours, custom schedules etc. Currently I use Google for calendar, and Outlook for everything else. Considering using DropBox for storage (I missed out on grandfathering SkyDrive), but 7GB should be enough at least for now (hopefully Microsoft will increase the limit, as the price of storage decreases).

Allphones in Clarkson, WA honored no worries.. got one last night for $280.00 only had 2 in stock tho.

  • I got one on Friday from the Charlestown Square (NSW) store but the loudspeaker was not working.

I went back in on Sunday and asked for a refund given it's basically DOA, but the 'Customer Service' representative, claiming to be be the store manager, started getting aggressive when I did and didn't want to know anything about it. He argued that it's not possible for a device to be faulty 'out of the box'. Finally he said that it would have to go back to be checked by their technicians before anything could be done. Now I'm left without a phone for 7 - 10 days while they make up their mind. I never had rigmarole like this with DSE or anyone else. Anyone else had problems with Allphones?

    • That's pretty rough; Allphones don't have the best track record for service.. then again neither do any of the big players.

    • +1

      Report them to the ACCC.

  • I have the DC-16 in-line charger, it's really handy. Sleek looking package too.
